Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
It is known that iridium is added to platinum for various purposes in order to give it greater hardness. The percentage of such alloys an.Iridium varies depending on the intended degree of hardness and goes up to 30 percent. It has now been found that, to a far greater extent than iridium, osmium has the property of giving platinum greater hardness; Furthermore, it was found through experiments that osmium platinum alloys have considerably greater elasticity than iridium platinum alloys with the same hardness, and that in the effect ι part osmium is equivalent to about 2Y 2 parts iridium, as far as the hardness of the alloys is taken into account, while the predominance in terms of elasticity of osmium is even greater.
The importance of this invention is evident from the fact that the demand for hard and elastic platinum alloys is increasing every day, so that it is to be feared that in the foreseeable future there will not be enough iridium to meet the demand. The use of osmium, on the other hand, has been extremely limited up to now. The possibility of using 1 part osmium instead of 2 1 Z 2 parts of iridium therefore ensures that the industries in question also have the option of obtaining the alloys that are indispensable for them.
It is known from the literature that among the metals that occur in nature Contains platinum as platinum alloys, also contains osmium, from which the literature has drawn the conclusion that this Platinum alloys extremely easily with those metals.
But it was not known that osmium was particularly special among those metals and is eminently suitable for forming an alloy with the platinum which has the valuable properties mentioned at the beginning. But what that in nature As far as occurring platinum is concerned, the amount of osmium added to it is so small that that its useful effect, as it is made use of in practice according to the invention is complete with other metals (iron, copper) added to natural platinum will be annulled. The osmium-containing natural platinum is thus used for the purposes of the present Invention, never can use. For this a content of platinum is on Osmium of 1 percent or more is necessary. More osmium up to 20 percent is harmful nothing. However, it is not allowed to go beyond the latter limit, because otherwise the alloy becomes brittle and technically unusable.
As the osmium is known to be highly oxidizable and also when it is burned If toxic gases are developed, this is due to the production of the alloy described known means to avoid oxidation phenomena.
