Description
Herstellung von Kohlensäureestern
Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung
von Kohlensäureestern durch Umsetzung eines Alkohols mit Kohlenmonoxyd und Sauerstoff in Gegenwart eines katalytisohen
Systems, das zum Teil aus Kupfer, weiterhin aus Chlor oder Brom und aus bestimmten organischen Phosphorverbindungen aufgebaut
ist. Die katalytisehe Wirksamkeit der genannten Systeme kann durch
die Mitverwendung bestimmter Metallverbindungen zusätzlich gssteigert
werden.
Kohlensäureester haben, seitdem Polycarbonate ale wertvolle Kunststoffe
eine bedeutende Rolle spielen, eine entsprechende Bedeutung erlangt. Zu Polycarbonaten kommt man bekanntlich durch Umsetzung
von Glykolen oder Diphenolen mit Alkyl-, Aljcylaryl- oder A^rylcarbonaten.
Eine besondere Holle spielt bei der großtechnischen , Herstellung der Polycarbonate die Umsetzung von Bisphenol A mit
Phosgen oder die Umesterung dieses Diphenols mit Kohlensäureestern. Bisher werden die zuletztgenannten Ester durch Umsetzung eines
Alkohols mit Phosgen oder Chlorformiat in Gegenwart einer basischen anorganischen oder organischen Verbindung hergestellt. Nach der
DT-OS 21 10 191I- werden Kohlensäureester bei der Umsetzung eines
Alkohols mit Kohlenmonoxyd und Sauerstoff in Gegenwart eines Kata-·
lysators erhalten, der aus einer Verbindung eines Metalls der Gruppe Ib, Hb oder VIII des periodischen Systems besteht oder
eine solche Verbindung enthält. Die durch Beispiele belegte Ausführung in der Beschreibung, daß die Umsetzung bis zu einer
quantitativen Ausbeute, bezogen auf die eingesetzten Reaktanten ablaufe,
läßt die praktische Brauchbarkeit dieses Verfahrens zweifelhaft erscheinen. Nach den Beispielen betragen die Ausbeuten an Dime
thylcarbonat 96,2 #, an Diäthyloarbonat 97*5 %» *n Dibenzylcarbonat
96 % - und zwar in allen Fällen bezogen auf die als Katalysator eingesetzte Kupferverbindung. Führt man die gleiche

Auebeuttbereohnung bei dem Verfahren gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung duroh, bezieht man also die erhaltene Carbonsäureestermenge auf die Menge des im Katalysator enthaltenen Kupfers» so
kommt «an etwa bei Beispiel 3.auf einen Zahlenwert von rund 4j55O %. ·
Bs liegt auf der Hand, daß ein Verfahren, bei dem nach Beispiel 1 der DT-03 21 10 194 für die Herstellung von 370 t Dimethyloarbonat
424 t Kupferchlorid notwendig wären, nioht als technisch interessanter Prozeß angesprochen werden kann. - Ein in der genannten
Anmeldung enthält« β β viertes Beispiel hat eine etwa 5. Stunden
dauernd· kontinuierliche Durchführung des anmeldegemäßen Verfahrens
zugnGegenstand. Die mitgeteilten Werte lassen eine Aussage über die
Wirksamkeit von Kupferohlorür - dem einzigen beispielhaften Katalysator in dieser Anmeldung - bei der kontinuierlichen Durchführung
des anmeldegemäßen Verfahrens nioht zu.

In der R einen Kohlenwasserstoffrest aus der Gruppe der
Alkyl-, Aralkylr oder Cyoloalkylreste bedeutet,
duroh Umsetzung eines Alkohols ROH, wobei R die eben angegebene
Bedeutung besitzt, mit Kohlenmonoxyd und Sauerstoff in Gegenwart eines zum Teil aus Kupfer bestehenden Katalysators hergestellt
werden können. Das neue Verfahren ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Umsetzung in Gegenwart eines Katalysatorsystems durchgeführt
wird, das sich vor oder während der Reaktion aus einem Kupfersalz und, soweit dieses nioht ein Bromid oder Chlorid ist, aus einem im
Reaktionsmedium löslichen Chlorid oder Bromid eines anderen Netalls
und weiterhin aus einem Triarylphosphinoxyd oder einem organischen Phosphit, Phosphat oder Phosphonat gebildet hat bzw. bildet. Es sei
darauf hingewiesen, daß die Wirksamkeit der katalytischen Systeme,
an deren Aufbau ein Chlorid beteiligt Ißt, größer als die/zum Teil
aus,einen Bromid bestehenden Katalysatoren ist, jedoch bedeuten auoh die bromhaltigen Katalysatoren eine deutliche Verbesserung

gegenüber dem Verfahren gem. DT-OS 21 10 19^. Die katalytisehe
Wirksamkeit der genannten Systeme wird deutlich verbessert, wenn. diese zusätzlich aus einem Salz der Übergangemetalle der III. bis
VIII. Nebengruppe des periodischen Systems aufgebaut sind. Mit besonderem Vorteil verwendet man dabei Verbindungen des Gers,
Titans, Tantals, Wolframs, Rheniums und Eisens.
Von den zur Durchführung des erfindungsgeuäßen Verfahrene verwendbaren Alkoholen seien Methanol, Äthanol, Isopropylalkohol, Butanol,
Benzylalkohol oder Cyclohexanol beispielhaft genannt.
Zu den verwendbaren organischen Phosphorverbindungen gehören die
Triarylphosphinoxyde, z.B. Triphenylphosphinoxyd ©der auch alkyl-
oder halogensubstituierte Phosphinoxyde^ie Tris-p-ohlorphenylphosphinoxyd oder Tris-p-toluylphosphinoxyd, weiterhin Phosphite,
wie Triäthylphosphit oder Triallylphosphit, Phosphat· wie Trläthylphosphat oder imiiliiHM^Phosphat und gpfl^BPimphoBpha t.
Das Tris(2,5-Tribrompropyl)-phosphat kann.ebenso verwendet werden
wie Oligophosphate, von denen das im Beispiel 11 genannt· Oligophosphat unter dem Handelsnamen PHOSQARD bekannt 1st. Auch
Phosphonate, z.B.
sind, wie dies in einem der Beispiele näher erläutert wird, im Sinne
der Erfindung verwendbar. Beim Einbringen von z.B. Phosjphortrichlorid oder Phosphorpentaohlorid in Alkohol entstehen bekanntlich
die entsprechenden Ester der phosphorigen oder Phosphorsäure, so daß
man sich die erfindungsgemäß raitzuverwendenden Phosphite brw.
Phosphate durch Umsetzung des verwendeten Alkohols mit.den entsprechenden Halogeniden im Reaktionsgemisoh bilden lassen kann.
Obwohl für die Herstellung der neuen katalytisohen Systeme Kupfer
mit besonderem Vorteil in Form seines Chlorids oder Bromide eingesetzt wird, kann man auch von anderen löslichen Kupfersalzen, z.B.
von dem Acetat, Sulfat, Nitrat, Cyanid oder Aoetylaoetönat ausgehen, Jedoch ist in einem solchen Falle die Mitverwendung eines

anderen löslichen Chlorids oder Bromids unerläßlich.
über das katalytische Geschehen im einzelnen bestehen noch keine
gesicherten Vorstellungen. Die Wirksamkeit der verwendbaren katalytisohen
Systeme hängt bei sonst gleichen Umsetzungsbedingungen soweit die Vorstellung von der Bildung komplexer Kupferverbindungen
zutrifft - weitgehend von der Art der phosphorhaltigen Liganden ab.
Pur den erzielbaren Umsatz ist es weiterhin erforderlich, daß der
kupferhaltige Katalysator im Reaktionsmedium gelöst ist. Die Löslich
kelt von Kupfer-I-Ch3orid in Alkohol ist gering; sie kann durch den
Zusatz von Kupfer-II-Chlorid oder von löslichen Salzen der Übergangsmetalle
der III. bis VIII. Nebengruppe des periodischen Systems verbessert werden. Beispiele geei//neter Katalysatorkomponenten sind
Cer-III-chlorid, Titantetrachlorid, Titandichlorid-dimethylat, Zirkontetrachlorid,
Vanadinoxyohlorid, Tantaldiehlorid-trimethylat, Trichloro-trimethanolo-chrom-III, Wolframoxytetrachlorid, Rheniumpentaohlorid
und EisentriChlorid.
Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren erfordert die Anwendung von Druck, wobei der Partial druck von Kohlenmonoxyd und Sauerstoff zusammengenommen^
in gewissen Grenzen, z.B. 10 bis 150 atm, schwanken kann.
Wenn Sauerstoff in Form von Luft zur Anwendung kommt, ist der Druck entsprechend zu erhöhen. - Auch die Reaktionstemperatur kann in gewissen
Grenzen, z.B. innerhalb des Bereiches von 100 bis 2500C
schwanken.
Die nachstehenden Beispiele erJläxtern das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren,
ohne den nachgesuchten Schutz auf eben diese Ausführungsformen zu beschränken.

Bei allen Versuchen wurde folgendermaßen vorgegangen: In einem mit Teflon überzogenen heizbaren 2 1-Autoklaven wurde
das Reaktionsmedium mit Alkohol «.Is Lösungsmittel und dem Katalysator
vorgelegt. Danach wurde der Autoklav verschlossen, 40 atm
Kohlenmonoxid und 20 atm Sauerstoff bei Raumtemperatur aufgepreßt
und auf ebv/a ; ^O - 150°C hochgeheizt. Der Druck sinkt während der
Reaktion senr stark ab. Nach dem Abkühlen und Entspannen wurde
destillativ aufgearbeitet. Das Carbonat wird mit Hilfe der kernmagnetisch^ Resonanzspektroskopie, der Massenspektroskopie
und der GasChromatographie identifiziert.
2 g Cer-IV-sulfat, 2 g Kupfer-II-chlorld und 5 g Triphenylphosphinoxid
werden in 700 ml Methanol 2 h refluxiert. Danach wird die Reaktionslösung in den Autoklaven gegeben und wie oben
beschrieben mit Kohlenmonoxid und Sauerstoff umgesetzt. Es werden 90,6 g Dimethylcarbonat gebildet.

0In der R einen Kohlenwasserstoffrest aus der Gruppe der Alkyl-, Aralkyl- oder Cycloalkylreste bedeutet, durch Umsetzung eines Alkohols ROH, wobei R die eben angegebene Bedeutung besitzt, mit CO und Sauerstoff in Gegenwart eines zum Teil aus Kupfer bestehenden Katalysators,dadurch gekennzeichnet,daß die Umsetzung in Gegenwart eines Katalysatorsystems durchgeführt wird, das sich vor oder während der Reaktion aus einem Kupfersalz und, soweit dieses nicht das Chlorid oder Bromid ist, aus dem Chlorid oder Bromid eines anderen Metalls und weiterhin aus einem Triarylphosphinoxyd oder einem organischen Phosphit, Phosphat oder Phosphonat gebildet hat bzw. bildet. - 2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Katalysatorsystem zusätzlich aus einem Salz, insbesondere dem Chlorid oder Bromid der Ubergangsmetalle der III. bis VIII. Nebengruppe des periodischen Systems aufgebaut ist.5· Verfahren nach den Ansprüchen 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das sich bildende Katalysatorsystem im Reaktionsmedium gelöst ist.509816/1209
