Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及一种包括等离子体显示板(plasma display panel,PDP)的等离子体显示设备及其驱动方法。
背景技术
PDP是使用通过气体放电所产生的等离子体来显示字符或图像的平板显示器。根据其尺寸,它包括超过几十个到数百万个(several scores to millions)以矩阵模式排列的像素。
一般,在等离子体显示设备的驱动方法中,一帧被划分为多个子场,并且子场被时分(time division)控制,从而代表灰度级。每一个子场包括复位周期、寻址周期和持续放电周期(sustain discharge period)。复位周期是用于初始化每一个放电单元的状态,以便利对该放电单元的寻址操作。寻址周期是用于选择接通/关断单元,为了显示预期的图像,这些接通/关断单元必须被接通或者关断,并且,寻址周期还用于在被寻址(addressed)为要被接通的接通单元上积累壁电荷。持续周期是用于引起这些单元持续放电以便在被寻址的单元上显示图像,或者保持不活动(inactive)。
当在各个周期内执行各个操作(复位、寻址、持续操作)时,在板上存在电容,因为在扫描电极和持续电极之间的放电空间,以及在其上形成寻址电极(address electrode)的表面和其上形成扫描和持续电极的表面之间的放电空间起到电容性负载的作用(此后被称作“板电容器”(panel capacitor))。因此,考虑到电容,除了用于施加寻址波形的功率以外,还需要用于产生预定电压的无功功率(reactive power)。因此,寻址驱动集成电路包括用于回收(recover)无功功率并重新使用的功率回收电路,如L.E.Weber在4,866,349和5,081,400号美国专利中所公开的功率回收电路那样。
但是,当功率回收电路在寻址周期内被用来将寻址电压Va施加到寻址电极时,板电容电压达到电压Va的时间被延迟,并且,与将寻址电压Va直接施加到寻址电极的情况比较,保持电压Va的时间较短。因此,不仅寻址放电被延迟了,而且光波形也被降低了。
在图1A和图1B中,在寻址周期中,当功率回收电路被用来将寻址电压Va施加到寻址电极时和寻址电压Va被直接施加到寻址电极时,在各个情况下各个光波形La1和La2的幅值被示出。从图1A中可以看出,当使用功率回收电路时,寻址放电被延迟到时刻t1,并且光波形也被降低到La1。
因此,使用功率回收电路是有问题的,其导致在寻址周期中的很高概率的寻址放电错误(address discharge error)。
此外,在寻址周期之前,通过施加等离子体显示设备的驱动波形而形成的壁电荷分布,根据PDP的温度变化。更具体地说,当PDP的温度高于或低于参考温度范围时,寻址周期中不点火(misfire)的概率变得非常高,因为在等离子体状态下的壁电荷不稳定。
发明内容
根据本发明,提供了一种等离子体显示设备,它具有当等离子体显示板的温度在预定温度范围之外时,防止在寻址和持续周期内的不点火的优点。
本发明还提供了一种包括功率回收电路的等离子体显示设备的驱动方法,该功率回收电路用于通过使用电耦合(electrically coupled)到第三电极的电感(inductor)和由第一及第二电极与第三电极所形成的电容性负载(电容器)之间的谐振(resonance),将寻址电压施加到第三电极,所述第三电极被沿着与第一和第二电极交叉(crossing)的方向排列。
根据一种示范性驱动方法,PDP的温度被感知(sense)。参考所感知的温度来确定是否执行寻址功率回收。复位波形被施加到第一电极。把复位波形施加到第一电极以后,在参考所确定的有关是否执行寻址功率回收的结果,产生寻址电压之后,将寻址电压施加到第三电极上。

参考图2,PDP具有m×n的矩阵结构,其中,寻址电极A1到Am按行排列,n个扫描电极Y1到Yn和n个持续电极X1到Xn按列交替排列。
现在参考图3,根据本发明的示范性实施例的等离子体显示设备包括PDP100、寻址驱动器200、扫描驱动器300、持续驱动器400、板温度传感器500,和控制器600。
PDP 100包括多个按行排列的寻址电极A1到Am、按列排列的扫描电极Y1到Yn和持续电极X1到Xn。

现在参考图4,图4示出了根据本发明的示范性实施例的寻址驱动电路的图。N沟道(channel)晶体管被用作开关。具有体二极管的场效应晶体管(FET)或用于执行类似功能的另一个开关可以被用作开关。
为了描述的方便,由寻址电极A(address A)和扫描电极Y或由寻址电极A和持续电极X形成的电容被示作板电容器Cp。
如图4中所示,根据本发明的示范性实施例的寻址驱动器200的驱动电路包括功率回收电路710、寻址电压供应器720和寻址选择电路730。

在复位周期结束之后,用于功率回收的电容器Ca被用电压Va/2进行充电,电压Va/2是外部电压的一半,以便防止开始寻址放电时的涌入电流(inrushcurrent)。在这种状态中,当开关Ar和寻址选择电路的驱动开关AH被接通时,工作模式1开始。
在工作模式1中,电感-电容器(LC,inductor-capacitor)谐振电路由通过用于功率回收的电容器Ca、开关Ar、二极管D1、电感L、驱动开关AH和板电容器Cp的路径形成,因此电流流到电感L,并且板上的输出电压被提高。
在工作模式2中,由于开关Aa被接通,并且开关Ar被关断,从外部施加的电压Va通过开关Aa直接地流到板电容器Cp。因此,板的输出电压保持在电压Va。
在用于接通开关Af并关断开关Aa的工作模式3中,由于LC谐振电路是由通过板电容器Cp、驱动电路AH、电感L、二极管D2、开关Af和用于功率回收的电容器Ca的路径形成的,所以电流流到电感L,并且板的输出电压被减小。
然后,在工作模式4中,板的输出电压被维持在0伏,因为开关Ag被接通而开关Af被关断。当开关Ar在工作模式4中被接通时,工作模式1开始,并且上面的工作被重复。
现在将参考附图描述根据本发明的示范性实施例的等离子体显示设备的驱动波形。
壁电荷以等离子体状态存在,并且,根据PDP的温度,壁电荷的运动变得活跃(active)或者微弱(weak)。例如,由于当PDP 100的温度在预定的温度范围内时,壁电荷的运动是正常的,复位周期结束以后,在寻址周期中,适量的用于寻址放电的壁电荷被积累。但是,当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时,壁电荷的运动不活跃,所以壁电荷未被适当地积累到每一个电极。因此,放电质量变得恶化,并且,更具体地说,如果在用于初始化所有放电单元并建立起(set up)壁电荷,以便在寻址周期中执行稳定的寻址放电的复位周期结束之后,壁电荷未被适当地积累到每一个电极,则由于恶化的放电质量所致,在随后的寻址周期中可能发生不点火。
现在将参考附图描述用于解决上面的问题的本发明的第一个示范性实施例。
图5A和图5B示出了代表根据本发明的第一个示范性实施例的等离子体显示设备的驱动波形的图。图5A示出了代表当PDP 100的温度在预定的温度范围内时的驱动波形的图。
如图5A所示,在根据本发明的示范性实施例的等离子体显示设备的驱动方法中,每一个子场包括复位周期、寻址周期和持续周期。
复位周期用于初始化每一个放电单元的状态,以便便利对放电单元的寻址操作,而寻址周期用于选择接通/关断单元,为了显示预期的图像,这些接通/关断单元必须被接通或者关断,并且寻址周期用于在被寻址为要被接通的接通单元上积累壁电荷。持续周期用于引起这些单元持续放电以便在被寻址的单元上显示图像,或者保持不活动。
在复位周期中,由于所有的放电单元被上升斜坡电压放电,所以大量的负的壁电荷被积累在扫描电极Y上,并且大量的正的壁电荷被积累在寻址电极A上。
即,通过在复位周期的上升周期中把逐渐升高的电压施加到扫描电极,所有的放电单元被放电,并且,通过在复位周期的下降周期中施加逐渐降低到负电压Vnf的电压,同时持续电极X被偏置在预定电压,壁电荷被消除,因此,壁电荷被初始化,以适于在随后的寻址周期中的寻址操作。即,负的壁电荷和正的壁电荷被分别地和充分地积累在扫描电极Y和寻址电极A上。
寻址周期用于选择接通/关断单元,为了显示预期的图像,这些接通/关断单元必须被接通或者关断,并且寻址周期用于在被寻址为要被接通的接通单元上积累壁电荷。在寻址周期中,当扫描电极被顺序地扫描时(当低于偏置电压VscH的电压VscL被施加到扫描电极Y时),为了选择接通单元,正的寻址电压Va被施加到寻址电极A。然后,在扫描电极Y和持续电极X之间形成了壁电荷,因为寻址放电是由被壁电荷与寻址电压Va和电压VscL之间的差值所导致的壁电压产生的(这里,壁电荷指示在寻址电极A和扫描电极Y之间形成的壁电荷,差值指示被施加到寻址电极A的寻址电压Va和被施加到扫描电极Y的电压VscL之间的差值)。
当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围内时,寻址电压Va通过功率回收电路的电感-电容器(LC)谐振被施加到寻址电极。然后,寻址放电在寻址周期之前通过分别积累到扫描电极Y和寻址电极A的负的壁电荷和正的壁电荷而稳定地产生。
接着,持续周期用于使得这些单元持续放电以便在被寻址的单元上显示图像,或者保持不活动。由于交替地具有电压Vs或者0伏的持续放电脉冲被交替地施加到扫描电极Y和持续电极X,所以在寻址周期中选择的接通单元中产生了持续放电。
图5B示出了代表当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围以外时的驱动波形的图。
当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围以外时使用的图5B中所示的驱动波形与当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围以内时使用的图5A中所示的驱动波形不同。
如图5B中所示,当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围以外时,在复位周期结束之后,在各个电极上还没有积累起适量的正的壁电荷。但是,此时如果通过使用功率回收电路来施加如图5A中所示的寻址电压Va,则寻址放电质量变得差得多。因此,当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时,根据本发明的第一个示范性实施例,通过在寻址周期内对寻址电极A执行硬切换操作来施加寻址电压Va,则随后的寻址放电可以被很容易地产生。
如所描述的那样,根据本发明的第一个示范性实施例,功耗可以被降低,因为当板的温度在预定温度范围内时,通过使用寻址功率回收电路来产生寻址电压,并且,可以防止寻址放电错误,因为当板的温度不在预定温度范围内时,寻址电压被直接产生而不使用功率回收电路。
即,根据本发明的第一个实施例,在寻址周期中,功耗可以被降低,并且寻址操作可以被稳定地执行。
通过实验可以很容易地确定用于稳定地执行PDP 100的寻址放电的预定温度。
此外,在持续周期中,一般使用功率回收电路来把持续放电脉冲施加到扫描电极Y和持续电极X。
现在将参考图6描述持续驱动器300中的持续电极X驱动电路。
图6示出了代表根据本发明的示范性实施例的持续电极驱动电路的图。持续电极驱动电路的开关的结构和特性与图4中所示的寻址驱动器200的驱动电路的开关的结构和特性类似,因此将省略进一步的详细描述。
如图6中所示,根据本发明的示范性实施例的持续驱动器300的驱动电路包括功率回收电路810和持续驱动单元820。
功率回收电路810包括电容器Ca、开关Xr和Xf、二极管D1和D2,以及电感L。在电容器Ca充有Vs/2的电压。用于功率回收的电容器Ca电耦合在开关Xr的漏极和开关Xf的源极之间,并且二极管D1和D2分别与开关Xr和Xf串联耦合。电感L的端子电耦合在二极管D1和D2之间的节点以及寻址电压供应器720的开关Aa和Ag之间的节点之间,而板电容器Cp与电感L的另一端子串联耦合。如果开关Xr具有体二极管,二极管D1用于设置用于提高在板电容器处的电压的路径。如果开关Xf具有体二极管,二极管D2用于设置用于降低在板电容器Cp处的电压的路径。如果开关Xr和Xf没有体二极管,则可以除去二极管D1和D2。上面结构的功率回收电路用于把在板电容器Cp处的电压(即,在持续电极处的电压)充电到电压Vs,或者用于把在板电容器Cp处的电压放电到0伏。
持续驱动单元820被耦合在功率回收电路810和板电容器Cp之间,并且包括两个开关Xa和Xg。开关Xa被耦合在用于供应持续电压Vs的电源和板电容器Cp之间,而开关Xg被耦合在用于供应接地电压的电源和板电容器Cp之间。开关Xa和Xg分别给板电容器Cp供应电压Vs和0伏。
图6中所示的功率回收电路的结构和操作与图4中所示的寻址驱动电路的功率回收电路的结构和操作类似,因此将省略进一步的描述。
此外,虽然在图6中已经以持续驱动器200的驱动电路作为例子,但是持续驱动器200中驱动电路的功率回收电路具有与扫描驱动器500的功率回收电路相同的结构,因此,将省略进一步的说明。
与没有如图7中所示的功率回收电路的LC谐振而施加持续放电脉冲电压的情况相比,具有能量回收的优点,因为当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时壁电荷状态不稳定。但是,不点火非常可能发生,因为光强度Ls2小于光强度Ls1(Ls2<Ls1),并且板电容器的电压到达电压Vs被延迟了时间Δt,所以在持续周期中持续放电没有被稳定地执行。
因此,将参考附图,描述根据本发明的第二个示范性实施例的解决上面问题的方法。
图8示出了代表根据本发明的第二个示范性实施例的等离子体显示设备的驱动波形的图。更具体地说,它示出了当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时(例如,温度高于预定温度范围或者低于预定温度范围)所形成的驱动波形。
如图8中所示,当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时,形成为等离子体的壁电荷的运动不稳定。由于在持续周期中,利用功率回收电路的LC谐振来施加持续放电脉冲电压时,持续放电质量变得差得多,所以不点火的概率提高了。
因此,当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时,在各个子场中把持续周期划分为至少两组SG1、SG2之后,施加持续放电脉冲。
即,在持续周期的第一组SG1中,通过硬切换操作施加持续放电脉冲电压,并且在持续周期的第二组SG2中,利用功率回收电路的LC谐振来施加持续放电脉冲电压。
因此,虽然当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时,壁电荷状态不稳定,但是通过利用在一部分持续周期中的高光强以硬切换操作来施加持续放电脉冲电压Vs,提供了用于稳定持续放电的周期。在稳定了持续放电之后,通过利用功率回收电路的LC谐振来施加持续放电脉冲电压Vs,可以执行功率回收。
因此,当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时,可以防止在子场的持续周期中的不点火。
虽然已经根据本发明的第一和第二示范性实施例,在寻址周期和持续周期中单独地描述了用于防止当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时引起的不点火的方法,但是根据本发明的另一个示范性实施例,该方法可以被同时应用于寻址周期和持续周期。
如上所述,根据本发明的示范性实施例,当PDP 100的温度在预定温度范围之外时,特别是当PDP的温度远远地(substantially)高于或低于预定温度范围时,通过在一部分寻址周期或持续周期中利用高光强执行硬切换操作而不使用功率回收电路,可以防止在寻址周期或持续周期中的不点火。
虽然已经结合目前被认为实用的示范性实施例描述了本发明,但是应该理解,本发明不局限于所公开的实施例,相反,本发明期望覆盖所附权利要求的精神和范围所包括的各种修改和等同装置。
Claims (8)
1.一种具有功率回收电路的等离子体显示设备的驱动方法,该功率回收电路用于通过使用电耦合到第三电极的电感和由第一及第二电极与第三电极所形成的电容性负载之间的谐振,将寻址电压施加到第三电极,所述第三电极被沿着与第一和第二电极交叉的方向排列,该驱动方法包含:
感知等离子体显示板的温度;
根据所感知的温度,确定是否执行寻址功率回收;
将复位波形施加到第一电极;和
在把复位波形施加到第一电极以后,根据所确定的是否执行寻址功率回收的结果产生寻址电压之后,将寻址电压施加到相关联的第三电极。
2.如权利要求1所述的驱动方法,其中,当确定是否执行寻址功率回收时,如果等离子体显示板的温度在预定温度范围之外,则利用功率回收电路的电感-电容器谐振,将寻址电压施加到第三电极。
3.如权利要求1所述的驱动方法,其中,当确定是否执行寻址功率回收时,如果等离子体显示板的温度在预定温度范围之内,则不用功率回收电路的电感-电容器谐振,而将寻址电压施加到第三电极。
4.一种具有功率回收电路的等离子体显示设备的驱动方法,该功率回收电路用于通过使用电耦合到第三电极的电感和由第一及第二电极与第三电极所形成的电容性负载之间的谐振,将持续脉冲电压施加到第一电极和第二电极,所述第三电极被沿着与第一电极和第二电极交叉的方向排列,该驱动方法包含:
感知等离子体显示板的温度;
根据所感知的温度,确定是否执行寻址功率回收;
将复位波形施加到第一电极;
在把复位波形施加到第一电极之后,当通过把第一电压施加到第一电极执行扫描操作时,通过将第二电压施加到第三电极执行寻址操作,以便在放电单元中选择要被显示的放电单元;和
在执行寻址操作以后,根据所确定的是否执行寻址功率回收的结果产生持续放电脉冲电压之后,将持续放电脉冲电压交替地施加到第一电极和第二电极。
5.如权利要求4所述的驱动方法,其中,当等离子体显示板的温度在预定温度范围之外时,在确定是否执行寻址功率回收时:
在至少两组持续周期中的第一组持续周期中,不用功率回收电路的电感-电容器谐振,将持续放电脉冲电压交替地施加到第一电极和第二电极,并且,
在第一组持续周期之后的第二组持续周期中,通过功率回收电路的电感-电容器谐振,将持续放电脉冲电压交替地施加到第一电极和第二电极。
6.一种包括功率回收电路的等离子体显示设备,该功率回收电路用于通过使用电耦合到第三电极的电感和由第一及第二电极与第三电极所形成的电容性负载之间的谐振,将寻址电压施加到第三电极,并将持续脉冲电压施加到第一电极和第二电极,该等离子体显示设备包含:
等离子体显示板,它包括第一电极和第二电极,和在沿着与第一电极和第二电极交叉的方向上形成的第三电极,以及在第一、第二和第三电极的交叉部分上形成的放电单元;
板温度传感器,用于感知等离子体显示板的温度;和
驱动电路,针对从一帧划分出的多个子场工作,每一个子场包括持续、复位和寻址周期,
其中,该驱动电路适于在初始化所有放电单元之后,通过下列步骤执行寻址操作:
将复位波形施加到第一电极,
将寻址电压施加到第三电极,以便在放电单元中选择要被显示的放电单元,
将持续放电脉冲电压交替地施加到第一电极和第二电极,以便在所选择的放电单元中产生持续放电,和
根据等离子体显示板的温度,确定在寻址和持续周期中是否执行功率回收操作。
7.如权利要求6所述的等离子体显示设备,其中,不用功率回收电路的电感-电容器谐振,将寻址电压施加到第三电极,以便当等离子体显示板的温度在预定温度范围之外时,在寻址周期中在放电单元中选择要被显示的放电单元。
8.如权利要求6所述的等离子体显示设备,其中,当等离子体显示板的温度在预定温度范围之外时:
不用功率回收电路的电感-电容器谐振,在第一组持续周期中将持续放电脉冲电压施加到第一电极和第二电极,持续周期被划分为至少两组;和
在第一组持续周期之后的第二组中,通过功率回收电路的电感-电容器谐振,将持续放电脉冲电压施加到第一电极和第二电极。
