Description
Erfindungsgemäß kann eine Suspension hergestellt werden, die etwa 0,01 bis 2 Gewichtsteile des polymeren Carboxypolymethylens, 100 bis 500 Gewichtsteile des Schleifpulvers, 897 bis 488 Gewichtsteile der Flüssigkeit und 2,5 bis 10 Gewichtstei-Ie eines Neutralisierungsmittels enthältcan be essentially of water and / or a glycol existing liquid, containing up to 50 weight percent, for example 10 to 50 weight percent, preferably 20 to 50 weight percent of the abrasive powder, prepared according to the invention manufactured stage process. In accordance with the present invention, a suspension can be made containing about 0.01 to 2 parts by weight of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene, 100 to 500 parts by weight of the abrasive powder, 897 to 488 parts by weight of the liquid, and 2.5 to 10 parts by weight of a neutralizing agent
A polymeric carboxypolymethylene can be used to produce the stable suspension described above of high molecular weight as described in US Pat. No. 3,817,727. One mixes it ι s with the liquid to a first or absorbent dispersion and neutralized to a pH of about 9.0 to 9.5. The liquid can be water, an anhydrous glycol or a mixture of a glycol with Water can be used as described in the referenced U.S. Patent. The salary of the first Dispersion of polymeric carboxypolymethylene is only part of the carbpxypolymethyl content of the suspension to be produced, and is at least 0.02 wt .-%, but not above that concentration, in which the added abrasive flocculates. The upper limit for the concentration of polymer Carboxypolymethylene in the first dispersion which avoids flocculation of the abrasive depends on the size of the abrasive powder. Lower concentrations will be at smaller ones Particle diameters used. For example, if the particles of the powder have a diameter of 5 to 75 Microns, the polymeric carboxypolymethylene can be present in amounts up to about 0.4 weight percent be; for particle diameters of the abrasive powder from 1 to 5 microns, the upper limit is about 0.35 % By weight, for particle diameters of 0.3 to 1 micron, the upper limit is about 0.25% by weight; at For particle diameters of 0.05 microns to 0.3 microns, the upper limit is about 0.15 weight percent. A Compliance with these upper limits for the concentration of polymeric carboxypolymethylene in the first dispersion is necessary in order to avoid flocculation of the grinding powder applied afterwards, whereby the The tendency to flocculate increases with decreasing particle diameters of the powder.
Die Zugabe der angegebenen Mengen des Schleifpulvers,To neutralize the first dispersion of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene to pH from about 9.0 to 9.5 compounds described in the referenced U.S. Patent can be used. A dispersion of the abrasive powder in the liquid is then made to have a pH of about 8.0 to 9.0. Such an amount of this dispersion is added to the first dispersion that the ss Mixture contains at least about 0.5% by weight of the abrasive powder. When using first dispersions with a relatively high content of polymeric carboxypolymethylene, it is recommended to use this first dispersion tentatively very small amounts of the abrasive powder, e.g. B. 0.01 wt .-%, add if if flocculation does not occur, the remaining amount of abrasive powder can be added. Find a If flocculation takes place, so will the concentration of polymeric carboxypolymethylene in the first dispersion reduced to such an extent that no flocculation takes place when the small test amounts are added. the Addition of the specified amounts of abrasive powder,
H. 0.5% by weight, causes the first dispersion in brought to a state in which further polymeric carboxypolymethylene together with Abrasive powder can be added in amounts up to 50% by weight.
A second dispersion of polymeric carboxypolymethylene in the liquid is then made and neutralized to a pH of 9.0 to 9.5. This second dispersion contains the polymeric carboxypolymethylene about 10 to 50 times the concentration compared to the first dispersion. This second Dispersion and a dispersion of the abrasive powder in the liquid are added to the first dispersion, creating a permanent suspension. This latter can be up to 50% by weight of the abrasive powder contain. The second dispersion of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene is added in such amounts that the final suspension contains about 0.001 to 0.2% by weight of polymeric carboxypolymethylene. the finished dispersion can contain up to 50% by weight of the abrasive, e.g. B. 10 to 50%, preferably 20 to 50% included.
In a preferred embodiment of the method, the first dispersion contains the polymer Carboxypolymethylene about 20 to 60% by weight of the total liquid, and the second dispersion of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene contains about 2 to 10 % By weight of the total liquid The required remainder of the liquid is used together with the dispersion of the abrasive added.
The use of special neutralized dispersions of the polymeric Carbox> polymethylene with different and controlled concentrations, and the use of a special dispersion of the abrasive powder makes it possible, according to the invention, to produce a stable suspension with up to 50% by weight of abrasives in Water and / or a glycol. This is done by adding a dispersion of the abrasive powder, e.g. B. AI2O3, to the neutralized, relatively dilute first dispersion of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene achieved. This brings this dispersion into a certain state, possibly through surface reactions between the abrasive and the polymeric carboxymethylene, in which a concentrated, neutralized second dispersion of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene added in such amounts can be achieved that a concentration of polymeric carboxypolymethylene is achieved which the abrasive keeps medium in constant suspension in amounts of up to 50% by weight. In process step (b) can the entire amount of the abrasive can also be added. But it is better to start with around 10 add up to 60% by weight of the abrasive, followed by 30 to 60% of the second dispersion of the polymeric Carboxypolymethylene can be added. The rest of the abrasive dispersion is then added and finally the remainder of the second dispersion of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene.

Any grinding and polishing agents can be suspended by the method according to the invention. Typical powders are aluminum oxides with average diameters of the individual particles of 0.05 to 1.0 Micron. Other powders can include silicon carbide, sea sand and others in US Pat. In the process of the present invention, dispersions can be prepared by mixing a high molecular weight polymeric carboxy · polymethylene with ethylene glycol. The polymeric carboxypolymethylene is a dry, flaky powder in acidic form which must be neutralized to develop the best properties. After the polymeric carboxypolymethylene has been mixed with the liquid, an aqueous solution of a neutralizing agent is therefore added. Neutralizing agents for polymeric carboxypolymethylene are described in US Pat. No. 3,817,727. They include organic bases such as diisopropanolamine or inorganic bases such as sodium hydroxide. Further bases which neutralize the polymeric carboxypolymethylene in water or in mixtures of water and ethylene glycol are ammonium hydroxide, triethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethylamine and tertiary amines with an alkyl group R and hydroxyethyl groups on the nitrogen (H OCHj [CHj-NR-CH 2 CH 2 OH ). Diisopropanolamine is the most effective neutralizing agent in the present system and is therefore preferred. An advantage of the suspensions when using this organic base is that no inorganic ions, such as sodium ions, are present in significant amounts. Ions have a harmful effect on polished supports made of semiconducting materials.
Glycols to be used according to the invention are described in US Pat. No. 3,817,727. Belong to them Ethylene glycols and propylene glycols.
The suspensions prepared according to the invention can be used to a large extent everywhere there where the powders they contain are useful, they can be used in all polishing processes can be used in which alumina powder is used. They have the new advantage that they The powders are easier to handle than the powders. Since they are chemically neutral, welds will not work corrodes, as with other abrasives.
