Abstract

Stable suspension of a polishing powder in water and/or glycol is prepd. by (a) producing a first dispersion of at least 0.02 wt. % of a polymeric carboxypolymethylene ('Carbopol' RTM) in a liquid having pH = 9.0-9.5 with the proviso that the liquid amounts to 20-60 wt. % of the total: liquid to be used in the suspension, and the polymeric cpd. is present in an amt. which does not cause flocculation of the polishing powder suspension prepd. in the next step. (b) adding to the above dispersion a suspension of the polishing powder (pref. Al2O3) in a liquid having pH = 8.0-9.0 in such an amt. that the mixt contains at least 0.5 wt. % of the polishing powder, and (c) adding a second dispersion of the polymeric carboxypolymethylene in a liquid having pH = 9.0-9.5, with a 10- to 50-fold concn. of the polymeric cpd. compared with (a) a polishing powder suspension in such amts. that a suspension is formed contg. 10-50 wt. % of the polishing powder and 0.001-0.2 wt. % of the polymer carboxylpolymethylene cpd. Stable suspensions contg. up to 50% of a polishing powder are produced (stability is ensured by first preparing and mixing together a low-concn. dispersion of the stabilising agent an d a low-concn. suspension of the polishing powder and only then raising the concentrations to the final level).
