Abstract
The present invention relates to a water-repellent composition containing a stable aqueous dispersion at basic pH of a film-forming copolymer of an alkyl acrylate and of a vinylaromatic monomer, and an alkaline alkylsiliconate. This composition is prepared by mixing said dispersion of copolymer and an aqueous solution of alkaline alkylsiliconate. It is used to waterproof and protect various surfaces such as facades in hydraulic binders, tiles or wood, and may also contain fungicides and / or insecticides when used to flame retardant wood.
Description
- un polymere d'acrylate de butyle, ethyle ou methyle, ou un copolymere ~ base d'acide acrylique et/ou méthacrylique ou de leurs esters;
Il est egalement connu d'apr~s le brevet des Etats-Unis n 4.012.355 de proteger contre l'erosion la surface de matieres finement divisees, par trai~ement a 4 ~ 0 The subject of the present invention is compositions for water repellency and protection of various surfaces its such as fa ~ ades, tiles, wood etc ..., their process of preparation and their implementation for the ment of said surfaces.
- I1 is cDnnu after the ~ nae ~ ubliee of German patent No. 2,355,813, to use as a binder for the prepara-tion of exterior or interior pigmented coatings having improved resistance to water, a disper-aqueous solution containing:
- a polymer of butyl acrylate, ethyl or methyl, or a copolymer ~ based on acrylic acid and / or methacrylic or their esters;
- and from 2 to 5% by weight of the dispersion, of a silicone in aqueous phase, in particular methylsili-sodium conate.
It is also known from the patent of United States No. 4,012,355 to protect against erosion surface of finely divided materials, by treatment with
An. Phys. Soc. 1956, 1, 123.
acrylate de propyle varie de 36l64 a 52/48;

I.a présente invention vise également le procédé

It is particularly interesting that positions based on synthetic polymers used for the treatment of surfaces such as facades based on hydraulic binders, tiles ... present, in addition to water repellency properties, the characteristics following ticks:
b.
~ 994 ~ 0 - good filmogenesis - good UV stability - good stability in an alkaline medium, this is a say to be slightly viscous and not saponifying in an alkaline medium, in particular at a pH greater than 10.
It has been found that polymers containing carboxylic units derived from mono- or di-carbo-ethylenic xylics for example are to be excluded in because of their poor stability in an alkaline environment.
The Applicant has found that the copolymers of styrene-alkyl acrylate type dispersed within a stable aqueous medium at alkaline pH, have the characteristics teristics above sought and can be combined with a significant amount of water repellency greater than that present in the compositions based of prior art alkyl acrylate copolymers.
The Applicant has found a stable composition during storage:
- easily applicable on facades based on hydraulic binders by conventional methods (roller, pneumatic gun O ..) composition, which after drying forms a film presenting the characteristics ticks of adhesion and resistance to ultra-violet acrylic resins, the surface properties of silicone resins and allowing water repellency improved fronts.
- and also capable of waterproofing and treating wood on the surface and in depth.
The composition which is the subject of the invention contains an aqueous dispersion of an acrylic copolymer te of alkyl and an alkali alkylsiliconate, said com-position being characterized in that:
- the aqueous dispersion consists of a film-forming copolymer of alkyl acrylate and of a mono-vinyl aromatic pool dispersed in an environment 94 ~ 0 aqueous stable at basic pH, said vinyl aromatic monomer that being such that the homopolymer corresponding to said vinyl aromatic monomer has a transition point glassy between 70 and 170C.
- the amount of alkali alkylsiliconate present is 0.05 to 0.17 moles of alkylsiliconate per 100 g of dry copolymer, the corresponding elementary entity at the term "mole" being the group:
lo I o C3 - l - if - o Alkyl i As an example of a vinyl aromatic monomer, cite styrene and methylstyrenes.
The alkyl acrylates which can be used are those whose corresponding homopolymer has a glass transition point between + 10C and Mention may be made of alkyl acrylates, the alkyl group contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and preferably from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
The respective amounts of vinyl aroma monomer tick and alkyl acrylate to be used are chosen in such a way that the copolymer obtained has a glass transition point between - 5C and ~ 25C.
The amounts of monomers to be used are dependent on tion of the nature of said comonomers and the temperature Glass transition rature of the desired copolymer.
Said quantities can be easily determined by applying for example the formula of FOX given in Bull. An. Phys. Soc. 1956, 1, 123.
Thus: - a styrene-acrylate copolymer of ~ ethyl prësen-te a varying glass transition point ~ L99 ~ ~ 0 between 0C and 20 ~ C when the styrene ratio ethyl acrylate varies between 2617 ~ and ~ 5155, - a styrene-acr ~ late propyl copolymer pre--feels a varying glass transition point between 0C and 20C when the styrene /
propyl acrylate ranges from 3664 to 52/48;
polystyrene having a glass transition point of + 100C, the polyacrylate of -24C and the poly--37C propyl acrylate.
Glass transition point values indicated are those measured according to the so-called method "Differential scanning calorimetry" described for example by A. Lambert in "Polymer 10, 319, 1969".
The aqueous dispersions of mono- copolymers aromatic vinyl and alkyl acrylate are obtained by aqueous emulsion polymerization of said monomers in a stable medium at alkaline pH.
Said polymerization medium further comprises said monomers, an aqueous phase and various adjuvants emulsion polymerization classes (catalysts, emulsifiers ... ~ the latter being chosen from those which are stable in an alkaline environment.
We can cite as an example of catalysts:
organic hydroperoxides such as those of cumene, 25 diisopropylben ~ ene, paramenthane, persulfates such than those of sodium, potassium or ammonium.
Among the emulsifiers which may be present, may include anionic agents such as: salts fatty acids, alkylsulfates, alkylsulfonates, arylsulfates, arylsulfonates, alkylarylsulfates, alkylarylsulfonates, sulfosuccinates, alkylphos-alkali metal pates; non-ionic agents such than polyethoxylated fatty alcohols, alkylphenolpoly-ethoxylated, polyethoxylated fatty acids.
The aqueous dispersion of monomer copolymer 11 ~ 94 ~ 0 vinyl aromatic and allcyl acrylate may contain 20 to 60 ~ by weight of dry matter and preferably 40 to 55% by weight of dry matter, with a diameter of particles between 0 ~ 05 and 0.5 ~ m.
Said dispersion could possibly be diluted according to the nature of the surface to be treated.
Alkaline alkylsiliconates which can enter the water-repellent compositions which are the subject of the invention vention, are those having a C1-C3 alkyl group.
The preferred amount of alkylsiliconate can be implemented is 0.065 to 0.1 mole of alkylsiliconate per 100 g of dry copolymer.
The alkylsiliconates preferably used work ~ are:
- the. sodium methylsiliconate at 4.8 a 16.3 parts by weight of dry methylsiliconate, and - preferably 6.4 to 9.8 parts, per 100 parts by weight dry copolymer, - potassium methylsiliconate is 5.6 has 19 parts by weight of dry methylsiliconate, and preference from 7.44 to 11.4 parts, for 100 parts in weight of copolymer.
The water-repellent composition which is the subject of the invention may also contain various additives such as only pigments, anti-foaming agents (of the oil type dimethylpolysiloxanique) in order to avoid the formation foam following a mechanical agitation nique and in particular unsuitable coalescing agents collapsible such as ethylene monobutyl ether glycol or diethylene glycol, the phenyl ether of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or dipropylene glycol, or "white spirit" type products with a low content of aromatic compounds, in order to if necessary lower the minimum temperature for film tion of the vinyl aromatic monomer copolymer ~ 1 ~ 94 ~ 0 and alkyl acrylate. The qualities of said agents of coalescence to implement pourron.t be of around 3 to 4 parts by weight per 100 parts in weight of dispersion. said copolymer.
As the Applicant has already indicated, the ingredients waterproofing compositions which are the subject of the invention are especially well suited to hydrofu ~ ation of wood.
"Wood" is understood to mean solid wood as well that wood derivatives - such as chips, wood chips, plywood, glued-laminated structures, panels fibers or particles and miscellaneous composite articles a based on cellulosic materials.
For this particular application, said water-repellent compositions may also contain up to 7 ~ of the total weight of said compositions of wood protective active ingredient of the fungicidal type and any insecticide.
Fungicides that may be present can be chosen from among those usually used treat wood against attack by fungi, mold and rot. For exemple insecticides include: halogenated derivatives of phenol, such as for example tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol; metallic salts, in particular of copper, manganese, cobalt, chromium, zinc, acid derivatives carboxylic acids such as for example heptanolic acids, octanoic and naphthenic; the organic complexes of tin, such as for example bis-tributyl oxide tin, fluoride, phosphate, benzoate or acetate tributyltin tate, methylene-bisthiocyanate; the mercaptobenzothiazole; dichlofluanid (N-dichloro-fluoromethylthio-N ', N'-dimethyl-N-phenylsulfamide).
They can be present in quantities that can go ~ until 5 ~ by weight relative to the weight of the treatment composition; this quantity is good ~ 1994 ~ 0 heard depending on the activity of the fungicide (s) in action.
Eventually present insecticides can be chosen from among those usually used for treat wood against wood-eating insects. We can by way of example, mention orano-halogenated compounds, such as for example DDT (dichloro diphenyl tricllloro-ethane), methoxychlor (dimethoxy diphenyl trichlo-roethane), lindane (isomer of hexach] .orocyclo-hexane), chlordane (octachlorohexahydro methano indene), aldrin (endo he, ~ achloro hexahydrodimethano - naphthalene), toxaphene; organophosphorus compounds, such as for example diethion (O, O, O ', O'-tetraethyl S, S'-methylenedithiophosphate), parathion (O, O-diethyl-paranitrophenylthiophosphate), phosalone (O, O-diethyl 3-dithiophosphorylmethyl-6-chloro-benzoxazolone); of carbamates, such as for example sevin (N-methyl-naphthyl caxbamate), carbofuran (N-methylcarbamate dimethyldihydrobenzofurannyl); pyrethroids synthetic, such as for example decamethrin (~ -cyano phenoxybenzyl dibromovinyl dimethylcyclopropane ca ~ boxylate), permethrin (phenoxybenzyl cis-trans dimethyl dichlorovinyl cyclopropane carbo, ~ ylate), the fenvalerate (~ -cyano phenoxybenzyl chlorophenyl methyl-butylbutyrate).
They can be present in quantities that can go up to 2% by weight relative to the weight of the treatment composition; this quantity is well understood depending on the activity of the fonqici.des implemented.
A particularly interesting active ingredient is formed by the association (for 100 parts in weight ~ e mat; .èreactive) of:

A particular type of liquid concentrate well suited is this] .ui described in the patent application French published under N. 2. ~ 98. ~ 19; he understands, for 100 parts by weight of concentrated:
- from 15 to ~ 0 parts by weight of active material, - from 30 to 75 parts by weight of solvent (s) the active ingredient - from 0 to 20 parts by weight of oil (s) and / or fixing agent (s) _ 9 _ ~ 9 ~ a4 '~
- from 5 to 25 parts by weight of emulsified aaenti-onior anior.ique surfactant.
I. the surfactants entering the composition sition of said liquid concentrate are chosen from:
a) sulfuri estes of formula (Oc ~ l2cH2) n-oso3M (I) in which:
. the substituent R represents a radical, saturated carbon C; U unsaturated, which may contain sea one or more heteroatoms, of origin aliphatic (linear or branched), cycloali-phatiaue GU a ~ omatic;

the substituent R and n have the meanings given above in formula (I);
. Rl represents either a residue Ml, or one radicals R- (OCH2CH2) n-, the radicals ~ R

Preferably these are chosen from those corresponding to formulas I and II in which:
the substitutant R represents: a radical linear or branched alkyl, containing from 1 with 20 carbon atoms, possibly substituted by one or more alkoxy radicauc with 1 to 5 carbon atoms or phenyl radicals; a radical al]; ylcarbonyle whose alkyl residue meets the die: Einition given above; a cycloalkyl radical containing 5 to 8 carbon atoms, even partially replaced as indicated above for the radical al] cvle, an aklylphé radical nyle of which the linear or branched alkyl residue contains from 1 to 20 atoms of carhone;
M (formula I) is an ammonium residue or a alkali metal atom, Ml (formula II) is a hydrogen atom, a residue of ammonium or a metal atom a] .calin.
By ammonium residue is meant a compound of Formula: N (R2 ~ 3R ~ R5) in lacquer]. 4 '~) The total number of carbon atoms in the remaining ammonium is less than or equal to 6.
In this preferred group of emulsifiers, the surfactants of formulas (I) and (II) in which:

A titre d'exemple d'agents adhésifs propres à

* (Marque de commerce) 1~99~ ~
d'extrait sec de 50 % environ et une température minimale de formation de film de 16C environ;

The present invention also relates to utili.s ~ tion (] c] a co! npoC.;. tioll ci-dc.ssu.s clccr; .tc poul- lc hydrofuc3ation treatment of various surfaces of the type facades by linking hydraulically, tiles, wood.
1199 ~ ~ 0 The treatment of facades and tiles can be realized in a particularly simple way by application of said composition as is or after dilution in water, using a paint roller or by spraying using a pneumatic gun.
The amounts of composition to be deposited on these surfaces to obtain good water repellency and protection tion are generally of the order of 20 to 80 g / m2. The treated support acquires very water-repellent properties quickly about an hour after application.
I, es methods of application on the wood of water-repellent composition optionally containing a active fungicide and / or insecticide used are those usually used for wood treatment and its derivatives for example dipping, whitewashing ge, vacuum autoclave impregnation processes and / or pressure. A well-suited process is what is said by double vacuum.
The quantity of said compositions used for treating the wood depends on the method of impregnation chosen ;.
So when the impregnation is carried out by soaking, the quantity of composition used expressed in g of total composition per m2 of surface to be treated, is from about 50 to 300 g / m2. When this is done made by brushing on the surface, a quantity of sition of the order of 20 to 80 g / m2 is sufficient. When-that the impregnation is carried out in an autoclave under double empty, a quantity of composition of the order of 8 to 40 kg / m3 is Favorable.
The following examples are given as examples.
catif and cannot be considered as a limit of scope and spirit of the invention.

Storage behavior of the composition thus prepared /
There is no change in viscosity after 1 year of storage at room temperature.
_ability in alkaline medium The composition prepared in Example 5 is brought to 40C for a month.
We observe that:

- its viscosity has not changed - the level of saponified butyl acrylate, expressed in% by weight relative to the weight of acrylate butyl is less than 0.1% (measurement made by dosing butanol released).
Water-repellent property of the film This property is determined by measuring connection angle 0 in degrees of water droplets deposited on the surface of the test sample (glass), according to the method described in -Physical Surfaces by JJ
BIRKERMAN - Academic Press NY 1970 p. 251.
The results of this measurement are shown in table I.
Example 7 A composition similar to that of Example 5 replaced it, ant the aqueous dispersion of copo-styrene-butyl acrylate polymer by dispersion aqueous analog of styrene-ethyl acrylate copolymer presenting:
. a styrene / ethyl acrylate ratio of: al ~ 59 . an amount of dry extract of: about 50%
. a minimum formation temperature of movie of: around 16C
The properties of this composition are shown 25 in Table I.
Comparative Examples 8 to 11 A composition is prepared containing:
- 100 parts by weight of an aqueous dispersion of a terpol. styrene-butyl acrylate-acrylic acid.
that having a weight ratio styrene / debutyl acrylate / acrylic acid close to 47/49 / ~, a quantity dry extract of about 50% and a minimum temperature film formation of about 16C;
- and a quantity appearing in Table I, expressed ~ 994 ~ 0 partly by weight of the aqueous methylsili-potassium conate described in Examples 1-5.
The properties of this composition are shown in Table I. It can be seen that such a composition is difficult to use or even unusable for the desired application, due to its too large viscosity.

- that the platelets treated with silicone show slight washout on cycle c);
- that the platelets treated with the composition subject of the invention not only do not show washout in cycle c) but show further improved water repellency;
- that within the limits of experimentation, the influence of the dry extract concentration of the water-repellent composition, on water uptakes, seems not very sensitive.
The water repellency test described in Example 13, using a hydro-runaway containing 15 parts of methylsili-potassium conate instead of 10 parts, said compound sition containing a sufficient amount of water to hold a quantity of dry extract of 4%.
The results of the waterproofing test are shown in Table II.
It can be seen that the water repellency obtained is improved compared to that obtained in Example 2.
EXAMPLE 15 Preparation of the water-repellent composition.
Mixed for 100 g of total composition:
- 8.25 ~ by weight of a hydrofu- dispersion giant containing 48.5% of dry extract and prepared for from :
. 100 parts of styrene / acrylate latex butyl used in Examples 12 and 13;
U
. 10 parts of methylsilicona-te solution used in examples ~ 12 and 13;
. 3.5 parts of butyldiglycol . and 0.15 part of RHODORSIL 416 (market of trade).
- 9% in polds of a pre-emulsifiable concentrate ready from . 27, 3 parts by weight of pentachlorophenol . 4.8 parts by weight of lindane . 22.7 parts of orthodichlorobenzene . 25.8 parts of hexylene glycol . 8.1 parts of rosin ester and penta-erythrol marketed by the so-called Derivative Company ~ ésini-ques and Terpéniques under the name DERTOLINEP (mar-trade);
. 11.3 parts of an emulsifier of formula:
CH3- (cH2) ll-cH2- (ocH2cH2) 3-Os03NH4 - and 82.75% by weight of water, which corresponds to about :
. 4% dry extract of water-repellent dispersion;
. 2% pentachlorophenol, . and 0.4% lidane per 100 g of composition total.
The water-repellent composition thus prepared is stable under normal conditions of use.
Water repellency test Scots of Scots pine, presenting a section of 5 x 5 cm and a length of 30 cm are immersed for 3 minutes in the above composition prepared.
The average absorption is close to 30 kg / m.
. cy ~ le of re ~ rises of water_ The test pieces are air dried for 4 11994 '~ 0 days, immersed in water for 2 hours and then rees.
The water uptake observed is 12%.
The result of the same test carried out on untreated test pieces is 2n%.
. wash cycle The test pieces are then dried for 1 week in the air, immersed in water for 2 hours then wrung out.
The water recovery of the treated test pieces is 8%.
That of untreated test specimens is 25%.
Fonicide test We submit samples of Scots pine on the other hand and beech on the NF X 41-552 test corresponding to conforming to European Standard EN 113 which provides a basis appreciation of a wood preservative product be the lignivorous basidiomycete fungi.
It can be seen that the test specimens treated with of the above composition have losses of average mass less than 3% when exposed attacked by:
. coniophora puteana . coriolus versicolor . poria placenta . gloeophyllum trabeum . ~
