Abstract

本发明提供一种主动矩阵型显示装置及其驱动方法,其目的在于抑制残像现象,并谋求显示质量的提升。其中,在回扫期间,通过电位切换电路(103)把保持电容线(217)的电位从第1电位V1(例如接地电位)切换为第2电位V2(例如正电源电位PVdd的电位)。此时,通过保持电容(218)的电容耦合效果,使驱动用TFT(214)的栅极电位上升。由此,驱动用TFT(214)的栅极电位比其源极电位高。在此,当通过前一次显示信号D的写入使空穴被收集在驱动用TFT(214)的栅极绝缘膜时,空穴会从栅极绝缘膜被抽出至源极或漏极。因此,驱动用TFT(214)的电气特性被初期化。且在回扫期间结束之前,通过电位切换电路(103),把所述保持电容线(217)的电位从第2电位V2切换至第1电位V1。

Description

主动矩阵型显示装置及其驱动方法
技术领域
本发明涉及一种主动矩阵型显示装置及其驱动方法。
背景技术
近年来,开发一种使用有机电激发光设备(Organic ElectroLuminescence Device:以下称为“有机EL元件”)的有机EL显示装置,作为取代阴极射线管(CRT)及液晶显示器(LCD)的显示装置。特别是,开发一种具备有薄膜晶体管(Thin Film Transistor:以下称为“TFT”)的主动矩阵型有机EL显示装置,作为用于驱动有机EL元件的开关元件。
以下,参照附图说明主动矩阵型有机EL显示装置,图3是有机EL显示装置的等效电路图。在图3中,仅显示以矩阵状配置在显示面板400的多个显示像素中的1个显示像素210。
延伸在行方向上的像素选择信号线211与延伸在列方向的显示信号线212的交差点,配置有N通道型的像素选择用TFT213。该像素选择用TFT213的栅极连接到像素选择信号线211,其漏极连接到显示信号线212。在像素选择信号线211上施加有从垂直驱动电路301输出的高电平像素选择信号G,由信号G使像素选择用TFT213导通。在显示信号线212处则从水平驱动电路302输出显示信号D。
像素选择用TFT213的源极连接到P通道型的驱动用TFT214的栅极。在驱动用TFT214的源极连接有供给正电源电位PVdd的电源线215。驱动用TFT214的漏极连接到有机EL元件216的阳极。在有机EL元件216的阴极供给有负电源电位CV。
而且,在像素选择用TFT213的栅极与保持电容线217之间连接有保持电容218。保持电容线217固定于一定的电位。保持电容218用于将经由像素选择用TFT213施加到像素选择信号线211的栅极的显示信号D在一水平期间予以保持。
接着,说明上述有机EL显示装置的动作。当将高电平的像素选择信号G在1水平期间施加到像素选择信号线211时,像素选择用TFT213会呈现导通状态。于是,显示信号线212所输出的显示信号D通过像素选择用TFT213,施加到驱动用TFT214的栅极,且由保持电容218进行保持。亦即,将显示信号D写入显示像素210。
然后,依据施加在驱动用TFT214栅极的显示信号D,驱动用TFT214的电导会产生变化,当驱动用TFT214呈导通状态时,对应该电导的电流会经由驱动用TFT214供给有机EL元件216,有机EL元件216以对应该电流的亮度点亮。另一方面,依据供给该栅极的显示信号D,当驱动用TFT214呈不导通状态时,由于电流在驱动用TFT214中不流通,因此有机EL元件216会熄灭。
在正程(图场)期间,通过对全部行的显示像素210进行所述动作,可在显示面板上整体显示所希望的图像。

发明内容
然而,在所述有机EL显示装置中,会在显示面板的一部分产生因有机EL元件216的发光而造成的残像情形,因而有显示质量劣化的问题。这是由于对于相同的显示像素,因前一次写入显示信号D时的驱动用TFT214的导通状态(ON状态或OFF状态),在这次写入时驱动用TFT214会流通与依据这次的显示信号D所希望的电流値不同的电流的缘故。亦即,在驱动用TFT214中流通的电流具有磁滞现象(hysteresis)。该现象在显示信号D为高电平与低电平的中间电平的信号时特别显着。
根据本发明者的研究,该磁滞现象是在写入前一次的显示信号D时,流通于驱动用TFT214中的载流子(空穴)被收集在该栅极绝缘膜中,所收集的载流子会使驱动用TFT214的临界値产生变动。
(解决课题的手段)
因此,本发明提供一种抑制上述显示面板的残像、且实现显示质量提升的主动矩阵型显示装置。
本发明的主动矩阵型显示装置具备配置成矩阵状的多个显示像素,而各显示像素具有:像素选择用晶体管,依据像素选择信号而导通;发光元件;驱动用晶体管,依据通过像素选择用晶体管所施加的显示信号来驱动发光元件;以及保持电容,连接到驱动用晶体管的栅极与保持电容线之间,且保持显示信号;而且具备电位切换电路,其在回扫期间中将保持电容线的电位从第1电位切换为与第1电位不同的第2电位,而将驱动用晶体管设为关断状态,且在回扫期间结束前,将保持电容线的电位从第2电位切换回复到第1电位。
根据这种构成,由于可将收集在驱动用晶体管的栅极绝缘膜中的载流子抽出至源极或漏极,因此在将显示信号写入显示像素之前,可使驱动用晶体管的电气特性(特别是临界値电压)回复到原来的状态。由此,对应于显示信号的适当电流値的电流会恒常流通在驱动用晶体管中,而可抑制显示面板的残像现象。
此外,本发明提供一种主动矩阵型显示装置的驱动方法,该主动矩阵型显示装置具备配置成矩阵状的多个显示像素,而各显示像素具有:像素选择用晶体管,依据像素选择信号而导通;发光元件;驱动用晶体管,依据通过像素选择用晶体管施加的显示信号驱动发光元件;以及保持电容,连接到驱动用晶体管的栅极与保持电容线之间,且保持显示信号;而该驱动方法是在回扫期间将所述保持电容线的电位从第1电位切换为与第1电位不同的第2电位,而将驱动用晶体管设为关断状态,且在回扫期间结束前,将保持电容线的电位从第2电位切换回复到第1电位,在回扫期间结束后的影像显示期间,依据像素选择信号并通过像素选择用晶体管将显示信号施加于驱动用晶体管。
(发明的效果)
根据本发明,在主动矩阵型显示装置中,可抑制显示面板的残像,且实现显示质量的提升。

接着,参照附图说明本发明实施例的有机EL显示装置及其驱动方法。图1是该有机EL显示装置的等效电路图。在图1中,在以矩阵状配置在显示面板400中的多个显示像素中,仅显示1个显示像素210。在图1中,与图3相同的构成部分被赋予相同的附图标记并省略其说明。
在该有机EL显示装置中,在显示面板400的垂直驱动电路301、水平驱动电路302及显示像素210的保持电容线217处,连接有显示面板400的控制电路的控制用LSI(大规模集成电路)100。
控制用LSI 100具备:用于产生垂直启始脉冲信号STV、垂直频率CKV、水平启始脉冲信号STH、水平频率CKH等驱动信号的驱动信号产生电路101;及以时间序列(time series)方式将对应于作为显示对象的画像的显示信号D予以输出的显示信号产生电路102。
此外,控制用LSI 100具备与保持电容线217相连接的电位切换电路103。该电位切换电路103在回扫期间(亦即消隐(blanking)期间),将保持电容线217的电位从第1电位V1切换为比第1电位V1更高的第2电位V2,而将所述驱动用晶体管214设为关断状态,且在回扫期间结束前,将保持电容线217的电位从第2电位V2切换回复到第1电位V1。
在此,虽是切换保持电容线217的电位,而将所述驱动用晶体管214设为关断状态,但该关断状态并非为完全关断状态,其是指依据施加在驱动用晶体管214上的电压而控制栅极的关断的状况,并非指完全的关断状态。
在本实施例中,第1电位V1最好为接地电位(即0V),第2电位V2最好为电源线215的正电源电位PVdd(例如约7至8V)。
接着,参照附图说明说明本发明实施例的有机EL显示装置的驱动方法。图2用于说明本发明实施例的有机EL显示装置的驱动方法的时序图。
如图2所示,电位切换电路103在影像显示期间中输出第1电位V1,但在回扫期间将第1电位V1切换为第2电位V2,而将保持电容线217的电位上升至第2电位V2。
于是,通过保持电容218的电容耦合效果,使驱动用TFT214的栅极电位依据电压变化量ΔV从第1电位V1上升至第2电位V2。因此,驱动用TFT214的栅极电位会比其源极电位高,且高于驱动用晶体管214的临界値,使驱动用晶体管214成为关断状态。此时,通过前一次显示信号D的写入使载流子(空穴)被收集在驱动用TFT214的栅极绝缘膜时,这些载流子(空穴)由于从栅极到源极或漏极的电场而成为隧道电流(tunnel current),并从栅极绝缘膜被抽出到源极或漏极。因此,驱动用TFT214的电气特性被初期化。
接着,在回扫期间结束前,电位切换电路103把保持电容线217的电位从第2电位V2切换回复到第1电位V1。由此,驱动用TFT214的栅极电位回复到原来状态,保持电容218也保持成原来显示信号D的状态。
然后,在回扫期间结束后,进入影像显示期间时,垂直启始脉冲信号STV会从控制用LSI 100的驱动信号产生电路101输出至垂直驱动电路301。于是,垂直启始脉冲信号STV因垂直驱动电路301与垂直频率CKV同步位移,并输出高电平的像素选择信号G,依据信号G使像素选择用TFT213在1水平期间导通。而且,在1水平期间中,与从驱动信号产生电路101输出至水平驱动电路302的水平驱动信号STH(未示出)同步,将显示信号D从水平驱动电路302输出至显示像素210的显示信号线212,并通过像素选择用TFT213将显示信号D施加在驱动于TFT214的栅极,并且由保持电容218进行保持。此外,将对应于显示信号D的电流从驱动用TFT214提供给有机EL元件216,而使有机EL元件216发光。
这样,根据本实施例,由于在还没有把显示信号D输出到显示信号线212的回扫期间,抽取驱动用TFT214的栅极绝缘膜中的载流子(空穴),并使其电气特性初期化,因此可抑制显示面板400的残像现象,并提升其显示质量。
此外,在上述实施例中,采用的是有机EL元件216作为发光元件,但也可采用有机EL元件之外的发光元件,例如无机EL元件或发光二极管来取代。
此外,在上述的实施例中,像素选择用TFT213,例如N通道型TFT,驱动用TFT214,例如P通道型TFT,但这些TFT也可以是其它导电通道型。当驱动用TFT214为N通道型TFT时,与上述实施例相反,第2电位V2设定得比第1电位V1低。
此外,在上述实施例中,电位切换电路103设置在控制用LSI 100中,但如图3的等效电路所示,也可设置在显示面板400中。

各显示像素具有:像素选择用晶体管,依据像素选择信号而导通;发光元件;驱动用晶体管,依据通过所述像素选择用晶体管施加的显示信号来驱动所述发光元件;及保持电容,连接到所述驱动用晶体管的栅极与保持电容线之间,且保持所述显示信号;
而且,具备电位切换电路,其在回扫期间中将所述保持电容线的电位从第1电位切换为与所述第1电位不同的第2电位,而将所述驱动用晶体管设为关断状态,且在回扫期间结束前,将所述保持电容线的电位从所述第2电位切换回复到所述第1电位。
2.根据权利要求1所述的主动矩阵型显示装置,其中,所述第2电位比所述第1电位高。
3.根据权利要求2所述的主动矩阵型显示装置,其中,所述第2电位与供给至所述发光元件的电源电位相同。
4.根据权利要求3所述的主动矩阵型显示装置,其中,所述第1电位是接地电位。
5.根据权利要求1至4中任一项所述的主动矩阵型显示装置,其中,所述发光元件是有机电激发光元件。
6.一种主动矩阵型显示装置的驱动方法,所述主动矩阵型显示装置具备配置成矩阵状的多个显示像素,
各显示像素具有:像素选择用晶体管,依据像素选择信号而导通;发光元件;驱动用晶体管,依据通过所述像素选择用晶体管施加的显示信号来驱动所述发光元件;及保持电容,连接到所述驱动用晶体管的栅极与保持电容线之间,且保持所述显示信号;所述驱动方法的特征为:
在回扫期间中将所述保持电容线的电位从第1电位切换为与所述第1电位不同的第2电位,而将所述驱动用晶体管设为关断状态,
且在回扫期间结束前,将所述保持电容线的电位从所述第2电位切换回复到所述第1电位,
在回扫期间结束后的影像显示期间,依据所述像素选择信号并通过所述像素选择用晶体管将所述显示信号施加于所述驱动用晶体管。
7.根据权利要求6所述的主动矩阵型显示装置的驱动方法,其中,所述第2电位比所述第1电位高。
8.根据权利要求7所述的主动矩阵型显示装置的驱动方法,其中,所述第2电位与供给至所述发光元件的电源电位相同。
9.根据权利要求8所述的主动矩阵型显示装置的驱动方法,其中,所述第1电位是接地电位。
10.根据权利要求6至9中任一项所述的主动矩阵型显示装置的驱动方法,其中,所述发光元件是有机电激发光元件。
