Description
Alkylierte 1,1,3-Trimethylindane sin(j neue Verbindungen,
die dadurch hergestellt werden, daß 1,4- oder l,3-Bis-[a-hydroxy-isopropyl]-benzol mit
einem Phenol der Formel

worin R und R' Methyl, Äthyl, Methoxy, Äthoxy, Chlor, Brom, Jod oder Fluor sind und χ und y
jedes entweder 0 oder 1 ist, im Molverhältnis von 1 : 0,5 bis 1 : 4 bei 30 bis 2000C umgesetzt werden
und daß dabei als Katalysator ein säureaktivierter Ton verwendet wird. Vorzugsweise werden für die
Umsetzung 0,8 bis 1,1 Mol des Phenols je Mol des Diisopropylbenzoldiols verwendet, und die Umsetzung
erfolgt bei 80 bis 1500C in einem bei den Reaktionsbedingungen inerten organischen Lösungsmittel.
Alkylierte 1,1,3-Trimethylindane können mit Epichlorhydrin
zu Epoxyharzen umgesetzt werden.
Die Umsetzung erfolgt bei Verwendung von l,3-Bis-[a-hydroxy-isopropyl]-benzol nach der folgenden
Gleichung:

worin q eine ganze Zahl von wenigstens 2 ist und R, R', χ und y die oben angegebenen Bedeutungen
haben.
1,4- und l,3-Bis-[(x-hydroxy-isopropyl]-benzol sind weiße kristalline Feststoffe vom F. 141 bzw. 136°C.
Das für die Umsetzung verwendete Phenol kann beispielsweise

Wenn eine gute Ausbeute an den alkylierten 1,1,3-Trimethylindanen erzielt werden soll, müssen
die Reaktionsbedingungen sorgfältig gesteuert werden. Eine dieser Bedingungen ist das Molverhältnis
der Reaktionsteilnehmer. Es wurde gefunden, daß bei Verwendung von mehr als 4 Mol der Phenolverbindung
je Mol des Diisopropylbenzoldiols ein Reaktionsprodukt erhalten wird, das etwa 50 Gewichtsprozent
oder mehr an Verunreinigungen enthält, während bei Verwendung von weniger als etwa 0,5MoI der Phenolverbindung je Mol des
Diisopropylbenzoldiols eine beträchtliche Menge an 1,1,3-Trimethylindanen ohne p-Phenolendgruppen
gebildet wird. Daher werden 0,5 bis 4 Mol, vorzugsweise 0,8 bis 3 Mol und insbesondere 0,8 bis 1,1 Mol
Phenol je Mol Diisopropylbenzol-a,a'-diol verwendet.
Weiterhin wurde gefunden, daß keine beträchtliche Umsetzung zwischen dem Phenol und dem Diisopropylbenzol-a,a'-diol
erfolgt, wenn kein Katalysator verwendet wird. Die üblicherweise verwendeten Mineralsäuren oder Lewis-Säuren haben sich als
unwirksam erwiesen. Dagegen werden beträchtliche Ausbeuten in der Größenordnung von etwa 70 bis
etwa 95% der Theorie an dem gewünschten alkylierten 1,1,3-Trimethylindan erhalten, wenn als
Katalysator ein säureaktivierter Ton, der hauptsächlich aus Siliciumdioxyd und Aluminiumoxyd
besteht, verwendet wird. Vorzugsweise wird ein säureaktivierter nichtquellbarer Bentonitton aus etwa
40 bis 90 Gewichtsprozent Siliciumdioxyd und etwa 3 bis 20% Aluminiumoxyd zusammen mit einer
geringen Menge an einem oder mehreren Oxyden anderer Metalle, wie Eisen, Magnesium, Natrium,
Calcium oder Kalium, verwendet. Die verwendete Menge an Katalysator ist nicht kritisch und kann
in einem weiten Bereich variieren. Im allgemeinen können bis zu 40 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf
die Menge der Reaktionsteilnehmer, verwendet werden, und vorzugsweise werden 5 bis 20 Gewichtsprozent
verwendet.
Ein poröser Ton kann nach irgendeinem bekannten, geeigneten Verfahren säureaktiviert werden. Bei-
spielsweise kann eine Aufschlämmung von 1 Gewichtsteil Ton in 10 Gewichtsteilen 5%iger Mineralsäure
1 Stunde gekocht werden. Die überschüssige verbrauchte Säure kann dann von dem Ton zuerst
durch Absitzenlassen und Dekantieren und dann durch Abpressen des nassen Tons entfernt werden.
Das so erhaltene säureaktivierte Material kann dann in einem Vakuumtrockner zu einem Pulver getrocknet
werden.

erfolgt vorzugsweise in einem Lösungsmittel, da die Umsetzung sonst nicht in gewünschter
Weise fortschreitet. Die Menge an Lösungsmittel kann in einem beträchtlichen Bereich variieren.
Bei der praktischen Durchführung des Verfahrens wurden mit einem organischen Lösungsmittel in
einer Menge von etwa 50 bis 200 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf die Menge an Reaktionsteilnehmern,
gute Ergebnisse erzielt. Geeignet sind im allgemeinen organische Lösungsmittel, die bei den Bedingungen
der Umsetzung inert sind und das alkylierte 1,1,3-Trimethylindan
lösen. Beispiele für geeignete Lösungsmittel sind Benzol, Toluol, Xylol, sym.-Tetrachloräthan
und Cyclohexan.
Die Reaktionstemperatur kann in dem Bereich von 30 bis etwa 200 0C variieren. Optimale Ausbeuten
werden erzielt, wenn die Reaktionstemperatur in dem Bereich von 80 bis 1500C gehalten wird.
Vorzugsweise werden das Diisopropylbenzoldiol und das Phenol in einem geeigneten Lösungsmittel
gelöst, und die Lösung wird etwa 1 Stunde lang mit einem säureaktivierten Ton auf 80 bis 150°C
erhitzt. Der Katalysator wird vom Reaktionsgemisch abfiltriert, und das Reaktionsprodukt wird durch
Zugabe von Wasser zu dem Reaktionsgemisch und anschließende Entfernung des organischen Lösungsmittels
durch azeotropische Destillation isoliert. Von der dabei zurückbleibenden wäßrigen Phase
kann dann das unlösliche alkylierte 1,1,3-Trimethylindan
abfiltriert werden. Etwa anwesende Verunreinigungen in der Form von l,4-Bis-(p-hydroxycumyl)-benzol
können durch Zugabe eines geeigneten Lösungsmittels, wie Tetrachlorkohlenstoff, und anschließendes
Abfiltrieren des gereinigten alkylierten 1,1,3-Trimethylindans und übliches Trocknen abgetrennt
werden.
Die Erfindung soll im folgenden an Hand von Beispielen näher veranschaulicht werden.
B e i s ρ i e 1 1
Ein mit einem mechanischen Rührer ausgestattetes Reaktionsgefäß wurde mit 36,9 Teilen l,4-Bis-[a-hydroxy
- isopropyl] - benzol, 15 Teilen Phenol und 60 Teilen Benzol als Lösungsmittel beschickt. Dann
wurden 6 Teile eines säureaktivierten Tons (Analyse: Siliciumdioxyd 87%, Aluminiumoxyd 13%, Porendurchmesser
200 A, Oberfläche 300 bis 600m2/g) als Katalysator zugesetzt. Das Reaktionsgemisch
wurde 8 Stunden auf eine Temperatur von 8O0C erwärmt, wonach die Temperatur des Reaktionsgemisches auf 25° C gesenkt und der Katalysator
abfiltriert wurde. Der Rückstand wurde mit 30 Teilen Benzol gewaschen, und das dabei erhaltene Filtrat
wurde mit dem zuvor bei der Abtrennung des Katalysators erhaltenen Filtrat vereinigt.
Den vereinigten Filtraten wurden 250 Teile Wasser zugesetzt, um eine Abtrennung des Benzols durch
azeotropische Destillation (bei 69,5 0C) zu ermöglichen.
Von der zurückbleibenden wäßrigen Phase wurden 44 Teile rohes p-phenolalkyliertes 1,1,3-Trimethylindan
abfiltriert, das nach Pulverisieren und Trocknen 15 Minuten mit 150 Teilen Tetrachlorkohlenstoff
von 77° C gemischt wurde, um Verunreinigungen abzutrennen. Die erhaltene Lösung wurde auf Zimmertemperatur gekühlt und 10 Stunden
stehengelassen, während welcher Zeit sich 6,4 Teile an Verunreinigungen abtrennten, die abfiltriert
wurden. Das Filtrat wurde destilliert, um den Tetrachlorkohlenstoff abzutrennen. Man erhielt
37,6 Teile, entsprechend einer Ausbeute von 85,5%, eines zusammengeschmolzenen festen Materials,
das als das p-phenolalkylierte Trimere von 1,1,3-Trimethylindan
identifiziert wurde.
Die Infrarotspektralanalyse des Produktes ergab Absorptionsbanden bei 12,09 und 11,32 μ, die die
Anwesenheit von 1,2,4-trisubstituierten Benzolringen anzeigen. Absorptionsbanden bei 7,30 und 7,35.μ
wiesen auf eine an dem cyclischen gesättigten fünfgliedrigen Ring gebundene Dimethylgruppe hin.
Starke Absorptionsbanden bei 2,99 und 8,20 μ wiesen auf die Anwesenheit phenolischer Hydroxylgruppen
hin. Die Elementaranalyse ergab 85,9% Kohlenstoff und 8,38% Wasserstoff (berechnet:
87,8% Kohlenstoff und 8,19% Wasserstoff).
Die potentiometrische Titration der phenolischen Hydroxylgruppen ergab 4,22% phenolische Hydroxygruppen
(berechnet 4,15%). Das Molekulargewicht der Verbindung wurde zu 880 bestimmt (berechnet 820). Das isolierte p-phenolalkylierte
1,1,3-Trimethylindan hatte einen Erweichungspunkt
im Bereich von 90 bis 105 0C und eine inherent viscosity von 0,03 bei 30° C in der Form einer
Lösung von 5 Gewichtsprozent in Benzol. Das Produkt hat vermutlich die folgende Formel:

Beispiele 2 bis 6
Das Verfahren vom Beispiel 1 wurde unter Verwendung . verschiedener Mengen an Reaktionsteilnehmern
und Anwendung variierender Reaktionsbedingungen wiederholt. Die Einzelheiten dieser
Versuche sind in der Tabelle zusammengestellt. Alle Produkte der Beispiele 2 bis 4 und 6 haben die
allgemeine Formel II. η ist im Beispiel 2 gleich 2,

Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch:Verfahren zur Herstellung alkylierter 1,1,3-Trimethylindane, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß 1,4- oder l,3-Bis-[a-hydroxy-isopropyl]-benzol mit einem Phenol der Formel:OHworin R und R' Methyl, Äthyl, Methoxy, Äthoxy, Chlor, Brom, Jod oder Fluor sind und χ und y jedes entweder 0 oder 1 ist, im Molverhältnisvon 1 : 0,5 bis 1 : 4 bei 30 bis 2000C umgesetzt werden und daß als Katalysator ein säureaktivierter Ton verwendet wird.
