Abstract
Patente de Invenção: <B>''USO DO BLOQUEADOR DO CANAL DE SóDIO NA FABRICAçãO DE UM MEDICAMENTO PARA A PREVENçãO DA DEGENERAçãO DO NERVO óPTICO ASSOCIADA AO GLAUCOMA''<D>. Método e composição para alterar uma seq³ência plausível de eventos patológicos em células do gânglio retiniano associados ao glaucoma, a seq³ência incluindo a despolarização da membrana, o influxo de quantidades milimolares de Na^ +^ através de canais de Na^ +^ não-inativáveis, e a elevação letal de Ca^ 2+^ celular devido à reversão do trocador de Na^ +^. O método inclui o bloqueio, por administração de uma composição selecionada, dos canais de Na^ +^ não-inativáveis associados a células do gânglio retiniano, para limitar a troca de Na^ +^/Ca^ 2+^ nas células do gânglio retiniano e evitar a elevação do nível de Ca^ 2+^ nas células do gânglio retiniano a um nível letal. Isso resulta em um método para prevenir a morte de células do gânglio retiniano, associada ao glaucoma, pela administração ao nervo óptico de um mamífero de um composto que bloqueie os canais de íon sódio não-inativáveis do nervo óptico.
