Claims (15)

  1. Combustion engine starter having a centrally holed output pinion (18), notably for a motor vehicle, comprising a casing provided with a front bearing (12) having a front face (120) that has an opening (312), a starter drive assembly provided with a bushing (26) that has a front end (126, 127) passing through the opening (312) in the front bearing (12) and carrying the output pinion (18) outside the front bearing (12), complementary splines (67, 167) belonging to the external periphery of the front end of the bushing (26) and to the internal periphery of the output pinion (18), respectively, a groove (64, 164) interrupting the splines (67) of the bushing (26) for mounting a stop (60, 160) for axially immobilizing the pinion, a clearance compensation spring (61) that urges the pinion into contact with the stop, wherein, for the one part, the front end of the bushing (26) has a shoulder (130) for supporting the rear end of the spring (61), and, for the other part, the pinion (18) has, at the rear, a blind housing (261) for mounting the spring (61), characterized in that the stop (60, 160) is formed by an elastic ring having a height greater than its thickness, in that the elastic ring (60, 160) is housed with a radial clearance at least in part in an annular chamber (62) made in the front face (183) of the pinion (18), and in that the internal periphery of the elastic ring (60, 160) is mounted in the groove (61, 161) in the bushing (26).
  2. Starter according to Claim 1, characterized in that the external periphery of the elastic ring (60, 160) is housed entirely in the chamber (62).
  3. Starter according to Claim 1, characterized in that the majority of the external periphery of the elastic ring (60, 160) is housed in the chamber (62).
  4. Starter according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the outside diameter of the elastic ring (60, 160) is greater than the outside diameter of the clearance compensation spring (61).
  5. Starter according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the front bearing (12) has a sleeve (112) directed in the opposite direction to the pinion (18), and in that the opening (312) in the front bearing (12) is formed by the internal bore in the sleeve (112) of the front bearing (12).
  6. Starter according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the elastic ring (60) is split.
  7. Starter according to Claim 6, characterized in that the elastic ring (60) is a circlip.
  8. Starter according to any one of Claims 1 to 5, characterized in that the elastic ring (160) has inclined tabs on its internal periphery.
  9. Starter according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the side walls of the grooves (64, 164) are parallel, and in that the groove (64, 164) is deeper than the splines (67) of the bushing (126).
  10. Starter according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the front end (127, 126) of the bushing (26) has a stepped diameter and has a first portion (127) extended axially by a second portion (126) with a smaller diameter, on which the splines (67) of the bushing (26) are made, and in that the shoulder (130) of the bushing (26) is formed by the front face of the first portion (127).
  11. Starter according to Claim 10, characterized in that the second portion (126) has a groove (129), the rear end of which is next to the front face (130) of the first portion (127), and in that the groove (129) is offset axially with respect to the shoulder (130) in order to centre the rear end of the spring (61).
  12. Starter according to Claim 11, characterized in that a bearing surface for retaining the rear end of the spring (61) exists between the shoulder (130) and the groove (129).
  13. Starter according to any one of Claims 10 to 12, characterized in that the outside diameter of the second portion (126) is greater than the inside diameter of the first portion (127).
  14. Starter according to any one of Claims 10 to 13, characterized in that the front bearing (12) carries a support (181) for the pinion (18).
  15. Starter according to Claim 14, characterized in that the support is formed by a washer (181) made of elastomer that is mounted in an annular transverse housing (212) made in the front face of the front bearing (12).
