Description
The invention relates to a light-emitting diode module which has at least two separately controllable light-emitting diode areas and in which the light-emitting layer is designed as an organic layer.
Organic light-emitting diodes (hereinafter also referred to as OLEDs) are thin-film components that are made up of a large number of individual layers. Due to the high sensitivity of the organic materials to water and oxygen, it is necessary to encapsulate the layer stack in order to protect it from external influences. In the case of rigid modules, this encapsulation is usually implemented using cavity glass and in the case of flexible modules with barrier films. Depending on the application, an OLED can be designed to be bottom, top or transparent emitting. In the former, the encapsulation can be made non-transparent, the encapsulation also having to be transparent in the case of top-emitting and transparent modules.

In the case of bottom-emitting OLED modules with large luminous areas in particular, in which the light radiation of an OLED passes through a transparent substrate, the limited conductivity of the base electrode due to the formation of this layer as a transparent layer leads to an intrinsic voltage drop with increasing distance from and from the electrode connection resulting in an inhomogeneous luminance distribution. The conductivity of the anode can be supported by additional bus and grid structures by distributing the current over more conductive metal tracks. The conductivity of the metal track depends on its cross-sectional size. However, interconnects with a thickness in the micrometer range are problematic if they are built up directly on the substrate. On the one hand, the corresponding manufacturing processes, such as sputtering or evaporation, are tedious and therefore cost-intensive. On the other hand, roughness, which is not a problem with micrometer-thick layers, can lead to serious problems in the form of short circuits for OLED layers that are only a few nanometers thick.
End users are often faced with the challenge of integrating OLED modules into their products. Standardized and standardized connection contacts represent a simple and inexpensive option for this purpose. In the prior art, however, mostly only non-standardized connection points are provided on the OLED substrate. These connection points mostly consist of nanometer-thin sputtered metal layers, which are very sensitive to mechanical stress. In addition, mechanical stress often occurs in the area These connection points result in damage to the barrier layers lying under the metal layers, which tends to break due to their brittle nature and can thus also lead to breaks and interruptions in the electrodes.
The invention is therefore based on the technical problem of creating an organic light-emitting diode module by means of which the disadvantages from the prior art can be overcome. In particular, the light-emitting diode module according to the invention should be flexible and have a large luminous area in relation to the non-active area and, viewed across the luminous area, a uniform luminous intensity, in particular at high brightness. Furthermore, the light-emitting diode module according to the invention should, if possible, have a standard interface for connecting peripheral components.
The solution to the technical problem results from subjects having the features of
An organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention belongs to the type of light-emitting diode modules in which the emitted light is emitted primarily or exclusively through a substrate. A transparent substrate therefore forms the basis for an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention, which is referred to below as the base substrate. The transparent base substrate can be, for example, a glass or a plastic substrate. In one embodiment, the transparent base substrate is flexible.
On the transparent base substrate of an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention there is a stack of layers arranged one above the other, as is also known from the prior art for organic light-emitting diodes. Starting from the transparent base substrate, this layer stack comprises at least the following layers in the following order: a first electrically conductive layer, which is also transparent; at least one organic layer emitting light radiation; a second electrically conductive layer and an encapsulation element.
It is known that a flat organic light-emitting diode can only emit light in those surface sections in which both the first electrically conductive layer, the at least one organic layer and the second electrically conductive layer are formed.
In an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention, at least the transparent first electrically conductive layer is divided into at least two partial areas that are electrically isolated from one another. A completed light-emitting diode module according to the invention thus comprises at least two light-emitting areas, each light-emitting area being controllable separately.
For this purpose, in an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention, each partial area of the first electrically conductive layer is subdivided into at least one contact area and at least one luminous area, which are arranged next to one another. A respective luminous area defines a surface section from which light radiation is emitted in a finished light-emitting diode module, whereas the contact area of a partial area of the first electrically conductive layer is only used to form electrically conductive connections to superordinate layers, which will be discussed below. It should be noted that the sub-division of a partial area into contact area and luminous area only serves to designate surface sections and that there is no interruption of the layer material at the boundary between contact area and luminous area. The contact areas of all partial areas of a light-emitting diode module according to the invention are preferably formed only on one side of the light-emitting diode module.
At least one light radiation-emitting organic layer is deposited on the first electrically conductive layer, the layer material of the at least one light radiation-emitting layer not covering the contact areas of the first electrically conductive layer after completion. This can be realized in that the layer material of the at least one organic layer is deposited, for example through a mask device, in such a way that the contact areas of the first electrically conductive layer are not covered with layer material or the layer material of the at least one organic layer is completely on the first deposited electrically conductive layer and then removed with known process steps from the contact areas of the first electrically conductive layer.
It is known that the at least one organic and light-emitting layer in an organic light-emitting diode can consist of a stack of layers of different organic materials. The at least one organic layer in an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention can thus also consist of such a layer stack of different partial layers. The following are just a few examples of these sub-layers, which such a layer stack can comprise, with their English-language technical terms and associated abbreviations in brackets, without claiming to be exhaustive: Hole Injection Layer (HIL), Hole Transport Layer (HTL), Electron Blocking Layer , EBL), Emission Layer (EML), Hole Blocking Layer (HBL), Electron Transport Layer (ETL). It is also possible for the at least one light radiation-emitting layer to comprise a layer made of a perovskite semiconductor material.
In a further embodiment, a first layer material for the at least one organic layer is deposited on the luminous area of a first partial area of the first electrically conductive layer and a second layer material for the at least one organic layer is deposited on the luminous area of a second partial area of the first electrically conductive layer in such a way that in the completed light-emitting diode module, light radiation is emitted in a first wavelength range from the luminous area of the first partial area and light radiation in a second wavelength range is emitted from the luminous area of the second partial area. The different layer materials for the at least one organic layer can be deposited, for example, through mask devices in order to coat the corresponding surface sections.
Next, in a light-emitting diode module according to the invention, a second electrically conductive layer is deposited, again making sure that the contact areas of the partial areas of the first electrically conductive layer are not covered with the layer material of the second electrically conductive layer. A contact area should also not be partially covered with layer material. The two procedures described above for the deposition of the at least one organic layer can also be used for this, for example.
The layer stack described so far, comprising a base substrate, a first electrically conductive layer, at least one organic layer and a second electrically conductive layer, which is also referred to below as an OLED layer stack and which is also known from the prior art for an organic light-emitting diode Layers, such as adhesion promoter layers or barrier layers, for example, are subsequently covered with an encapsulation element.
According to the invention, the encapsulation element comprises a flexible plastic substrate. On the side of the flexible plastic substrate which faces the second electrically conductive layer and which is referred to below as the underside of the flexible plastic substrate, a metal layer is deposited which extends over the area of the luminous areas of the partial areas of the first electrically conductive layer and which extends over the entire layer area of the OLED layer stack is designed as a completely closed layer. The metal layer is thus not divided into subregions which are spaced apart from one another or at least electrically isolated from one another. This metal layer, with a layer thickness of preferably 10 µm to 50 µm, causes an even distribution of the heat generated during light generation in a finished light-emitting diode module and thus avoids brightness differences over the luminous surfaces caused by thermal differences. Materials with good thermal conductivity are therefore suitable for such a layer. The metal layer can, for example, comprise at least one of the chemical elements from the group consisting of copper, aluminum, gold and silver, which are characterized by good thermal conductivity.
On the other side of the flexible plastic substrate, which is also referred to below as the top side of the flexible plastic substrate and consequently also as the top side of the encapsulation element, electrically conductive conductor tracks are formed.
The finished encapsulation element with the metal layer on the underside and the electrically conductive interconnects on the top is attached to the layer stack comprising the base substrate, the first electrically conductive layer, the at least one organic layer and the second electrically conductive layer, preferably by means of an adhesive . After the encapsulation element has been attached to the OLED layer stack by means of an adhesive, the metal layer of the encapsulation element is thus glued to the second electrically conductive layer of the OLED layer stack without cavities being formed between the metal layer and the second electrically conductive layer. In the case of an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention, a completely closed adhesive layer is thus formed between the encapsulation element and the OLED layer stack, which is preferably made as thin as possible and has a high thermal conductivity. Subsequently, at least one electrically conductive connection to an interconnect is formed on the upper side of the encapsulation element from each contact area of the partial areas of the first electrically conductive layer. This can be implemented, for example, by placing an interconnect in the area in which an electrical conductive connection is to be made with a contact area of the first electrically conductive layer, opens into a through-hole, which establishes an electrically conductive connection from the top of the encapsulation element to the underside of the encapsulation element. Such a plated through hole can be designed, for example, as an annular plated through hole that is open in the interior of the ring.
In this way, in an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention, electrically conductive connections are produced from the contact areas of the partial areas of the first electrical layer via the vias and guide rails of the encapsulation element to a contact element on an edge of the light-emitting diode module, via which the light-emitting areas of the light-emitting module can be controlled. The interconnection of the luminous areas is thus shifted into the encapsulation module and no longer has to be carried out in the planes of the layer stack of a light-emitting diode. Furthermore, in a light-emitting diode module according to the invention, at least one electrically conductive connection from the second electrically conductive layer to an interconnect on the top of the encapsulation element is also formed.
The encapsulation element of an organic light-emitting diode module according to the invention thus simultaneously functions as a flexible printed circuit board. In this way, compared to the prior art, less inactive area is required for interconnecting the light-emitting areas in relation to the total area of a light-emitting diode module.
