Description
Process for the introduction of pure metals in finest distribution in Carbon bodies The invention relates to a method with which pure metals, in particular Fe, can be introduced into carbon bodies in extremely fine distribution. The process consists in impregnating the carbon bodies with metal carbonyls and in the - Subsequent thermal decomposition of the carbonyls.
It is known to add iron carbonyl to a coke-pitch mixture, from which carbon bodies are then made. The iron carbonyl is only used there as a condensing agent.
It is also known to have carbon or electrographite bodies melted To impregnate metals and make them gas and liquid tight. It is also known to add iron oxide to purified graphite and then this mixture to be pressed into moldings and annealed. These moldings can, for example, as Collector carbons are used.
It is also known to impregnate artificial charcoal with a metal salt solution. In order to introduce a larger amount of metal into the pores of the coal objects, after soaking, the water can be removed by drying. Then it is possible to introduce the same amount of metal by re-impregnating. This process must be repeated three, four or even five times, so that a sufficient amount Metal is deposited in the pores of the coal. This procedure is obvious lengthy and costly. The first two procedures are simple, but they do not bring about such a fine distribution of the iron in the carbon and graphite bodies, how they z. B. in spectral carbon to record a pure iron reference spectrum be desired. Attempts have therefore been made to use so-called wick charcoal for this purpose, d. H. Coals that have an easily vaporizable wick containing iron.
Usually iron reference spectra are made with the help of massive electrodes made of pure iron in the spark or in the arc. This replaces the analysis light source in the meantime through an iron arch. When changing the carbon electrodes of the Analysis light source, the arc current must always be readjusted because the Carbon electrodes require around 10 amps to generate a suitable arc, while the iron electrodes only need 2 amps. The readjustment of the amperage takes time and effort. The iron-containing carbon electrodes can be used without readjustment the current intensity can be exchanged for the spectral carbon used for the analysis.
Wick charcoals can only be produced as rod-shaped electrodes, not but as spectral carbon disks, as they are for the metal spectroscopes from Fuess, Berlin-Steglitz, find use. Up to now, disk electrodes made of pure iron had to be used here for the Al and Cu analysis. These electrodes made of pure iron cost but about six times as much as those made from spectrally pure coal.
According to the invention it is now proposed to use the purest metals in the finest To introduce distribution in carbon bodies by metal carbonyls, in such a way that the completely burned carbon bodies impregnated with the corresponding metal carbonyls and then heated to the decomposition temperature of the metal carbonyls.
Are z. B. the carbon bodies with liquid iron carbonyl Fe (C0) 5 soaked and then heated to over 140 ° C in a closed container, so the iron carbonyl which has penetrated the coal breaks down into iron and carbon monoxide. In this process, the iron is evenly distributed over the entire cross-section of the coal distributed. A storage of iron in the carbon body can also be done by passing it over of Fe (C O) 5 reach steam via the heated carbon bodies. The latter However, the method is only suitable for thin rods, with thicker carbon bodies the iron on the inside is less pronounced than on the surface.
It is known that the decomposition of iron carbonyl produces purer products Iron than in the reduction of iron salts or other iron compounds.
As already mentioned, those impregnated with the purest iron are suitable Spectral carbons are particularly good for recording iron reference spectra, as one by simply exchanging the spectral carbon electrodes used for analysis against Fe-containing carbon electrodes without changing the electrical excitation conditions can generate a pure iron comparison spectrum. The with the invention procedure treated spectral carbons are only slightly more expensive than pure spectral carbons. Another advantage of the process is that the iron carbonyl is in alcohol, ether or dissolved benzene and so, depending on the degree of dissolution, a slight dosage of the to be introduced Iron amount-can be made. The process is not only suitable for Deposits of iron in carbon bodies, but generally for the introduction of all metals, form the carbonyls, e.g. B. nickel, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, etc. With this Processes can easily introduce metal additives into carbon brushes and so their running properties are changed.
The method can also be used for the production of calibration charcoals with exactly known Iron content can be used.
