Abstract
The present invention relates to a stretch controlled forming mechanism and method for preventing uncontrolled stretching, wrinkling, or splitting of blanks during forming. Specifically, a stretch controlled forming mechanism is provided that, in accordance with the present invention, forms and locks the blank between opposed die surfaces along selected portions thereof. Such locking prevents continued flow of material in those areas during the remainder of the formation process.
Thus, with the selected areas restricted from further material flow, the portion of the blank not previously formed can be formed between opposed dies, without damage to the selected seams or the remaining material of the blank.
