Die Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung von organischen Metallsalzkomplexen oder -gemischen, die aus Salzen von
Erdalkalien, einschließlich Magnesium, wenigstens einer niedermolekularen Monocarbonsäure mit 1 bis 3 C-Atomen
und wenigstens einer mittelmolekularen Carbonsäure mit 7 bis 10 C-Atomen bestehen, als Bestandteile von Schmiermitteln,
d. h. von solchen Salzgemischen oder -komplexen, die sich aus wenigstens einem Metallsalz einer niedrigmolekularen Monocarbonsäure mit 1 bis 3 C-Atomen und
wenigstens einem Metallsalz einer mittehnolekularen Carbonsäure von etwa 7 bis 10 C-Atomen zusammensetzen
und in denen das Molverhältnis der niedrigmolekularen zu der mittehnolekularen Carbonsäure oberhalb etwa 2 :1
und unter etwa 40:: 1 liegt. Schmiermittel, welche diese Stoffe enthalten, zeigen ein hervorragendes Hochdruckverhalten neben anderen erwünschten Eigenschaften.
Vorliegende Erfindung beruht auf der Erkenntnis, daß mittelmolekulare Carbonsäuren, die außerhalb des Bereiches
der üblichen seifebildenden Säuren liegen, an Stelle der bisher benutzten hochmolekularen Fettsäuren als
Komponente von Komplexverbindungen oder Gemischen mit Salzen niedrigmolekularer Monocarbonsäuren zur
Verwendung als Schmiermittelbestandteil geeignet sind. Das Molverhältnis der niedrigmolekularen zur mittelmolekularen
Säure kann bereits 2:1 betragen. Im Sinne der Erfindung werden die aliphatischen Carbonsäuren mit
etwa 7 bis 10 C-Atomen, die bezüglich der Kettenlänge und des Molekulargewichtes zwischen den niedrig- und
hochmolekularen Carbonsäuren hegen, als mittelmolekulare Carbonsäuren bezeichnet.
Der Chemismus der Salzkomplexe oder -gemische ist noch nicht völlig aufgeklärt. Die Herstellungstemperatur
scheint einen bestimmten Einfluß auf die physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften auszuüben. Wenn die
Salze beispielsweise auf etwa 65 bis 95° C erwärmt werden (nach oder während ihrer Herstellung durch gemeinsame
Neutralisation der Säuren), liegen Anzeichen vor, daß die
Produkte ein physikalisches Gemisch darstellen. Dieses Gemisch ist wasserhaltig, da es das Reaktionswasser oder
das mit den Reaktionsteilnehmern eingeführte Wasser enthält. Der Wasseranteil der Metallsalzgemische kann
weitgehend variieren; gewöhnlich beträgt er etwa 0,5 bis 15 Gewichtsprozent, vorzugsweise 1 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent,
bezogen auf das gesamte wasserhaltige Metallsalzgemisch. Eine Herstellungstemperatur von etwa 120 bis 177° C
scheint auch zu einem Gemisch zu führen, das aber wasserfrei ist und dessen Eigenschaften sich von denen
des vorhergenannten Gemisches merklich unterscheiden. Temperaturen oberhalb etwa205° C führen augenscheinlich
zu Salzkomplexen.

Röntgenlicht erzeugten Beugungsbilder von Komplexen, die aus gleichen Salzen einer niedrig- und einer mittelmolekularen
Säure bestehen, die aber bezüglich des Molverhältnisses der niedrig- zu der mittehnolekularen Säure
voneinander abweichen, zeigen Differenzen, die mehr auf verschiedene chemische Verbindungen als auf physikalische
Gemische der gleichen chemischen Verbindungen hinweisen. Die Temperaturen, bei denen das Gemisch

Mehrere Mineralölschmierfette (A bis E) von der in Tabelle II aufgezeigten Zusammensetzung wurden im
wesentlichen nach den Angaben von Beispiel 1 hergestellt.
Die Fette C und D wurden nach der bevorzugten Ausführungsform der Erfindung hergestellt,, die Fette A und
E dienten als Vergleichsobjekte.
Fett F wurde für Vergleichszwecke in der Weise hergestellt, daß ein Gemisch aus hydriertem Ricinusöl,
Hydrofölsäure (hydrierte Fischölsäuren), Kalkhydrat
und dem gesamten Mineralschmieröl in einen mit Rührwerk ausgestattetem Kessel auf etwa 540C erwärmt
wurde; nach Zusatz der Essigsäure wurde bis auf 2605C weitererhitzt, die Wärmezufuhr sodann unterbrochen
und das Fett auf 930C unter Rühren gekühlt und sodann
bei hoher Schergeschwindigkeit in einer Gaulin-Mühle homogenisiert.

Diese Komplexverbindungen enthalten neben Essigsäure eine oder mehrere mittelmolekulare Säuren. Die
mittlere Verseifungszahl der Säuren, ohne Einschluß von Essigsäure, von etwa 320 bis 420 ergab Fette (B bis D)
mit hervorragenden Hochdruck-, Verdiclcungs- und Beständigkeitseigenschaften. C und D zeigten die geringste
Penetrationsänderung beim Walken. Essigsäure und Stearinsäure (Fett E) mit hohem Molverhältnis lieferten
zwar stark metallhaltige Fette mit langer Schmierdauer, aber schlechtem Hochdruckverhalten. Essigsäure und
Capronsäure mit nur 6 C-Atomen im Molekül (Fett A) zeigt gutes Hochdruckverhalten, aber praktisch keine
Fettstruktur.
Mehrere Mineralschmierölfette, die mit Calciumsalzkomplexen von Essigsäure und einem handelsüblichen
Caprylsäuregemisch gedickt waren und die in Tabelle III aufgezeigte Zusammensetzung haben, wurden
im wesentlichen nach den Angaben von Beispiel 1 ίο hergestellt. Zusammensetzung und Eigenschaften dieser
Fette sind in Tabelle III dargestellt.

Tabelle III zeigt, daß Schmierfette, die mit den SaIzkomplexverdickern
der Erfindung zusammengesetzt sind, ausgezeichnete Ausbeute mit guter Strukturbeständigkeit
und mechanischem Verhalten besitzen, wenn die Seife unmittelbar in Mineralschmierölen von nicht mehr als
etwa 600 SUS bei 37;8°C dispergiert wird. Nach Möglichkeit
benutzt man daher solche Öle. Häufig werden aber höherviskose öle von etwa 700 bis 5000 SUS bei 37,8° C
zum Schmieren in der Industrie verlangt, namentlich beim Auftreten hoher Belastungen in Walzenlagern. Die
Dispergierung der Salzkomplexe in diesen höherviskosen Ölen kann eine niedrigere Ausbeute sowie eine geringere
Strukturbeständigkeit ergeben (Fett N). Erhöhung des Gehaltes an Salzkomplex bei Verwendung der höherviskosen
Öle verbessert die Penetration, dieses Vorgehen ist aber weniger wirtschaftlich (Fett P). Wenn die Öle
mit hohem Komplexgehalt verdünnt werden, bilden sie sehr weiche Produkte, verglichen mit den Produkten
geringerer Viskosität bei gleichem Komplexgehalt (Fett Q). Nach Tabelle IV kann man gute Ausbeute neben hoher
Strukturbeständigkeit erhalten, wenn man das Schmierfett in einem niedrigerviskosen Mineralöl herstellt und
dann mit höherviskosem Mineralöl verschneidet, um ein Fett von der erwünschten Viskosität zu erhalten (Fett O).

Andere Erdalkalimetalle als Calcium können den Metallbestandteil der Salzkomplexe bilden. Diese Ausführungsform
mit Komplexen aus Barium- oder gemischtem Barium-Cakium-Salz verleihen dem Fett ausgezeichnete
Schmiereigenschaften, namentlich hervorragendes Hochdruckverhalten.
Zur Verseifung der vereinigten nieder- und mittelmolekularen Säuren mit Bariumhydroxvd, namentlich
Bariumoctahydrat, wird die Base in großen Mengen benötigt. Der Bedarf an Bariumoctahydrat läßt sich
wesentlich herabsetzen, wenn man einen Teil der niedermolekularen Säure, und zwar nicht mehr als 60°/0,
vorzugsweise etwa 30 bis 50°, 0, in Form des vorgebildeten
Bariumsalzes benutzt. Die Restsäure wird in situ neutralisiert. Diese Ausführungsform wird bei der folgenden
Darstellung der Fettbereitung weiter erläutert.
Schmierfett Nr. 6 (Tabelle V) wurde folgendermaßen bereitet: Das gesamte Mineralöl und Bariümacetat
wurden in einem feuerbeheizten Kessel mit in siedendem Wasser gelöstem Bariumhydroxvd versetzt. Essigsäure
und Handelscaprylsäure wurden in das Gemisch eingeführt, das unter Rühren erhitzt wurde, bis das gesamte
Wasser ausgetrieben war. Die Mischung wurde rasch auf
265° C erwärmt, dann unter Rühren auf 1350C abgekühlt,
mit Phenyl-a-naphthylamin als Antioxydationsmittel
versetzt, auf 93° C gekühlt und in einer GauHn-Mühle bei
at homogenisiert.
Schmierfett Nr. 7 wurde wie Fett Nr. 6 hergestellt, mit der Abweichung, daß etwa 50°/0 der niedermolekularen
Säure als vorgebildetes Bariumacetat in Form trockener Kristalle an Stelle der Lösung aus Ba(OH)2 · 8H2O
benutzt wurden.
Schmierfett Nr. 8 wurde wie Fett Nr. 6 hergestellt, jedoch wurde Bariumhydroxyd durch Kalkhydrat ersetzt.

Der Fettverdicker aus dem Salzkomplex einer mittelmolekularen und einer niedermolekularen Säure zeigt
weiterhin den Vorteil, daß er augenscheinlich eine Verhärtung und Krustenbildung des fertigen Fettes verhindert.
Diese Erscheinung bringt Tabelle VI zum Ausdruck.
Fett T wurde nach den Angaben von Beispiel 1 hergestellt.
Fett U wurde wie Fett T hergestellt, jedoch wurde Handelsstearinsäure an Stelle der mittelmolekularen
Säure (Caprylsäure) verwendet.
Die folgenden Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung für wasserfreie Gemische.

Calciumacetat und Calciumcaprylat waren in dem Gemisch im Molverhältnis 5,7 :1 enthalten; das Gemisch
war nach dem Erwärmen auf 1600C wasserfrei. Die Eigenschaften des fertigen Fettes zeigt Tabelle VIII.

Das gesamte Mineralschmieröl nebst Kalkhydrat wurde in einem mit einem Rührwerk ausgestatteten Reaktionskessel zu einer glatten Aufschlämmung bei etwa 211C
vermischt und mit einem Gemisch aus Es,sig- und Caprylsäure \rersetzt. Die Reaktion setzte sogleich unter
Temperatursteigerung auf etwa 88° C und Bildung eines festen Produktes ein. Die Masse wurde unter Rühren in
etwa 2 Stunden auf 37.8X abgekühlt.

Das Schmiermittel wurde durch Verschneiden von °'o des Fettes A mit 80°;0 eines Mineralschmieröls von
der Viskosität 80 SUS bei 98,90C, d. h. dem Mineralölgrundstoff
von Fett A, verschnitten.

Die Herstellung erfolgte nach den Angaben für Fett A, ίο jedoch wurde als Säure nur Eisessig benutzt.
