Die Erfindung betrifft Gemische von 2-Hydroxy-4-iso-alkoxybenzophenonen
der allgemeinen Formel

in der R für Gemische in statistischer Verteilung verzweigter Alkylreste mit 6 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen
steht, die sich von den entsprechenden nach der Oxosynthese erhaltenen Alkoholgemischen ableiten,
sowie die Verwendung dieser Verbindungsgemische zum Stabilisieren von Polymeren gegen Zersetzung
durch UV-Licht
Die Verwendung fester 2-Hydroxy-4-octoxybenzophenone, in denen der Octylrest der n-Octyl- oder
2-Äthylhexylrest ist, als UV-Stabilisatoren ist bekannt.
Verbindungen dieser Art sind in der US-PS 28 61 105 und in der DE-OS 18 06 870 beschrieben. Da diese w
Verbindungen fest sind, haben sie bestimmte unvermeidliche Nachteile.
Demgegenüber haben die neuartigen flüssigen Gemische von 2-Hydroxy-4-iso-alkoxybenzophenonen
gemäß der Erfindung Vorteile, daß sie
a) sich leichter in den meisten Lösungsmitteln und Weichmachern lösen
b) bei ihrer Einarbeitung in Polymere keine Staubprobleme verursachen f>o
c) sich leichter und gleichmäßiger' in Polymere einarbeiten lassen
d) mit den meisten Polymeren besser verträglich sind und weniger ausschwitzen
e) durch Wasser in geringerem Maße aus den Polymeren extrahiert werden
f) aufgrund ihrer besseren Verträglichkeit eine bessere Stabilisierung bewirken und
g) pigmentdispergierende Eigenschaften haben, wenn pigmentierte Polymere hergestellt werden, ohne
daß hierdurch die stabilisierende Wirkung beeinträchtigt wird.
Die erfindungsgemäßen, bis herab zu 00C flüssigen
Gemische sind, wie später in der Tabelle 2 gezeigt wird, in ihrer Wirkung bekannten Stabilisatoren überlegen.
Außerdem lassen sie sich, da sie flüssig sind, leichter handhaben und gleichmäßiger in Polymere einarbeiten
als die bekannten festen Stabilisatoren. Dabei ist überraschend, daß Verbindungen mit zwei Benzolkernen
und einem linearen Alkoxysubstituenten, die bei Temperaturen von 0°C bis Raumtemperatur fest sind,
flüssig werden, wenn man in diesem großen Molekül den linearen Substituenten durch verzweigte Substituenten
gleicher Kohlenstoffzahl ersetzt
Man erhält die erfindungsgemäßen Gemische durch Umsetzung von 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenon mit einem
»Oxott-Isoalkylhalogenid der Formel RX, wobei R die
vorstehende Bedeutung hat und X Chlor, Brom oder Jod ist Beispiele hierfür sind »Oxott-Octylchlorid, »Oxo«-
Octylbromid, »Oxow-Octyljodid, »Oxow-Hexylchlorid,
»Oxo«-Decylchlorid, »Oxow-Heptylchlorid und »Oxo«-
Nonylchlorid.
Die »Oxo«-Halogenide erhält man aus den entsprechenden
»Oxo«-Alkoholen, d.h. Gemischen isomerer, im »Oxo«-Verfahren anfallender Alkohole, die auch als
Iso-Alkohole bezeichnet werden und Gemische verzweigtkettiger primärer Alkohole darstellen, vgl.
Kirk-Othmer »Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology«, 2. Auflage, Band 14, Seiten 373 bis 374. Ein typisches im
Handel erhältliches Isooctanol hat die folgende Zusammensetzung:
20% ?,4-Dimethyl-l -hexanol,
30% 3,5-Dimethyl-l-hexanol,
30% 4,5-Dimethyl-l -hexanol,
15% 3-Methyl-1 -heptanol und
5-Methyl-l-heptanol sowie
5% nicht identifizierte Alkohole,
30% 3,5-Dimethyl-l-hexanol,
30% 4,5-Dimethyl-l -hexanol,
15% 3-Methyl-1 -heptanol und
5-Methyl-l-heptanol sowie
5% nicht identifizierte Alkohole,
während ein typisches im Handel erhältliches Isodecanol
aus einem Gemisch einer Vielzahl primärer gesättigter Alkohole mit 10 Kohlenstoffatomen besteht.
Es enthält überwiegend ein Gemisch aus Trimethylheptanolen und geringere Mengen anderer isomerer
primärer gesättigter Decanole. Ein anderes im Handel erhältliches Isoalkanol ist Aiphanoi 79, ein Gemisch
primärer gesättigter Alkanole mit 7,8 und 9 Kohlenstoffatomen mit Methylseitenketten.
Im allgemeinen enthalten die im »Oxo«-Verfahren hergestellten Iso-Alkohole und die daraus erhältlichen
Iso-Alkylhalogenide mindestens 10% mindestens dreier
verschiedener verzweigtkettiger isomerer.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Gemische enthalten somit
2-Hydroxy-4-iso-hexoxy-benzophenon,
2-Hydroxy-4-iso-heptoxy-benzophenon,
2-Hydroxy-4-iso-octoxy-benzophenon,
2-Hydroxy-4-iso-nonoxy-benzophenonund
2-HydΓoxy-4-iso-decoxy-benzophenon.
Alle diese Iso-alkoxyverbindungeri sind bei Zimmertemperatur
und erheblich darunter, z. B. bis 00C flüssig.
Nachfolgend beziehen sich alle Teü- und Prozentangaben
auf das Gewicht, sofern nichts anderes vermerkt ist.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Gemische stellen wertvolle UV-Stabilisatoren für Polymere dar, z. B. für halogen-
haltige Harze, insbesondere Vinylchloridpolymere, und
für Olefinpolymere, insbesondere Polypropylen. Von ganz besonderem Wert sind sie ifür feste Polymere.
Als halogenhaltige Polymere können solche aus Vinyl- bzw. Vinylidenverbindungen, wie Vinylchlorid,
Vinylidenchlorid, Vinylchloracetat, Chlorstyrolen, Vinylbromid
und Chlorbutadienen verwendet werden.
Die Vinylidenverbindungen können allein oder im Gemisch miteinander oder mit halogenfreien Vinylidenverbindungen
polymerisiert sein. In den halogenfreien Verbindungen, die mit halogenhaltigen Vinyl- bzw.
Vinylidenverbindungen, z. B. Vinylchlorid, copolymerisiert
sein können, gehören unter anderem Carbonsäurevinylester, z. B. Vinylacetat, Vinylbutyrat, Ester ungesättigter
Säuren, z. B. Acrylsäurester, wie Methylacrylat,
ÄthylacrySat, Butylacrylat und Allylacrylat sowie die
entsprechenden Methacrylate, ζ. B Methylmethacrylat
und Butylraethacrylat, vinylaromatische Verbindungen,
z. B. Styrol, Divinylbenzol. «-Methylstyrol, p-Methylstyrol,
Diene, wie Butadien und isopren, ungesättigte Amide, wie Acrylamid, Methacrylamid sowie Ester
«^-ungesättigter Carbonsäuren, z. B. Methyl-, Äthyl-,
Propyl-, Butyl-, Amyl-, Hexyl-, Heptyl-, Octyl-, Allyl-,
Methallyl- oder Phenylester der Malein-, Croton-, Itaeon- und Fumarsäure. Spezielle Beispiele für
derartige Ester sind Diäthylmaleat, Dibutylmaleat und Dibutylfumarat
Copolymere, bei denen mindestens 50% des Copolymeren
aus einer halogenhaltigen Vinylidenverbindung, wie Vinylchlorid, bestehen, eignen sich besonders gut für
die erfindungsgemäße Stabilisierung.
Die Stabilisierungsmittel gemäß der Erfindung sind auch wirksam, wenn sie innig mit halogenhaltigen
Polymeren vermischt werden, bei denen ein Teil oder das gesamte Halogen in das fertige Polymere eingeführt
wurde, z.B. chloriertes Polyvinylacetat, chloriertes Polystyrol, chlorierte Polyäthylen, chloriertes Polyvinylchlorid,
chlorierter Natur- oder Synthesekautschuk oder Kautschukhydrochlorid.

Der Kunststoff, z. B. Polyvinylchlorid, kann Weichmacher enthalten oder nicht. Die Weichmacher können die
üblichen sein, wie
Dioctylphthalat,
Octyldecylphthalat,
Tricresylphosphat,
2-Äthylhexyldiphenylphosphat,
Dodecyldicresylphosphat,
Tributylacetylcitrat,
Dioctylsebacat und
Dibutylsebacat.
Der Weichmacher wird in herkömmlichen Mengen von beispielsweise 10 bis 100 Teilen je 100 Teile vinylchloridhaltiges
Harz verwendet.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Stabilisierungsmittel werden in Mengen von 0,05 bis 20 und vorzugsweise von 0,1 bis
10 Gewichtsteilen je 100 Gewichtsteile halogenhaltiges
Harz eingesetzt. Weiterhin können 0,1 bis 10 Gewichtsteile je 100 Gewichtsteile Harz an herkömmlichen
Metallsalzstabilisatoren zugesetzt werden, z. B. Barium-, Strontium-, Calcium-, Cadmium-. Zink-, Blei-, Zinn-,
Magnesium-, Kobalt-, Nickel-, Titan- und Aluminiumsalze von Phenolen, aromatischen Carbonsäuren, Fettsäuren
und Epoxyfettsäuren.

Bei Plastisolzusammensetzungen werden vorzugsweise ferner 0,1 bis 10 Teile je 100 Teile Harz eines
epoxydierten Pflanzenöls, z. B. epoxydiertes Sojabohnenöl
oder epoxydiertes Tallöl zugesetzt
Weiterhin kann ein Phosphit zugegeben werden, z. B. ein Alkyl-, Aryl- oder Aralkylphosphit in einer Menge
von 0,1 bis 10 Gewichtsteilen je 100 Gewichtsteile Harz. Typische Beispiele für derartige Phosphite sind

Die erfindungsgemäßen Gemische eignen sich auch als Stabilisatoren für Monoolefinpolymere, wie Polyäthylen,
Polypropylen, Äthylen-Propylen-Copolymere (z. B. 50 : 50, 80 : 20 und 20 :80), Äthylen-Monoolefin-Copolymere,
bei denen das Monoolefin 4 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatome enthält und in einem geringeren
Anteil vorhanden ist, weiterhin für Naturkautschuk, Styrol-Butadien-Kautschuk (SBR-Kautschuk) sowie
EPDM-Kautschukarten und Acrylnitril-Butadien-Styrol-Terpolymere
(ABS).
Als EPDM-Kautschuk können viele der handelsüblichen EPDM-Kautschukarten eingesetzt werden. Hinsichtlich
der EPDM-Kautschuke und anderer Terpolymerer wird auf die US-Patentschriften 29 33 480,
30 00 866, 30 63 973, 30 93 620, 30 93 621, 31 36 739, die GB-PS 8 80 904 und die BE-PS 6 23 698 verwiesen.
Weiterhin können schwefelhaltige Verbindungen als Stabilisatoren für Olefinpolymere zugesetzt sein. So
können zusammen mit den erfindungsgemäßen Gemischen neutrale Schwefelverbindungen mit einer Thiobindung
in 0-Stellung zu einem Kohlenstoffatom, das
sowohl ein Wasserstoffatom als auch eine Carboxylgruppe trägt, eingesetzt werden. Diese Verbindungen
werden in einer Menge von 0,01 bis 10, vorzugsweise von 0,1 bis 5% angewandt Auch jJ-Thiocarboxylverbindungen,
die durch Addition einer Verbindung der Formel RSH an die Doppelbindung eines Maleinsäureesters
erhältlich sind, wobei R ein Alkyl-, Aryl-, ίο
Alkylcarboxyalkyl-, Arylcarboxyalkyl- oder Aralkylrest
ist, oder ]3-Thiocarboxyiverbindungen, die durch Addition
eines Mercaptans RSH der vorstehenden Definition an die Doppelbindung von Dialkylitaconaten.
-citraconaten, -fumaraten, oder Trialkylaconitaten gebildet werden, können verwendet werden.
Die thermische Stabilität von Polypropylen und anderen Monoolefinpolymeren wird durch Verunreinigungen,
einschließlich Katalysatorresten beeinträchtigt. Wenn neben der Oxydationsstabi!:.tät auch noch die
thermische Stabilität verbessert werden soll, hat es sich als günstig erwiesen, den Monoolefinpolymer-Formulierungen
Fettsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle in einer Menge von 0,0t bis 10 und vorzugsweise von 0,1 bis 5%
zuzusetzen.
Außerdem können phenolische Antioxydantien in einer Menge von 0,01 bis 10, vorzugsweise von 0,1 bis
5% zugefügt werden, vgl. hierzu auch die BE-PS 7 10 873 und die FR-PS 15 36 020.
Bei Verwendung von Epoxyverbändungen werden diese in einer Menge von 0,01 bis 5% eingesetzt.
Schließlich können als Antioxydations- uno Stabilisierungsmittel Phosphite und Thiophosphite verwendet
werden. Dabei kommt das Phosphit oder Thiophosphit in einer Menge von 0,01 bis 10%, bezogen auf das zu
stabilisierende Polymere zur Anwendung, siehe hierzu auch die US-PS 30 39 993, 30 47G08, 30 53 878 und
33 41 629.

Die Ausgangsverbindungen wurden in ein Druckgefäß gegeben und insgesamt 4 Stunden unter mechanischem
Rühren auf 1500C erhitzt. Anschließend wurde das Gemisch in ein Gefäß übergeführt und der
überwiegende Teil des Acetons für eine erneute Verwendung entfernt. Der Rückstand wurde in 4 Liter
Wasser gegossen, die obere Schicht abgetrennt, in einen Destillationskolben übergeführt und fraktioniert. Das
bei 1 Torr zwischen 220 und 2250C übergehende Destillat wurde abgetrennt. Ein kleiner Vorlauf wurde
verworfen. Die Ausgeute betrug 0,97 Mol (97% der Theorie). Im Gegensatz hierzu gibt die DE-OS 18 06 870
eine maximale Ausbeute an 4-n-Octoxy-2 hydroxybenzophenon von 59% an.

in Beispiel ! durch 1,2 Mol »Oxow-hexylchlorid
ersetzte. »Oxo«-4-decyloxy-2-hydroxybenzophenon wurde erhalten, wenn man anstelle von »Oxo«-octylchlorid
1,2 Mol »Oxo«-decylchlorid verwendete.
a) Die Eigenschaften von 4-«Iso«-octoxy-2-hydroxybenzophenon als UV-Stabilisierungsmittel wurden
an einem Polyvinylchlorid untersucht, das einmal in durchsichtiger Torrn und einmal pigmentiert
vorlag. Die in Teilen angegebenen Zusammensetzungen waren wie folgt:

Der Test erstreckte sich über eine Zeitspanne von Stunden während der mit einer Quarzlampe
(General Electric) unter Verwendung eines Ik schleunigungsmessers mit UV-Licht bestrahlt win
de. Am Ende der Bestrahlung zeigten sowohl da durchsichtige als auch das pigmentierte Polymer'
eine geringere Verfärbung als Vergleichsprobci ohne die »Isox-octoxyverbindung. Die Probci
waren auch ähnlichen Zusammensetzungen iiberle gen, die 0,5 Teile 4-n-Octoxy-2-hydroxybenzophe
non als UV-Stabilisator enthielten,
b) Man arbeitete wie unter a). jedoch mit de Abweichung, daß die beiden Acrylsäurcmodifizie rungsmittel nicht zugesetzt waren, so daß Polyvi nylchloridzusammensetzungen vorlagen, die nich schlagfest gemacht waren. Das 4-»lso«-octoxy-2 hydroxybenzophenon war auch bei dieser durch sichtigen bzw. pigmentierten Zusammensetzung al UV-Stabiiisator wirksam.
b) Man arbeitete wie unter a). jedoch mit de Abweichung, daß die beiden Acrylsäurcmodifizie rungsmittel nicht zugesetzt waren, so daß Polyvi nylchloridzusammensetzungen vorlagen, die nich schlagfest gemacht waren. Das 4-»lso«-octoxy-2 hydroxybenzophenon war auch bei dieser durch sichtigen bzw. pigmentierten Zusammensetzung al UV-Stabiiisator wirksam.

1. Gemische von 2-Hydroxy-4-iso-alkoxy-benzophenonen
der allgemeinen Formel

in der R für Gemische in statistischer Verteilung verzweigter Alkylreste mit 6 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen
steht, die sich von den entsprechenden, nach der Oxosynthese erhaltenen Alkoholgemischen ableiten.
2. Verwendung der Verbindungsgemische nach Anspruch 1 zum Stabilisieren von Polymeren gegen
Zersetzung durch UV-Licht
