<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Toutefois,
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

projectile with deformable parts for firearms
The present invention relates to projectiles for firearms of the type comprising a bulging rear part of the type such that it can be reduced in diameter as a result of its passage through the barrel with converging core of the fen weapon.
Thanks to this bulging rear part, a greater surface area of the explosive force is achieved than if the projectile had the same diameter as the barrel of the firearm. This results in a greater propelling force of the projectile and, consequently, a greater forward speed than in normal projectiles of uniform diameter.
Projectiles of this type are, as can be seen, extremely satisfactory in general, but they show a tendency for the bullet nose of the projectile to move with respect to the longitudinal axis of the barrel of the pen- dant their passage in it, in which case the trajectory of t ir of the small sabir projectile .ne unfortunate influence.
An object of the present invention is to create an improved projectile in which this tendency to move its nose
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
warhead relative to the axis of the barrel of the firearm is suppressed.
The intention is materialized in a projectile having two deformable parts having a diameter greater than that of the main body of the projectile, these deformable parts being arranged in the length called the projectile, the front deformable part at least being shaped to delimit an annular space between it and a sleeve or core.
Thanks to this Indisposition, the deformable part placed at the rear receives the force of the explosion, and the deformable part placed at the front ensures the centering of the bullet nose of the projectile during its passage through the barrel of the firearm. . The rear deformable part may have a flange directed outwards and backwards.
The two deformable parts can be established and disposed such that their deformation causes a shift of their centers of gravity in opposite directions in the longitudinal direction of the main body part.
These displacements of the centers of gravity and of the masses of the deformable parts are preferably chosen such that the center of gravity of the projectile considered as a whole is deflected as little as possible. This arrangement is particularly important when the projectile is to be fired from a barrel of relatively steep taper. In fact, in such a case, the accelerations occurring on the centers of gravity of the deformable parts can generate considerable forces which tend to separate the various components of the projectile from one another. The joining of these various elements is necessary for the same reason.
In the accompanying drawings: -
Figs. 1 to 6 are longitudinal section views of the projectile.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 7 is a top view of some separated part of the projectile shown in Fig. 6.
Figs. 8 to 14 are longitudinal sectional views of other embodiments of the projectile.
In the first construction, the core 10 to which is attached a bullet ballistic cap 11 carrying a screw connecting member 12 is provided at its front end with a portion 13 of smaller diameter than that of the portion 14 forming the main body. This part 13 carries a deformable part comprising a ring 15 which rests against the shoulder 16 formed between the two parts 13 and 14 of the core, and a thin part 17 forming a skirt extending towards the rear from the core. 'ring 15. The wall of this thin part 17 has a V-shape in longitudinal section and is integral with the ring 15. A small cut 9 is provided between the ring 15 and the base of the ballistic cap 11. The skirt
17 extends only over a portion of the swollen part 14 of the core 10.
Part 14 of this core has towards its posterior end a certain taper 18 directed outwards, then a circular part 19 of reduced diameter which thus provides a stop shoulder 20 against which the end face of a second rests. deformable part 21. This is shaped to provide a space 22 forming a liner is cylindrical in shape over part of its length, as indicated at 23 ,, then conical outwards, as indicated at 24 and again cylindrical at ¯85} it is definitively provided with a collar 26 which is relatively thick and directed towards the interior which rests against the end face 27 of the circular portion 19 of reduced diameter of the core.
The force of the explosion acting against the rear deformable part is supported by the stop shoulder 20
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and by the end face 27 to the core * The effective length of this second deformable part is comparatively small, which, considered at the same time as the two surfaces which resist the forces due to the explosion, allows the wall of the jacket to 'be made comparatively thin, so that the weight of the deformable part can be kept at a minimum value. This is an important consideration in the manufacture of projectiles intended to perforate armor.
The second deformable part which is directed towards the rear can be fixed to the core of the projectile by a pin implanted in the front cylindrical part of the latter. Or a thread engagement can be provided at this point. Neither of these two editing methods is represented. The object of this arrangement is to prevent the deformable portion from being forced away from the core during or after its passage through the conical wall barrel of the weapon. The deformable front part is prevented from moving rearward by the presence of the shoulder 16 located between the two parts of the core.
Instead of the rear part of the core being tapered outwards, as shown at 18 towards the shoulder 20, a ring may be provided at this location measuring an outer diameter equal to the maximum diameter of the tapered parts.
The core is formed by a hard and resistant steel alloy, and the ballistic cap 11 by a light and relatively soft aluminum alloy, or else by a synthetic resinous material. The deformable front part can be oonstituée by an alloy of copper and nickel or by a low carbon steel. It should be noted that, in this construction 3t in those which are described below, the deformable parts are mounted on either side of the center of gravity of the core. Moreover, thanks to the cut 9, the deformable front part moves slightly towards the front of the core during the collapse.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
ment, while the rear part extends towards the rear.
Thus, during deformation, their centers of gravity move in opposite directions along the second axis of the projectile, and the Basses of the parts which actually undergo sag as well as the amplitude of their movement along the projectile. of this axis are calculated so that the center of gravity of the projectile considered as a whole is only slightly modified, if it is. The rear deformable part may be made of a low carbon alloy, and the constructions shown in the other figures may be made of like materials, except where these are indicated as being different.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the two deformable parts have shapes similar to those indicated above, but they are joined by a tread 28 which surrounds the wall of the core. Thanks to this arrangement, the core does not need to be provided with a shoulder to ensure the positioning of the front deformable part. The rear end of the core is hollowed out by a circumferential channel 29 in which is embedded an internal rib 30 integral with the sleeve 28.
The rear deformable part has a flange 8 extending outwardly and rearwardly. and the end of the sleeve 28 is closed by a wall 1 having a flat conical internal face 6 which bears against a conical depression formed at the end of the core, a small cavity 5 being formed between the surfaces.
The front end of the core can have a streamlined profile, as shown at 4, and the ballistic cap 11 can be secured to it by a soft weld or by some other means.
It may be desirable to use a core having a comparatively small diameter, and in order to achieve the necessary speed, a larger area must be provided for the deformable part than that which can collapse on such a core. of small dimensions during the passage of the projectile through the firearm. To allow a relatively small diameter bore and a large area deformable part, it can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
There is provided a sleeve made of a comparatively light material (ie, lighter than that which can be used to constitute the deflected parts) at least of the front deformable part and the core.
A similar arrangement is shown in fig.3. In this figure, the ballistic cap 11 has a sleeve 70 of smaller diameter than the larger part of the cap 11. This sleeve extends towards the rear; it has an inwardly directed wire reruvre which is embedded in a circumferential channel 72 of the core. The rear deformable part is machined separately from the front part 17 but is secured to the end of the knot, in a manner similar to that described in fig.2. However, the end face of the core is flat and bears against a flat face 6.
An outer sleeve 73 surrounds the inner sleeve 70 between the front and rear deformable parts; it measures a length such that it leaves a cut 74 between the end at both the front deformable part and a shoulder 75 marking the projection between the ballistic cap 11 and the sleeve 70 which has the smallest diameter.
The embodiment shown in fig.4 is quite similar to that shown in fig.2. The core is provided here at its front end with a pointed ogive 31 and provided with a cylindrical part 32 around which is the deformable part before 17. The core which has a taper towards the interior, as shown at 33, comprises at its end a stingray 34 delimiting a cylindrical portion 35 of smaller caliber.
The front deformable part 17 is connected to the flange directed towards the rear and towards the outside by a sleeve 28, the shape of which allows it to bear against a portion of the front cylindrical part 32 of the core, the conical part 33, then the cylindrical shank portion 35, it is then provided with a directed collar 36
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
towards the inside which overhangs the end of this cylindrical part 35. The sleeve 28 is held in place on the core by means of an axial bolt 37 whose head 38 is housed in the flange 36 and whose threaded part 39 is screwed into a tapped hole in the end of the node.
As indicated above, the fact that lesdeux deformable parts are joined by a sleeve balances to a certain extent the forces which are generated by the lowering of the deformable parts and consequently simplifies their attachment to the core. In addition, it reduces the weight of metal required by the deformable part.
The corner sleeve portion is between the two deformable portions is provided with an outer cylindrical surface 40 with a shallow cylindrical core 41 which extends a portion of its length.
As shown in fig. 5, the sleeve can be closed at 42 at its outer end and, instead of being fixed to the core by a bolt, it can be provided with a rod 43 st extending forward and engaged in a recess 44 of the end of the core. This recess ends in unecreusure circula ire 45, and the rod 43 is provided with an axial channel 46 in which a tapered pin 47 can be pushed in. The rod 43 has a projection 48 which is initially located away from the recess 45 but which is driven into the latter as a result of the passage of the town 47 in the channel 46.
The thickness of the collar 8 gradually decreases towards its post-end.
The projectile shown in fig.6 comprises a core 50 provided with the usual warhead 51. The rear end of this core is surrounded by a part 52 of the rear deformable member which may be made of mild steel or of an alloy of copper and nickel or a low carbon steel, while the other part extends beyond the end

of the core and has a portion 53 which is firstly conical inwardly, then flared outwardly, as one approaches its rear end. Thanks to this arrangement, a recess is made at 5 for the air trapped when the part 53 collapses.
The end of this part 53 is provided with a cylindrical part 54 having two steps and measuring its smaller diameter at its rear end, the two steps were separated by a small circumferential groove 55 in which the front edge of the projectile case can be crimped. The face 68 of the deformable part which bears against the terminal wall of the core is flat and has a central depression 56.
The part of this deformable member which surrounds the core has a comparatively thick wall 57 with respect to the part of the core mentioned last and, beyond that, a part of smaller diameter leaving a shoulder 58, finally at its end a projecting collar 59 leaving a groove 60 between it and the shoulder. A sleeve 61 is provided around the core 50; it is provided at its front end with a ballistic cap 62 and at its rear end with a shoulder 64.
This sleeve may be made of an aluminum alloy and its gaping posterior end may be initially provided with a flared mouth (as shown in fig. 7) which is then contracted so that an internal circumferential rib 81 is formed. folded into the groove 60 between this flange and the shoulder of the rear deformable part, in order to fill it completely and ensure an invariable mutual blocking of the two parts by entanglement.
The front part of the sleeve is of smaller diameter at 63 to provide a groove for housing a deformable drive belt 65 which may be made of mild steel, cupro-nickel or steel. low carbon. This

The drive belt protrudes from the groove to provide a shoulder 69. It is advantageous to arrange the posta * ieure end of the drive belt 65 so that it easily sags inward. It can be shaped for this purpose so as to initially provide a narrow cut 63 between it and the sleeve.
61, as shown in the figure.
As a variant, the posterior end face of the belt 65 may be hollowed out with a groove 84, as shown at the bottom of the figure. ilµ front deformable part 66 surrounds the sleeve 61 between the shoulders 64 and 69; it has a shape and dimensions such that it can sag in the space between its shoulder mounted. Suitable holes 67 are provided for the escape of air, or a lubricant may be initially placed in the liner space.
The arrangement shown in FIG. 8 is quite similar to that which has just been described with regard to FIG. 6, in that the extension 61 of the ballistic cap 62 is endoevered with the deformable rear part.
However, in this case, the rear end of the sleeve 61 has a circumferential groove in which is embedded an internal rib 76 integral with the rear deformable part. In addition, the front deformable part 66 and an attached external sleeve 77 are arranged between a shoulder 78 formed at the junction between the ballistic cap and the sleeve 61 and a projecting part 79 of the rear deformable part.
The embodiment shown in fig.9 is also quite similar to that shown in fig.6. However,
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
in this example, the ballistic cap 62 is not integral with the sleeve 61 but is fixed to it by the mutual engagement of the threaded parts 80. It will be noted that the parts 59 and 60 engaged one in the other are arranged. beyond the end of the core 50, while the shoulder 64 extends considerably further forward.
A simple embodiment of the projectile suitable for test shots is shown in fig. 10. In this case, the pointed nose 85, the parts 86 and 87 of the body of the projectile and its rear deformable part 88 form a single unit assembly made of low carbon steel. A suitable groove is formed between the pointed nose 85 and the part 86 to receive the guide belt 65, while the front deformable part 66 is arranged between a shoulder 69 formed by the drive belt and the shoulder 64. formed between parts 86 and 87 of the body.
In fig.11, the invention is shown in its application to an explosive projectile. The construction is similar to that shown in Fig.9 in that the pointed nose 62 is screwed onto the body part 61. However, the core is here omitted, so as to provide a space 89 receiving the explosive, and the rear eformable part 53 forms an integral part of the body. As can be seen, the space 89 gradually decreases in cross section towards the rear part of the projectile. The nose cone 62 is provided with a suitable recess 90 receiving a rocket 91.
In fig. 12 is also shown an explosive projectile which differs from that shown in fig.ll in that the part 53 formed tail comprises a sleeve 92 into which a tracing composition is introduced, and in that
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
the front end of the deformable part 66 is provided with a sleeve 93 with a rib directed inwardly which engages in a circumferential groove of the casing 61. A sleeve 9 of aluminum alloy is arranged. between a shoulder 95 integral with this casing and the front face of the rib of the sleeve 93. The spindle 91 is fixed to the casing by a threaded portion 96 made of aluminum alloy.
The explosive projectile shown in Fig. 13 is more similar to the projectile intended to perforate armor plating shown in Fig. 8, in that its tail 53 is fixed to the casing 61 by a rib 76 folded inwards and that a sleeve 77 is disposed between it and the deformable part 66. The fuze 91 is designed to mount directly on the shell of the projectile.
In one or the other of the arrangements shown in s figs. 13 and 14, the tail part of the projectile is made of a ductile metal as mild steel, and its shell 61 of high strength steel.
In either of the arrangements described above, an armor piercing cap can be interposed between the core and the ballistic cap.
The same arrangements may find their application in other types of projectiles.
