unter Drücken von 20 bis 1500 bar in Gegenwart von Rhodiumcarbonyl-Komplexen umsetzt.

in der R1 und R2 gleich oder verschieden sind und jeweils
Wasserstoffatome, Fluor-, Chlor- oder Bromatome, Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen, Cycloalkylreste
mit 5 bis 8 Kohlenstoffatomen im Ring oder Alkoxyreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen bedeuten,
und in der R3, R4, R5 gleich oder verschieden sind und
jeweils für Wasserstoffatome oder Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen stehen, unter der Maßgabe, daß von
den Substituenten R1 bis R5 mindestens ein Substituent nicht für ein Wasserstoffatom steht.
Es wurde gefunden, daß man die Phenylpropanale (I) vorteilhaft erhält, wenn man Verbindungen der Formel

in der R1 und R2 gleich oder verschieden sind und
jeweils Wasserstoffatome, Fluor-, Chlor- oder Bromatome, Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen,
Alkoxyreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen oder Cycloalkylreste mit 5 bis 8 Kohlenstoffatomen
im Ring bezeichnen, und in der R3, R4 und R5 gleich
oder verschieden sind und jeweils für Wasserstoffatome oder Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen
stehen, mit der Maßgabe, daß von den Substituenten R1 bis R5 mindestens ein Substituent nicht für ein
Wasserstoffatom steht.
2. Vei fahren zur Herstellung der Phenyjpropanale
(I), dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man Verbindungen der Formel Il
Gegenstand der Erfindung sind Phenylpropanale der Formel I
in an sich bekannter Weise mit Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff bei Temperaturen von 50 bis 1800C und
unter Drücken von 20 bis 1500 bar in Gegenwart von Rhodiumcarbonyl-Komplexen umsetzt.
1> Das neue Verfahren hat den Vorteil, daß eine Vielzahl
von neuen substituierten Phenylpropanalen zugänglich sind. Ferner hat das neue Verfahren den Vorteil, daß es
in guten Ausbeuten verläuft.
Geeignete Ausgangsverbindungen (II) sind beispielsweise:

5-Phenyl-non-4-en, r> 6-Phenyl-unde-S-cen,
2-(4-Methyl-phenyl)-propen, 3-(4-Methyl-phenyl)-pent-2-en, 5-(4-Methyl-phenyl)-non-4-en,
2-(3-Methyl-phenyl)-propen, so 2-(2-Methyl-phenyl)-propen, 2-(4-Isopropyl-phenyl)-propen,
2-(4-tert.-Butyl-phenyl)-propen, 2-(4-n-Butyl-phenyl)-propen,
2-(4-sec.-Butyl-phenyl)-propen, υ 2-(4-Ethyl-pheny])-propen,

Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff werden im allgemeinen im Volumenverhältnis 0,25 :1 bis 4 :1, insbesondere
im Volumenverhältnis 0,5 :1 bis 2 :1 eingesetzt. Vorteilhaft verwendet man Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff
im Überschuß über (II), z. B. bis zur lOOfachen molaren Menge des CO bzw. des H2.
Die Umsetzung wird bei Temperaturen von 50 bis 180°C durchgeführt; besonders bewährt haben sich
Temperaturen von 60 bis 13O0C. Ferner werden für die Umsetzung Drücke von 20 bis 1500 bar angewandt.
Besonders gute Ergebnisse erhält man unter Drücken von 100 bis 700 bar.
Die Umsetzung wird in Gegenwart von Rhodiumcarbonyl-Komplexen
durchgeführt. Im allgemeinen verwendet man 0,001 ppm bis 0,05 Gew.-% Rhodium, berechnet als Metall und bezogen auf die Menge der
eingesetzten Verbindungen II. Besonders vorteilhaft haben sich Mengen von 0,1 bis 100 ppm Rhodium
erwiesen. Es ist möglich, die Carbonylkomplexe des Rhodiums vor der Reaktion gesondert herzustellen,
oder aber deren Ausgangsstoffe, die Halogenide, Oxide, Chelate oder fettsaure Salze des Rhodiums, getrennt der
Reaktion zuzuführen. Der Katalysator bildet sich dann von selbst unter den Reaktionsbedingungen. Besonders
vorteilhaft verwendet man als Ausgangsstoffe quadratisch-planare Rhodium(I)-Komplexe, die im Reaktionsgemisch homogen löslich sind, wie dimeres Rhodiumcarbonylchlorid,
dimeres Cyclooctadien-l.S-rhodiumchlorid
oder Rhodiumcarbonylacetylacetonat.
Besonders bewährt hat es sich, wenn man zusätzlich tertiäre organische Phosphine als Modifizierungsmittel
zum Katalysator verwendet. Besonders bewährt haben sich tertiäre Phosphine, die als Substituenten Alkylreste
mit 1 bis 16 Kohlenstoffatomen, Cycloalkylreste mit 5 bis 8 Kohlenstoffatomen oder Phenylreste, die gegebenenfalls
Alkylreste mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen als Substituenten tragen können, haben. Besonders bewährt
haben sich Triarylphosphine, die sich vom Benzol ableite^beispielsweiseTriphenylphosphin.Tritolylphosphin
oder gemischte substituierte Phosphine, wie Methyldiphenylphosphin. Die als Modifizierungsmittel
mitverwendeten Phosphine wendel man in Mengen von 0,25 bis 30 mol je Grammatom Rhodium an.
Es ist möglich, die Umsetzung ohne Mitverwendung von Lösungsmitteln durchzuführen. In diesem Fall
dienen die Ausgangsstoffe (II) und deren Hydroformylierungsprodukte (I) als Lösungsmittel. Vorteilhaft führt
man die Umsetzung jedoch unter Mitverwendung von
ίο unter Reaktionsbedingungen inerten flüssigen Lösungsmitteln
durch, z. B. von Kohlenwasserstoffen wie Benzol, Toluol, Cyclohexan, Hexan oder Octan, ferner
Ethern wie Tetrahydrofuran oder Dioxan sowie Alkanolen wie Methanol oder Butanol.
Das Verfahren nach der Erfindung führt man beispielsweise aus, indem man in einem Hochdruckgefäß
die Ausgangsverbindungen (II) gegebenenfalls zusammen mit einem Lösungsmittel und dem Katalysator
vorlegt und diese Mischung mit dem Gemisch aus Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff umsetzt. Das Reaktionsgemisch
wird nach dem Abkühlen und Entspannen durch Destillation vom Katalysator abgetrennt. Aus
dem so erhaltenen Gemisch lassen sich die Verfahrensprodukte (I) ohne Schwierigkeiten nach bekannten
ι=, Methoden, z. B. fraktionierte Destillation, gewinnen.
Nichtumgesetzte Ausgangsstoffe können wieder der Reaktion zugeführt werden. Das Verfahren nach der
Erfindung läßt sich ohne Schwierigkeiten auch kontinuierlich gestalten.
jo Die Verbindungen (I) besitzen angenehme Riechstoffeigenschaften.
Besonders 3-(4-Isopropyl-phenyl)-butan-l-al und 3-(4-tert.-Butyl-phenyl)-butan-l-al eignen
sich vom Geruchscharakter her als Komponenten in Blütenölen mit Lavendel-, Maiglöckchen-, Linden-, Iris-,
ji Lilien-, Flieder- oder Cyclamencharakter. Daneben sind
die erfindungsgemäßen Verbindungen wertvolle Ausgangsstoffe zur Synthese pharmakologisch wirksamer
Mittel sowie von Pflanzenschutzmitteln und Farbstoffen.
■to Die Herstellung der Verbindungen (I) wird in den
folgenden Beispielen veranschaulicht. Die Abkürzung COD bedeutet jeweils Cycloocta-l,5-dien.
4-j In einem Hochdruckautoklaven von 101 Inhalt
wurden 3000 g 2-(4-Isopropyl-phenyl)-propan zusammen mit 75 mg dimerem COD-rhodiumchlorid
(RH(Cl)COD)2 und 3000 ml Benzol auf 1100C erwärmt
und unter einem Druck von 600 bar mit einem Gemisch
so von Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff (Volumenverhältnis 55 :45) umgesetzt. Durch Nachpressen des Gasgemisches
wurde der Druck 10 Stunden aufrechterhalten. Nach beendeter Reaktion wurde das Gemisch unter
Druck abgekühlt und danach entspannt. Das Reaktionsgemisch wurde in einer Kolonne fraktioniert destilliert,
wobei die Hauptfraktion bei 103°C/l,4 mbar überging.
Insgesamt fielen 2918 g 3-(4-Isopropyl-phenyl)-butan-1-al
an. Das 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazon des Aldehyds hatte einen Fp. von 108 bis 109° C.
B e i s ρ i e 1 2
In einem Hochdruckgefäß von 0,8 1 Inhalt wurden 150 g 3-Phenyl-pent-2-en zusammen mit 50 ppm Rhodium
als (Rh(Cl)COD)2 und 200 ml Benzol auf 110°C erwärmt und unter einem Druck von 600 bar mit
Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff (Volumenverhältnis CO: H2= 1:1) umgesetzt. Durch Nachpressen des
Gasgemisches wurde der Druck konstant gehalten. Der
Gasverbrauch innerhalb von 4 Stunden entsprach einem
Druckabfall um 220 bar. Die übliche Aufarbeitung des *eaktionsgemisches lieferte 143 g 2-Methyl-3-phenyljentan-1-al
vom Siedepunkt 121 bis 123cC/20 mbar.

lergestellt.
