Starter The present invention relates to a starter comprising a coupling comprising a drive member capable of being moved axially so as to come into engagement with a rotating member, coaxial with the preceding member to ensure its driving.
In most known starters of this type, latching means, often constituted by wolf teeth, are interposed between the coupling members to allow the driven member to turn on its own or to continue to turn while that the drive member stops or even rotates in the opposite direction; this arrangement has, among other drawbacks, that of giving rise to considerable relative friction between the temporarily coupled members and consequently to wear and rattling, these drawbacks being particularly troublesome when the driven member has to rotate alone for long periods.
One of the essential aims of the present invention is to automatically ensure, in a starter of the type in question, total separation between the driven member and the drive member, in at least one angular position of the latter.
The starter according to the invention is charac terized in that it comprises resilient means for disengaging and resilient means for providing the clutch acting axially in opposite directions on the drive member and solid means in rotation of said drive member to prevent the action of the elastic clutch means at least in an angular position of said drive member so that, in this position, the two members are no longer in engagement with one another 'other.
Therefore if, for example, the elastic clutch means are the strongest, when the rotating drive member is in said angular position, it is no longer subject to the sole action of the elastic means. clutch and therefore it is kept disengaged. On the other hand, as soon as said drive member is rotated, it is subjected to the action of the two elastic means and because the action of the clutch means is predominant, the starter is automatically engaged.
This state remains until the drive member again reaches said angular position, either until it is brought there by rotation in the direction of the drive, or when it is brought back to it by a stroke. angular return, after which the clutch means are again put out of action by the aforementioned means, which determines an automatic disengagement. The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an axial section taken on line 1-1 of FIG. 2 of a hydraulic starter for an internal combustion engine comprising an automatic clutch clutch.
Fig. 2 is a section taken in two planes passing through line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken in a plane passing through line 3-3 of FIG. 2 and fig. 4 to 8 are axial sections showing the arrangement of the elastic return means of the rack, and FIG. 9 is a section taken in a plane passing through line 9-9 of FIG. 8.
Referring to the drawings, we see at 1 a pinion carried by a hollow shaft mounted idle in bearings 3 and 4 formed in a housing 5, this pinion bearing a plate 6 with an annular flange which constitutes the drive element on which are formed claws or wolf teeth 7 intended to cooperate with claws 8 integral with the shaft 9 to be driven coaxial with the pinion 1. The shaft 2 of the pinion 1 is mounted so as to be able to slide relative to the housing 5 .
In the example shown, the pinion is driven by means of a single rack 10 formed in the body of a piston 11 which cons titue, with a cylinder 12, in which it slides, a powered hydraulic jack, in 13; in pressurized liquid supplied by an oleo-pneumatic and, more generally, hydraulic accumulator. Elastic means 14, which will be described later, ensure the return of the rack to its rest position.
The disengagement is carried out automatically by several very simple devices each constituted by a spring 15 which is received in a bore 16 drilled in the body of the housing 5 and bearing, by one of the ends, against the bottom of this bore, and, by its other end, against a floating washer 17 axially secured to the shaft 2, this spring thus constantly stressing the assembly of the pinion 1, of the shaft 2 and of the plate 6 carrying the claws 7 from right to left, if reference is made to FIG. 2, that is to say in the direction which ensures the disengagement.
In the example shown, the washer 17 is simply held in place by a resilient steel wire ring 18 which is housed in a groove provided on the shaft 2, this arrangement being intended to simplify assembly by allowing insert, from the right end (see fig. 2), the assembly 1-2-6, assembly being completed by the installation, through the left end, of the washer 17, then of the elastic ring in steel wire. This end is then closed by a removable bottom 19 held in place by bolts 20. To ensure the clutch, the device comprises a sliding element consisting of a rod 21, constantly subjected to the action of a spring 22, of which the force is such that its action is clearly preponderant in relation to that of the springs 15.
The plate 6 bears, on its left face, if one refers to FIG. 2, a depression with a conical wall 23. The rod 21 ends in an equally conical part 24 which, when the plate occupies the angular position shown in FIG. 2 and which corresponds to the rest position of the rack, engages in said depression 23, this rod being, in this position, at the end of travel, as can also be seen in FIG. 2. It will be understood that, in this position, the spring 22 has no action, since an annular shoulder 25 of the rod 21 abuts against the bottom of the housing of the spring 22 in the housing 5.
So; the hand springs 15 hold the plate 6 in this position, the claws 7 of which are thus clearly disengaged from the claws 8.
As soon as the rack has started to move from right to left, if we refer to fig. 1, the pinion 1 receives an angular displacement and the end of the member 21 is pushed out of the depression 23, so that the spring 22 is compressed and exerts through the rod 21 a thrust on the flat surface of the tray 6.
As the force of the spring 22 is clearly greater than that of the springs 15, the plate 6 is biased from left to right, with reference to FIG. 2, and the clutch is secured. The springs 15 ensure the return of the pinion to position d in fig. 2 when, after starting, the rack has returned to its rest position and has returned the depression 23 to the starting angular position.
In addition, if the travel of the rack is such that the plate 6 makes a complete revolution during this travel, the depression 23 will resume said rest position at the end of this travel and the device will remain disengaged as long as the jack remains actuated.
This clutch and disengagement system is excessively simple, does not require any precise machining and therefore allows safe operation of the starter, without causing expensive or delicate complications.
The pinion shaft 2 is hollow, as has already been indicated, which allows a shaft 27 to pass through the pinion, which carries at one of its ends 26 a square allowing to engage a crank on this end, while the other end of the shaft 27 carries claws 28 intended to cooperate with claws 29 provided on the shaft to be driven.
It goes without saying that the shaft 27, intended for starting by hand, could be replaced by a shaft which is constantly integral with the shaft 9 of the motor. As explained above, the pinion 1 has a sufficient diameter to ensure the desired start using a single chainring, while ensuring sufficient axial passage for the shaft 27. This pinion could, moreover, have larger dimensions to allow a larger diameter shaft to pass, which would of course lead to a certain increase in the dimensions of the assembly, since the increase in the diameter of the pinion leads to a corresponding increase in the length of the rack and therefore of the cylinder.
The elastic means intended to ensure the return of the rack to its rest position are arranged so as to reduce their size to a minimum, which makes it possible, in particular, if necessary, to increase the length of the jack without too much inconvenience. .
In fig. 1 and 4 to 9 show various embodiments of the elastic return means of the rack, these figures making it possible to better understand the advantages which result from this arrangement.
Referring to the drawings, it can be seen in FIG. 4 a single return spring 44 disposed in the extension of the cylinder, this spring being housed between the bottom of a tubular casing 41 and the end 42 of the rack and acting on the piston by means of a washer 43. The axial size of such a device, in the case chosen as an example, is 216 mm. In fig. 5, there is shown a variant in which the single spring 44 of FIG. 4 is replaced by three concentric springs 45, 46 and 47. This arrangement with three springs already makes it possible to reduce the length in the same example to 184.5 mm. all other things being equal.
In fig. 6, another variant has been shown in which three return springs have also been adopted, but these three springs, instead of working in parallel, as in the case of FIG. 5, work in series. Indeed, the spring 48 acts on a movable tubular element 49 which itself acts on the spring 50, the latter acting in turn, by a movable tubular element 51, on the third spring 52.
This arrangement with three springs working in series reduces the bulk, still in the same example, with the same return force, to 182 mm.
It is also possible to combine a spring of a relatively large section with two concentric springs of smaller sections, in such a way that these last two springs work in parallel and that all of these two springs work in series with the first spring. This arrangement allows the best use of the three springs while reducing the bulk which is, in the example shown, brought, with the same restoring force, to 178.6 mm. Such an arrangement is shown in the embodiment of FIG. 1.
However, it is possible to reduce the axial bulk even more considerably by using the arrangement shown in FIGS. 7, 8 and 9.
In this embodiment, the outer spring 53 has an inner diameter such that the body 42 of the rack can engage inside this spring. With this arrangement, there is provided a movable tubular member 54, the spring 53 bearing, on the one hand, on the bottom of the casing 41 and, on the other hand, on the rim 55 of the tubular member 54, while the other two springs 56 and 57 are arranged between the bottom 58 of the tubular member 54 and the end 42 of the rack.
As can be seen in FIG. 8, at full stroke, the end of the rack 42 engages inside the movable tubular element 54, so that, if the three springs 53, 56 and 57 are calculated in such a manner, that at the full travel of the rack, all three of them are fully compressed, in fact the additional size of the elastic return means is reduced to the size of the two springs 56 and 57.
If a comparison is made with the return devices already mentioned, we obtain, for the same return force, a size of 156 mm. The size of the return means proper, that is to say the space to be added to the length of the rack at the end of the working stroke, is, in the example of FIGS. 7, 8 and 9, 36 mm. instead of being 96mm. as in the case of fig. 4. The reduction in bulk is therefore 631 / o.
This arrangement is moreover made possible by the fact that a single rack is used, since all the necessary space is available in the extension of the jack. The device shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 is presented in a symmetrical manner, the central casing carrying two tubular elements arranged in the extension of one another, one ren closing the cylinder and the other, the elastic return means.
Independently of these essential provisions, a certain number of additional constructive provisions can be provided, making it possible to increase the robustness of the device, simplify assembly, reduce its cost price and avoid any possibility of leakage of the pressurized fluid which supplies the unit. cylinder.
One of these arrangements consists in forming the jack by a tube 12 and by two end caps, respectively 40 and 31, the cha skin 40 being pierced with an axial passage intended to be crossed by the piston 11 and receiving it. even the tube 12 which is screwed into the internal thread 33 of this cap 40, the centering being ensured by two non-threaded parts, respectively 34 and 35, provided on either side of the thread 33. The end of the tube 12 abuts against a shoulder 36 of the cap 40. The penetration of the cap 40 into the casing 5 is limited by a shoulder 30. The cap 40 is fixed by bolts 37 in the body of the casing 5.
The second cap 31 is screwed onto the other end of the tube 12, sealing being ensured by a seal 38. Furthermore, the seal between the piston and the cylinder 12 is ensured by another seal 39.
In order to prevent the shock which occurs at the end of the cylinder's stroke from being transmitted directly to the housing, the shoulder 36, as seen at 60, has an internal diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the tube 12, while the piston comprises, at its other end on the right, if one refers to FIG. 1, a shoulder 59. Thus, at the end of the stroke, the shoulder 59 abuts against the edge 60 of the shoulder 36.
The mobile assembly, consisting of the pinion 1 and the claw plate 6, is mounted in the housing 5 using two bearings 3 and 4 of different diameters, the diameter of the bearing 3 being smaller than that of the bearing 4, which, in turn, is slightly greater than the outside diameter of pinion 1. This arrangement, while ensuring good centering, allows the moving assembly to be introduced through the right-hand end of the casing, if we refer to fig. 2. Furthermore, this arrangement makes it possible to provide a certain clearance between the outer diameter of the plate 6 and the casing 5, which avoids the drawbacks that may result from the deformation of the claws during operation of the device.
In order to prevent the cylinder 12 from being scratched in the long run by the piston 11 which, because it constitutes the body of the rack, must be made of a very hard metal, a ring of a suitable metal is provided. chosen, 61, of an outer diameter slightly greater than the outer diameter of the piston, this ring serving as a guide for the piston and being alone in contact with the inner wall of the cylinder.
Finally, in the example shown in FIG. 2, the teeth of the pinion and the rack are slightly oblique so that during the active stroke of the rack, the pinion tends to move to the right, which gives a safety of engagement, even if the jaws are slightly deformed.
