背景技术
近年来,有机发光二极管(OLED)变得越来越重要。这至少部分是由于OLED在各种产品中潜在的技术可能性,包括例如多色自发光平板显示器。OLED与其它发光器件相比表现出几个优点。这些优点中的一些包括其宽范围的颜色发射能力、相对低压(例如<3V)的操作能力、低功率损耗下的高效率、宽视角和高对比度。
典型的OLED包括阳极、阴极、以及置于阳极和阴极之间的至少两个有机材料层。在很多OLED中,阳极包含相对较高功函的材料,例如铟锡氧化物(ITO),阴极通常包含相对较低功函的材料,例如钙(Ca)。在典型OLED中的有机材料层之一包括能够传输空穴的层,因此通常称为空穴传输层。另一有机材料层通常包括能够传输电子的层,因此通常称为电子传输层。电子传输层也可以用作发光介质(或发射层)。可选择地,可以在空穴传输层和电子传输层之间放置另外的发射层。在每一种情况中,当OLED被适当加偏压时,阳极会将空穴(正电荷载体)注入到空穴传输层中,阴极会将电子注入到电子传输层中。注入的空穴和电子各自朝向带相反电荷的电极迁移。当电子和空穴位于同一分子上时,就会形成Frenkel激子,发射可见光。

发明内容
本发明提供了具有改进的稳定性、亮度和效率的OLED。在一种实施方案中,仅通过举例,有机发光二极管包括阳极、类金刚石碳(DLC)层、有机空穴传输层、有机发射层和阴极。DLC层置于阳极之上,厚度小于约10nm。有机空穴传输层置于DLC层之上,有机发射层置于空穴传输层之上,阴极置于有机发射层之上。
在另一种示例性的实施方案中,有机发光二极管包括基体、阳极、四面体无定形碳(ta-C)层、有机空穴传输层、有机发射层和阴极。阳极置于基体之上,ta-C层置于阳极之上,有机空穴传输层置于ta-C层之上,有机发射层置于空穴传输层之上,阴极置于有机发射层之上。

现在开始描述,首先参照图1,示出了依照本发明的一种实施方案的有机发光二极管(OLED)的横截面简视图。该OLED 100包括在其上沉积有多个不同材料层的基体102。在这些层中包括阳极104、有机空穴传输层106、有机发射层108和阴极110。基体102优选由玻璃制成,但可以认识到其可以由其它光学透明或基本半透明的材料制成,例如石英、陶瓷、透明塑料、合成树脂或多种柔性透明塑料基体中的任一种。可选择地,该基体106可以由刚性或柔性的不透明材料制成,比如例如柔性不锈钢箔。在后一种情况中,使用顶发射OLED体系结构通过透明阴极释放出发射光。
阳极104直接置于基体102之上,当与适当的电压相连时用于提供空穴。在所述的实施方案中,阳极104包含铟锡氧化物(ITO),厚度为约60nm。然而,可以认识到阳极104可以包含任何其它目前已知或未来待开发的阳极材料。其它能够用于阳极104的材料包括例如掺杂各种金属的氧化锡、氧化锌(ZnO)、掺杂各种金属的ZnO、金、银、钯、硅、导电性碳、π-共轭聚合物,例如聚苯胺、聚噻吩、聚吡咯或各种其它光学透明或至少充分半透明的导电性阳极材料,使得由OLED 100发出的光能够被看到。此外可以认识到用于阳极104的特定材料的厚度可以变化以实现所需的性质。
有机空穴传输层(HTL)106,如其名称的含义那样,是能够容易地传输由阳极104提供的空穴的有机材料。在所述实施方案中,该有机空穴传输层106是聚亚乙基二氧噻吩(PEDOT),厚度为约20nm,但是可以认识到多种其它有机材料,目前已知的或未来待开发的,以及其它层厚都可以使用以实现所需的性质。例如,该空穴传输层106也可以由各种其它水溶性聚合物材料制成。
有机发射层(EL)108,如其名称的含义那样,用于制备电致发光发射。然而,除了该功能之外,由于其能够容易地传输电子,该有机发射层也用作电子传输层。在所述实施方案中,该有机发射层108包含聚(对亚苯基亚乙烯基)(PPV),厚度为约90nm。然而可以认识到该有机发射层108可以由其它多种表现出电子传输性和电致发光特性的有机材料,目前已知的或未来待开发的中的,任一种制成,发射层108的厚度也可以变化以实现所需的性质。一些目前已知的适用的材料的非限定性实例包括聚芴(PFO)系列材料。此外可以认识到在图2中所示的替代性的实施方案中,OLED 200可以包含单独的有机电子传输层202和单独的有机发射层204。在这种实施方案中,有机发射层204置于有机空穴传输层106和有机电子传输层202之间。
用于将电子注入到有机发射层108中的阴极110优选包含具有相对较低功函的材料。在所述的实施方案中,阴极110包含钙(Ca),其厚度为约5nm。可以认识到这仅是示例性的,多种其它适合的材料,目前已知的或未来待开发的中的任意一种,以及其它适合的阴极厚度都可以使用。其它适合的材料的一些实例包括但不局限于铟、铝、钡和镁、锂、钠、钾或其它合金材料,例如Mg:Ag、Li:Al、Mg:Al、Ca:Ag和Ca:Al,仅提出了一部分。可以认识到特定的材料和厚度可以变化以实现所需的性质。
此外如图1和2中所示,OLED 100可以另外包括沉积在阴极110上的保护层112。该保护层112可以包含各种类型材料中的任一种。在所述的实施方案中,该保护层112包含银(Ag),厚度为约200nm。其它适合用作保护层112的材料包括但不局限于铝(Al)或具有高导电性和反射率的合金材料(Mg:Ag、Mg:Al、Ca:Ag)。可以认识到保护层112的厚度不需要为200nm,但可以改变以达到所需的性质。此外可以认识到在各种替代的实施方案中,OLED 100、200可以在没有保护层112的情况下实施。
除了构成所述OLED 100、200的各种上述部件之外,OLED 100、200进一步包括相对较薄的类金刚石碳(DLC)层114。该DLC层114设置在阳极104和空穴传输层106之间的基体上。尽管已知有各种类型的DLC,但所用的一种特别优选类型的DLC是四面体无定形碳(ta-C)。如通常所知的,四面体无定形碳具有相对较高百分比(例如,>80%)的sp3键。该相对较高的sp3含量使得ta-C表现出相对较高的硬度、化学惰性和较高的电阻率。当如下面更详细描述地那样进行沉积时,该ta-C层114表现出独特的电学、机械和光学性质,其相对较光滑,并对频率在可见光区域到红外光区域范围内的光是基本透明的。
从上述描述中看到如图1所示的优选OLED 100通常具有阳极/DLC/HTL/EL/阴极的构造。如上进一步所述,这些材料层中每个的具体材料和厚度可以变化;然而,用于研究和对比目的的具体OLED构造为ITO(60nm)/ta-C/PEDOT(20nm)/PPV(90nm)/Ca(5nm)/Ag(200nm)。使用这种特定的构造,制备五种具有不同ta-C层114厚度的OLED 100,并对其测试,与使用相同方法制备但不含ta-C层114的OLED相对比。下面将首先描述这些OLED每种的特殊制备方法,然后描述其测试结果。
首先得到涂有60nm厚度的ITO层104,并具有50Ω/平方的薄层电阻的玻璃基体102。然后使用有机溶剂(例如丙酮和乙醇)优选在超声浴中清洗该ITO涂覆基体。然后优选在去离子水中冲洗该清洁的ITO涂覆基体,然后优选使用惰性气体,例如氮气干燥。然后,可以使该ITO涂覆基体在预洗室中经过氩等离子体清洗。
ITO涂覆基体一经清洁,然后将ta-C层114沉积在ITO 104上。优选地,在室温下使用过滤阴极真空电弧(FCVA)沉积***沉积ta-C层114。如通常所知的,FCVA沉积***使用阴极电弧斑点发射等离子体束,其可以包含各种大粒子和中性原子。因此,FCVA沉积***使用此过滤技术除去不需要的大粒子和中性原子。特别地,FCVA***产生横向磁场,过滤出不需要的大粒子和中性原子,使得只有在特定的能量范围内的粒子能达到ITO涂覆基体。
如上所述,将具有五种不同厚度的ta-C层114沉积在五种不同的ITO涂覆基体上。ta-C层厚度为6.0nm、3.0nm、1.0nm、0.5nm和0.3nm。在沉积到所需层厚之后,使用原子力显微镜(AFM)技术测定各ta-C层114的表面形态和粗糙度。在1μm×1μm的区域内得到AFM图像。为了对比,在没有ta-C沉积的ITO涂覆基体上的5μm×5μm的区域内也得到AFM图像。各实施例的表面粗糙度数据总结于表1。

在将ta-C层114沉积到所需厚度之后,在各ITO涂覆基体上沉积PEDOT层106和PPV层108。参照特别优选的实施方案,使用常规旋涂器将20nm厚的PEDOT层106和90nm厚的PPV层108各自旋涂到各ta-C层114上。然后,使用Edwards Auto 306***在2.0×10-6托的压力下通过罩板经热蒸镀在各PPV层108上沉积5nm厚的Ca(99.5%)阴极110和200nm厚的银(99.99%)保护层112。
使用上述方法制备的六种OLED 100各自的发射面积约为2×2mm2。测定各OLED 100的电流密度、亮度和电流效率作为操作电压的函数,并测定在恒定电流下其亮度衰减作为操作时间的函数。这些测试的各自结果分别图示于图3~6中,现在将对其进行更详细的描述。
首先参照图3,看到各OLED的阈电压基本相同,具有厚度为0.3nm的ta-C层的OLED是唯一比标准OLED(即不含ta-C层的OLED)的电流密度高的OLED。这表明具有厚度为0.3nm的ta-C层的OLED的电流注入增加并不是由于隧道效应。相反,由于超薄ta-C层(例如厚度≤0.3nm)是不连续的,因此认为具有厚度为0.3nm的ta-C层的OLED所表现出的电流密度增加是由于在ITO层上的ta-C孤点之间形成纳米结构界面。进一步认为这些纳米结构界面注入比均匀ta-C/ITO界面更高的电流密度。因此,具有厚度为0.5nm或更大的ta-C层的OLED是连续的,具有均匀的ta-C/ITO界面,因此比标准OLED的电流密度更低。
从以上描述和图3中的图示看到,超薄ta-C层(例如≤0.3nm)会提高来自阳极102的空穴注入,而有些厚的ta-C层(例如≥0.5nm)会抑制来自阳极102的空穴注入。但是在图4中看到具有厚度为0.5nm的ta-C层的OLED的亮度比具有厚度为0.3nm的ta-C层的OLED要高得多。而且,即使图3显示具有厚度为0.5nm和1.0nm的ta-C层的OLED的电流-电压特性曲线基本相同,但图4显示具有厚度为0.5nm的ta-C层的OLED的亮度明显更高。图4中还显示随着ta-C层的厚度增大到1.0nm以上,OLED的亮度随之降低。这是因为随着ta-C层的厚度增大,会进一步抑制来自阳极104的空穴注入,进一步降低光学透明性。
现在参照图5,看到具有厚度为0.3nm、0.5nm和1.0nm的ta-C层的OLED各自具有比标准OLED更高的电流效率,而具有厚度为0.5nm的ta-C层的OLED具有最高的电流效率。更特别地,在5.0V时标准OLED的电流效率为1.1cd/A,在5.0V时具有厚度为0.5nm的ta-C层的器件的电流效率为2.7cd/A,其几乎是标准OLED的2.5倍。再次参照图3和4,效率的提高是由于厚度为0.5nm的ta-C层对来自阳极104的一些空穴传输的抑制作用,由此平衡了OLED中的空穴和电子电流。
具有ta-C层的OLED表现出的最明显的改进是器件稳定性。这在图6中得到最明显的显示,该图描述了在恒定电流下亮度衰减对操作时间的函数,最初亮度为约105cd/m2。如图6中所示,标准OLED在工作约1.4×104秒之后完全损坏。然而,具有厚度为0.5nm的ta-C层的OLED在工作约2×105秒之后没有明显的亮度衰减,具有厚度为1.0nm的ta-C层的OLED在工作约1.3×104秒之后的亮度衰减其最初亮度的约10%,具有厚度为3.0nm的ta-C层的OLED在工作约1.6×104秒之后的衰减其最初亮度的约18%。
标准OLED的相对较快的亮度衰减至少部分是由于裸露的ITO层102的表面粗糙度(参见表1)。ITO层104表面上的相对较锋利的尖峰产生非均匀的电场和非均匀的空穴注入。特别地,在尖峰区域内的电场要高得多,这会造成局部较高的电流密度,导致局部过热并形成黑点。黑点的数量和尺寸连续增长,直到将整个OLED发射区域损耗掉,就会观察不到发光。相反地,具有ta-C层的OLED具有相对较光滑的表面,因此具有更均匀的电场和电流密度。而且,ta-C层会防止从ITO阳极104到有机层106、108的氧污染,降低来自ITO阳极104的空穴注入,两者都会提高OLED的寿命。
在此所述的OLED器件100、200包括设置在阳极104和空穴传输层106之间的相对较薄的DLC层114,以提高发光效率和操作寿命。相对较薄的DLC层114会抑制空穴注入,平衡电荷流动,提高效率,并提高阳极104的表面光滑性,其有助于提高操作寿命。
尽管在前述的发明详述中给出了至少一种示例性的实施方案,但应当理解其存在大量的变化。也应当理解该一种或多种示例性的实施方案仅仅是实施例,并不用于在任何方面限定本发明的范围、应用或构造。然而,前述详细说明将为本领域技术人员提供用于实施本发明的示例性实施方案的简便路线。应当理解在不偏离后附权利要求中提出的本发明的范围内,可以对示例性的实施方案中所述要素的功能和排列进行各种改变。
Claims (8)
1.有机发光二极管(100),包括:
阳极(104);
四面体无定形碳(ta-C)层(114),设置于阳极(104)之上,该四面体无定形碳(ta-C)层(114)的厚度小于1.0nm;
有机空穴传输层(106),设置于四面体无定形碳(ta-C)层(114)之上;
有机发射层(108),设置于空穴传输层(106)之上;以及
阴极(110),设置于有机发射层(108)之上。
2.如权利要求1的OLED(100),其中阳极(104)包括铟-锡-氧化物(ITO)。
3.如权利要求1的OLED(100),其中阳极(104)包括选自以下的材料:铟-锡-氧化物(ITO)、掺杂金属的氧化锌(ZnO)。
4.如权利要求1的OLED(100),其中有机空穴传输层(106)包括聚亚乙基二氧噻吩(PEDOT)。
5.如权利要求1的OLED(100),其中有机空穴传输层(106)包括水溶性聚合物。
6.如权利要求1的OLED(100),其中有机发射层(108)包括聚(对-亚苯基亚乙烯基)(PPV)。
7.如权利要求1的OLED(100),其中阴极(110)包括钙。
8.如权利要求1的OLED(100),其中四面体无定形碳(ta-C)层(114)的厚度为0.5nm。
