Fraiseuse.
Milling machine. The subject of the invention is a milling machine comprising a spindle headstock movable on an upright and a rotating workpiece-holder whose axis is perpendicular to the direction of the spindle. This machine is characterized by the fact that on the headstock is mounted a cutting head provided with a cutter-holder shaft which is. driven in rotation to. from the aforementioned pin.
According to one embodiment, the workpiece carrier is provided with a rotary advance control device, driven by the spindle.
In this same embodiment, the positive rotary advance control device of the workpiece carrier is connected to the spindle by means of a differential, one element of which is. connected to the advance control device of the. cutter in relation to the workpiece.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment and variants (the object of the invention.
The fi, -. 1 schematically shows in elevation a milling machine allowing the cutting, by mother hob, of cylindrical wheels with helical or straight teeth.

Fig. 3 is a similar view of the part of the milling machine carrying the control device of the turntable. Fig. 1 is a general schematic plan view of the milling machine.
Fig. 5 is a plan view, on a larger scale, of part of the tailstock and of the cutting head.
Fig. 6 is a side view corresponding to all of FIGS. 2 and. 3.
Fig. 7 is an elevational view of a variant of the cutting head shown in FIG. 2. 'FIG. 8 is the corresponding plan view.
Figs. 9 and 10 represent two variant @: of cutting head.
The milling machine shown in fig. 1 to 6 essentially comprises a bench 1 provided with horizontal slides 2 on which can move an upright 3 provided with vertical slides .1 serving as guides for the movements of a sole 5 on which can move horizontally, parallel to the direction of the horizontal slides of the bench 1, a pouch 6 provided with a horizontal pin which has been represented simply by its axis 7 in FIGS. 2 and 5.
Next to the bench 1 is a box spring 8 serving as a support for a turntable 9 of vertical axis, intended to receive the workpiece 11.
The cutters intended for cutting toothed wheels are carried by a cutting head, the shape and arrangement of which vary with the type of toothing desired. The cutting head shown in fie. 1 to. 6 is intended for cutting straight or helical toothed wheels by means of a hob. It comprises a body 12 mounted on a base 13, itself fixed on a plate 14 screwed onto the front face 15 of the pouch 6.
The cutting head 12 can be oriented on the base 13 around an axis which coincides with the axis of the spindle 7, thanks to a control made up of a toothed sector 17 (visible in dotted lines in fig. 6) integral with the body of the. head 12 and engaged with a worm 1.8 housed in a housing 19 integral with the base 13. The screw 18 is provided. at one of its ends an maneuvering square 21 which protrudes out of the housing 19 and which is intended to receive a crank for adjusting the orientation of the head 12 on the base 13.
A graduation 22 of the base 13, cooperating with a mark 23 carried by the head 12, gives the inclination of the head in degrees, while a graduation 24 (see fig. 5) carried by the maneuvering square 21 of the screw 18 cooperates with a mark 25 (see FIGS. 2 and 5) carried by the housing 19 to indicate with precision the minutes of the angle of inclination of the head. The head 12 can. be immobilized on the base 13 by means of bolts 16.
The milling cutter 27 is mounted on a shaft 28, the axis of which is perpendicular to the axis of the spindle 7 and which pivots in two bearings 29 and <B> 30 </B> fixed on the. head 12 by means of bolts 26, the heads of which are placed in T-shaped grooves 31 made on the front face of the cutting head; this shaft 28 is coupled by means of a sleeve 32 to a splined shaft 33 on which is. threaded a toothed wheel 34 in engagement with a toothed wheel 35 integral with a shaft represented by its axis 38 in FIG. 5; this shaft carries a hollow toothed wheel 36 engaged with a worm 37 driven directly by the spindle 7.
The shaft 33 is slidably mounted in the toothed wheel 34,: so as to allow the drive: of cutters of different dimensions mounted on cutter shafts of variable length, the position of the bearings 29 and 30 being adjustable at will along the grooves 31 of the head 12.
The workpiece support plate 9 (fig. 1, 3 and 1) is integral with a toothed crown 39 eng ng with a pinion 41 integral with a hollow toothed wheel 42, which is engaged with a worm 43 which can be driven by a powerful motor 44 via a clutch device 45; this transmission is used, in the form of execution shown, for vertical turning work.
When it comes to making the platter perform a simple forward rotary movement, or a movement. indexing, it is necessary to disconnect the vertical turning motor 44 by disengaging the clutch device 45; the screw 43 can. then be driven by a rapid feed motor 47 (fig. 5) through another clutch device. 48. In order to enable the size of toothed wheels to be carried out by mother hob, the workpiece carrier 9 is provided with a rotary advance control device, driven by the spindle. This control device is described below.
The worm 43 for controlling the rotation of the plate is integral with a horizontal shaft 49 carrying an eonic pinion 50 engaging with another bevel pinion 51 carried by a shaft 53 on which is also mounted a toothed wheel .54. ; the latter is engaged with a toothed wheel 56 fixed on a shaft which carries a toothed wheel 57 meshing with a toothed wheel 58 mounted on the end of a horizontal splined shaft 59 supported by two bearings 61 and 62 that presents bank 1 of mon tant 3.
This. splined shaft 59 passes through a housing 63 integral with the upright 3 and imprisoning a bevel gear 64 mounted at. sliding on the splined shaft 59 and. meshing with a bevel gear 66 mounted at. sliding on the lower end of a vertical splined shaft 67 held, on the one hand, at its lower end, in the housing 63 and., on the other hand, at its upper end, in a fixed support 68 on the amount. 3 by means of screws 69. The vertical splined shaft 67 passes through a hollow toothed wheel 71 mounted at. sliding on it and trapped in the sole 5 of the doll.
This wheel 71 is engaged with a worm <B> 72 </B> mounted to slide on a small horizontal splined shaft 73, integral with a toothed wheel 74 meshing with a toothed wheel 75, itself engaged with a toothed ring 76. The shaft 73 is mounted to slide don the worm 72 so as to ensure constant and correct transmission regardless of the relative horizontal position of the pou l) ée fi on its sole 5, being. given that Ar ber 73 is. integral with the wheel 74 which is mounted in the base 7.3 carried by the doll, while the screw 72 is mounted in the. doll sole 5.
The crown 76 can, using a clutch device not shown, be made integral with the spindle 7; either directly or via a differential connected to the control device of the vertical movement. tieal translation of the headstock, depending on whether you want to cut straight wheels or helical wheels.
l.11 effect, for the cutting of the latter, as the hob is moved in translation, it is necessary to make a correction of the. angular position of the plate as a function of the height position of the cutter.
To this end, the crown: toothed 76 (fig. 5) can, by means of said clutch device, mesh with a pinion 78 integral with a sun gear 79 of the differential which is carried by the tailstock and of which the planet carrier 81 is integral with a toothed wheel 82 meshing with another toothed wheel 83 connected in rotation to the. pin 7.
The other gear 84 of the differential is integral with a 11011th hollow toothed 86 in mesh with a fine Mans screw 87 (fig. 6) mounted at the lower end of a shaft 88 (represented simply by its axis). whose upper end carries another worm 89 and which is carried by the doll 6. The screw 89 meshes with a hollow toothed wheel 91 wedged on a shaft 92 (fig. 5) which is also carried by the doll 6 and which has external grooves in. taken with complementary splines of a hollow shaft 93 carried by the sole 5 of the headstock.
This shaft 93 can be connected, by a coupling device 94, to a shaft 96 provided with a worm 97 (FIG. 2) engaged with a toothed wheel 98, itself engaged with a worm. 99 which in turn meshes with a toothed wheel 100, the hub of which constitutes a rotating nut screwed onto a fixed vertical screw 101 and which serves for the up and down movement of the tailstock 6.
Screw 99 is. connected by a shaft 102 (represented simply by: its axis) to an electric motor 103 (Fig. 1) carried by the sole 5 of the. doll, and it is this motor 103 which drives the doll 6 in its vertical translational movement along the upright 3.
The assembly of the differential 79, 81, 84 and the toothed wheels 76, 78 and 82, 83 is designed in such a way that when the tailstock 6 is im movable in height, that is to say when the electric motor 103 does not rotate and that the coupling device 94 is engaged, the sun gear 84 being, therefore, immo bile, la. crown 76 rotates at the same angular speed as toothed wheel 83, that is to say at the same speed as spindle 7 of the machine.
The writing milling machine makes it possible to cut straight toothed wheels by hob and operates as follows: The cutting wheel 11 is fixed on the turntable 9 coaxially with the latter.
The mother cutter 27 being of helical size, it is obviously necessary to incline the cutter shaft 28 by the angle corresponding to the helix angle of the mother cutter; for this, after having loosened the bolts 16, the square 21 is maneuvered observing the graduations 22 and 2-1 to bring the marks 23 and 25 opposite the graduations corresponding to the desired angle. Then lock the bolts 16.
The mother cutter 27 is brought to the suitable height by adjusting the height of the headstock 6 along the upright 3 and the depth of cut is adjusted by bringing the headstock 6 more or less to the axis of the plate 9, or by moving . the upright 3 along the slides 2, or, preferably, by sliding the doll 6 horizontally on its sole 5.
The mother cutter 27 is driven in rotation from the spindle 7, as has been said above, by the intermediary of the toothed wheels 34, 35, 36 and 37, The rotational movement of the plate is ensured from the pin 7, without the intervention of the differential described.
In order for the teeth of the wheel to be cut 11 to be milled throughout its height, it suffices to give a vertical translational movement to the. doll, therefore to the cutter 27, using the control device described.
To cut a straight cylindrical wheel, one could also use a milling cutter with the appropriate modulus, mounted in place of the mother mill 27. In this case, it would obviously be necessary to place the milling shaft 28 in a horizontal position and. cut the wheel tooth by tooth by moving the milling cutter vertically, the turntable then being moved each time one passes from the machining of one tooth to the machining of the next. When using a disk cutter in this way, the connection between spindle 7 and plate 9 can be interrupted by means of a. clutch device.
The cutting of the helical cylindrical wheels is carried out as follows: First, the inclination of the cutter-holder shaft 28 is adjusted by means of the operating square 21, as in the previous example, then one adjusts the depth of the pass by adjusting the position of the headstock 6 on its sole 5. The forward movement along the toothing during execution is obtained by the vertical movement of the doll carrier sole 5 from engine 1.03.
The coupling device 94 being engaged, the angular speed of the plate 9 is corrected automatically, as a function of the translation speed of the cutter, by the differential 84-81-79 which gives the rotating plate an additional speed of rotation which is added to the speed determined by the rotation of the cutter and which is a function of the vertical displacement of the headstock, that is to say of the cutter.
In a variant of the. milling machine described, which would be intended only for the size of toothed wheels by a disc milling cutter, one could without further remove the control device of the plate, driven by the spindle. To the fi-. 7 and 8 is shown a variant of the cutting head allowing the. Hollow wheel size medium art of a ca rotte bur or fly tool.
In this variant, the cutter-holder shaft 107 is journaled in bearings 29, 30 mounts, as above. described, on a carriage 109 which has T-shaped grooves 1.11 and which can slide in the cutting head 111 in a direction parallel to the axis of the cutter-holder shaft. Carriage. 109 is hand held on the cutting head 111 by means of flanges 112 fixed to the head by means of screws represented simply by their axes 113 in FIG. 7.
The rotary drive of the milling cutter 1_1.0 (fig. 8) is. insured, in the same way as in the milling machine previously. described by a splined shaft 33 sliding in a toothed wheel 34 which meshes with another toothed wheel 35 integral with a hollow wheel 36 which meshes with a worm 37 capable of being driven by the spindle 7.
The horizontal translational movement of the <B> 110 </B> cutter carried by the carriage 109 is provided by a hollow rack 115 (fig. 8) with oblique teeth cut directly. in the base of the carriage- 109 and which is engaged with a worm 118 meshing with a hollow toothed wheel 1.19 carried by a shaft 121 on which a pinion 122 is keyed smoothing neck.
This pinion can be put cry taken with a toothed wheel 123 mounted in the base 13 on which the cutting head is rotatably mounted along an axis coinciding with. the axis of the spindle; the axis of the. wheel 123 coincides with the axis of rotation of the head, and this wheel is- wide enough to engender at the same time with a peak. - 125 non-integral with a shaft 126 which can be connected, by means of A coupling device <B> 1.27, </B> to a feed shaft 128 carried by the headstock 6.
On the shaft 126 is mounted a planetary <B> 129 </B> with a differential of which. the planet carrier <B> 131 </B> is integral with a pinion 132 which meshes with the toothed wheel 83 integral with the spindle 7, which has already been mentioned in the description of: the milling machine of FIGS. 1 to 6.
The other planetary 133 of the differential is mounted idle on the shaft 126 and it is integral with a pinion 134 which meshes with. its turn with the toothed ring 76; this one is. crazy around pin 7, as described above, and it is. meshing with the toothed wheel 75 in turn driving the toothed wheel 74 doing. part of the plate advance control device 9.
The operation of the described variant is. the following.; The cutting head 111 is arranged so that the axis of the cutter is horizontal; its level is adjusted by adjusting the vertical position of the headstock along the upright 3 so that the axis of the cutter is in the plane. median of the wheel 135 to be cut; the depth of pass is adjusted by the position of the poe 6 on its sole 5 (or that of the upright 3 on the bench 1) and the carriage 109 is brought to the vicinity of the end of its stroke, on the side of the toothed wheel 34.
The coupling device 127 is engaged and care is taken to put the coupling device 94 (fig. 2 and 5) previously described, in its inactive position, so that the rotational movement of the turntable does not. is not possibly bothered by the. control of the vertical displacement of the headstock which remains stationary during this hollow wheel cutting operation. The cutter 110 is rotated from the spindle by the gear 34, 35, 36, 37, and the longitudinal advance control of the cutter bridged by the carriage 109 is. ensured from the feed shaft 128 of the headstock via the gear 125, 123, 122, 119, 118 and the rack 115.
The angular speed of the plate 9 is. automatically corrected, depending on the speed with which the cutter moves longitudinally, by the differential 129, 131, 1.33 which imparts to the turntable an additional speed of rotation which is added to the. speed determined by the rotation of the cutter and. which is a function of the longitudinal advance of the carriage 1.09, that is to say of the cutter 110.
When cutting helical cylindrical gears, with a cutting head like that described, given that there is no longitudinal feed movement to give to the cutter, but on the contrary a vertical feed, it is important to place the dis-! positive coupling 127 in the neutral position and engage the coupling device 94 for vertical thrust advance.
In fig. 9 is shown a head 137 provided especially for cutting internal toothed wheels by means of an end mill. 138 mounted on a shaft parallel to the spindle and driven from the spindle by a transmission comprising two couples, toothed wheel-endless screw 139-140, 141-142.
If it is a question of cutting a crown 151 with a straight cut, the translational movement of the cutter will be a simple vertical movement obtained by the vertical movement of the spur 6, the turntable 9 being stationary during the machining and being simply moved each time: we go from cutting a tooth to cutting the tooth. next.
With this head, we could cut crowns with helical internal teeth by printing on the turntable: a rotational movement linked to the vertical movement of the cutter by the device which comprises the coupling device 94, but it would be necessary to provide, between the drive member of the spindle 7 and the toothed wheel 83, a clutch device (which would be engaged for the cutting of the wheels, helical cylindrical as well as the hollow wheels, and disengaged for the cutting of the helical internal toothed crowns)
and a device for locking the wheel 83 in the headstock 6, a device which would be released for cutting helical cylindrical wheels or hollow wheels and which would be placed in the locking position for cutting rings with helical internal teeth, of so that the rotation of the plate is only a function of the vertical feed of the cutter and is not influenced by the rotation of the cutter.
This cutting would be done tooth by tooth and it would be necessary to move the plate at an angle which corresponds to the pitch of the teeth each time one passes from the cutting of a tooth to the cutting of the. next tooth. In fig. 10 is shown a variant of the cutting head of FIG. 9, wherein the cutter 143 is a disc cutter mounted on a shaft perpendicular to the direction of the spindle.
The cutter is also controlled from spindle 7 by means of a transmission comprising three toothed wheel-endless screw pairs 1.44-145, 146-147, 148-1s9. This head 136 allows. to cut straight internal gears and can be used from the. same way as the head 137 shown in FIG. 9.
In a variant of the described milling machine, the headstock could. be mounted so as to slide directly on the vertical slideways 4- of upright 3. In this case, shafts 73 and 93 would not need to be sliding.
