<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO COMBINED MADHINES TO TRAIN AND CONFORM
CIGAR DOLLS ".
The present invention relates to oombi machines for forming and shaping oigarea dolls. Its main object is novel means for automatically removing a cover from one of the doll shaping pockets of a cigar doll shaping machine, and for simultaneously introducing a cigar doll from the rolling table into the pocket. of a machine for forming the cigar dolls, so that said machines are thus combined into one. To this end, the invention consists of certain constructions and combinations of members described in detail below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
When using two separate machines operated independently of each other to form and shape the cigar cuts, it is necessary to transfer by hand the rolled feed from the rolling table to the forming machine. routed into one of the pockets of the turret to form the coupes, an operation which is frequently performed unsatisfactorily, even by an experienced operator.
The new means described below for removing the lids and transporting the poués not only make it possible not to have recourse to an onator, but also to properly nlaaer the nunea in the conformation rock so that one thus obtains better shaped cigars.
These new means consist of the combination of two vertically oscillating transnort arms, which receive the noupée from the rolling table and bring it into the desired position for it to be subsequently processed, - two positioning elements which close on the pounpée when it is in the nosition indicated above, place it suitably in the transport arms, and make the ends of the said Doubt pointed, '- of a device which relieves the nounea placed in position, 4 and of a head oscillating horizontally, bringing two arms, and again turning on a shaft with vertical reciprocating movement, which receives the doll in a rock formed in the lower part of an arm lifts it,
then brings it opposite a conformation rock formed in the turret, lowers it to its po- ohe, and introduces it into the latter, while a slide, carried by the other arm and actuated by a cam, engages with the cover of said noche, secures it to said arm, lifts it, pushes it out of the way of the doll which is received,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to then bring it back into position and release it when the first arm returns to the doll receiving position.
In the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the automatic mechanism for removing the covers and transporting the dolls, this mechanism being arranged to receive a doll from the rolling table of a doll-forming machine and to bring it to the turret of a doll shaping machine.
Fig. 2 is an end view, looking from line 2-2 of FIG. 1.

Fig. 4 is a top view, taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 1, showing the relative position of the doll rolling table, the doll shaping turret, the cover removal and doll transport mechanism being shown in the position for receiving a doll.
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing said mechanism in the position for dispensing a doll.
In the implementation of the invention, there is provided: a device for winding a sub-wrapper around a load of tobacco in order to constitute a cigar doll, a turret rotating intermittently, comprising a series of dolls conformation poohes and a cover for each of these pockets, means for simultaneously removing a cover from one of said pockets and bringing in a doll
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
cigar above this rock, a mechanism to expel the pounée of the said means and bring it into the noche, a transport mechanism receiving a nounea of this device and bringing it to the said means.
In the preferred form of construction, these means comprise a head comprising two arms, means on one arm to receive the pounée, means on the other arm to engage with the cover, and means to lift, rotate, and lower said head. The construction of the devices and members mentioned above cannot be modified within wide limits without departing from the scope of the invention, since the particular machine chosen to describe the invention is only one of the many possible embodiments of the invention. the latter. The invention is therefore not limited to the Nréois details of the machine described and shown here.
By referring to the freezes. 1, 2 and 3, we see that the base 10 which unites the machine for rolling the @ pounées of oi- stations to the machines. conform the weight of cigars, bring a base 11 and a frame 12 snnnort.
On a shaft 13, mounted so as to rotate again in the mats 14 of the base 11, oscillate two pounée transnort arms 15, actuated, using a crank arm 16 and a connecting rod 17, nar a cam (not shown). These arms have the function of receiving the newly rolled Doubt from the rolling table of the machine to conform the pounées, and to bring it into the desired rosi- tion so that it is introduced into a noohe managed to. this effect in the lower part of the doll arm, described below, The ends receiving the weight of the arms 15 oomnortent a fixed jaw 18 and an elastic jaw 19 which is braided, nar a spring 20,
against one
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
adjustable clamping screw 21 screwed into the jaw 18, so that the spacing of the empty jaws can be adjusted to the desired degree, which spacing is a little smaller than the diameter of the headstock.
Vertical rods 22, guided in tabs 23 and 84 of the base 11 and actuated by a connecting bar 25, a link 26 and a lever 27, using another cam not shown, aotionnent the lifting device. doll 28, which consists of a base piece fixed to the upper ends of the rods 22 and carrying, on bent arms, a central block and two outer blocks which are concave to match the shape of the doll and are intended to remove the latter from the transport arm 15. Positioning elements 32 slide on horizontal rods 29 supported by a bloo 30, carried by an upright 31 of the soole 11.
The ends for positioning the doll of these elements 32 have tapered hollows, so as to make the ends of the doll unfinished when they close on the latter. The positioning elements 32 include projections 33, extending inwardly and against which the jaws 19 of the arms 15 rest in their position of dispensing the doll, these projections 33 serving as guides for the doll when it is lifted. transport arm by the lifting device. Said elements 32 have horizontal pins 34, through which they are actuated by levers 35 pivotally mounted on pins 36 of base 11.
The levers 35 are connected by a bar 37 and actuated by a rod 38, pivoting on a pin 39 carried by an arm 40 of so-called levers 35. The rod 38 is actuated by an oame (not shown).
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
A vertical shaft 43 is carried, so as to be able to slide, but without turning, by bearings 41 and 42 of the frame 12. A head 44 is mounted loose on this shaft 43 and carries two arms 45 and 46 perpendicular to each other. 'other. A fixed collar 4, mounted on the shaft 43, rests on the bearing 41.
When the collar 47 is in this position, another fixed collar 48 having a tapered protrusion forming the blade 49, extending radially in the direction of a turret 81, rests on the head 44 which is brought up in its lowest ros- tion by. one closed two tightening screws 50.50 'nar of the radial projections 51 of the head 44 and resting on a horizontal projection of a guide bar 52, introduced into the frame of sunnort 12 (see figs. 1, 4 and 5 ).
Thus, when the shaft 43 is lifted by the rod 53, actuated by a cam (not shown) and pivotally connected to the shaft 43 by the joints 54 and 55 connected by a pin 56, it will immediately lift. first the collar 48 of the head 44, and then, after the collar 47 has come into contact with the lower part of the head 44, he will lift the latter with his arms 45 and 46.
The head 44 carries, by means of radial mats 57, a vertical rod 58 with which engages a part in the form of a fourohe 59, carried so as to rotate again, by an arm of an angled lever 60 pivoting on an axis 67 shown in the support frame 12, and held in place by a collar 62. The other arm 63 of the lever 60 is connected, by a pin 64, to a rod 65 created by a cam (not shown). lever 60 from one position to the other, the fork-shaped piece 59 rotates the head 44 90 degrees, thereby bringing the arm 45 into the rosette previously occupied by the arm 46, and vice versa.
In order to bring these arms, exactly in coincidence with the positioning element in position of the headstock and with the mold of the turret,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
respeotively, the projections 51 of the head 44 are provided with adjustable rollers 66 which, in the extreme horizontal positions of the head 44, engage with one side or the other of the bar 52 and guide the head in its movement towards - tioal. The rollers 66 are secured to the head with eccentric pins 67, so that the amplitude of the horizontal movement of the head 44 can be exactly controlled.
All the cams used to determine the various movements of the transport mechanism are actuated in synchronism with the machines for forming and shaping the cigar dolls, machines whose controls are interconnected.
The arm 45 carries, at its lower part, a pocket 68 formed by slightly spaced walls and having cavities for receiving the cigar doll which is brought in the positioning elements 32 in said pocket by the device. lifting 28, and, is maintained in the pocket by the friction and pressure of said walls.
The arm 45 has, at its upper part, a boss 69 in which are guided two vertical broohes 70 joined together at their upper ends, nar a stirrup 71 held in its raised position by a spring 72. On the stirrup 71 rests a roller. 73, carried by a bxas of an angled lever 74 driving on a spindle 75 supported by lugs 76 of the head 44. The other arm of the lever 74 carries a roller 77, intended to engage with the tapered projection forming the core 49 of the collar 48, when the arm 45 is in the dispensing position of a doll, as shown in FIG. 5.
When this engagement takes place, during the descent of the shaft 43 relative to the head 44, while the latter is supported by the clamping screw 50, the lever 74 is brought, by a movement of

rotation, in nosition 74 "(fig. 2), and the roller 73 lowers the caliper 71 to bring it to the 7l" position, thus forcing the pins 70 to expel the cigar punch out of the pocket 68 .
The arm 46 comprises, at its lower part, two mats 78 having transverse grooves (fig. 1) with which the rollers 79 are intended to engage -norias nar the ends of each mold cover of the routed oonformation turret. 81 rotating intermittently, when each cover reaches its highest nosition.
Each cover has two projections 83 extending radially upwards and axially grooved (figs. 1 and 4).
46 and the arm comprises a longitudinal ooulisseau 84 norting two aligned projections 85 and 85 '. directed downwards and intended to engage in the axial grooves formed in the protrusions 83, under the action of a coil spring 86 attached, to a nart, to a pin 87 of the arm 46 and to the other wrongly, to a pin 88 of the ooulisseau 84.
In the lowest nosition of the shaft 43, the slide 84 is held out of engagement with the cover 80 by a lever 89 mounted on a spindle 90 carried by the mats 91 of the strip 44, and held in position. tion by a roller 92 coming in nrise, aveo the tapered projection forming the cam of the collar 48, when the arm 45 is in the position of reoention of a route, as shown in fig. 4.
When the roller 92 disengages from the tapered projection 49, during the upward movement of the shaft 43 relative to the head 44, the spring 86, thus released, forces the slide 84 to come into its engagement nosition 84 ' and thereby securing the cover 80 to the arm 46, as shown in FIG. 5 and as shown in unctuated lines in fig. 1.

The operation of the device is as follows:
When the turret rotates, the shaft 43 is in its lowest version, the clamping screw 50 of the head 44 rests on the guide bar 52, and the arms 45 and 46 are in their receiving positions) as shown in fig. 4, the roller 66 being in contact with the guide bar 52.
The upward movement of the rod 17 then forces the arms 15 to oscillate and come into their dispensing position 15 '. shown in figs. 1 and 2, in which the Doubt B, which was previously deposited in the jaws of these arms - as a belt 93, when the latter has reached its extreme position on the rolling table 94 due to the movement of a rolling member 95, comes to coincide with the positioning elements 32, such as the belt 93, the rolling table 94 of the rolling member 95 constitute members of a mechanism to form Its well known construction cigar figures , any further description of these elements is unnecessary.
The positioning elements 32 are then brought towards the cigar doll, in the position 32 'shown in unctuated lines in FIG. 2, by the action of the rod 38, thus making the ends of the cigar doll pointed and placing it in the desired position so that it easily enters the pocket 68 of the arm 45, the pocket in which the doll is then introduced by the movement of the lever 27 which causes the lifting device 28 to rise. While the lifting device 28 is in its lifted position, the rod 53 begins its upward movement, the shaft 43 rising from the start on its own, releasing the roller 92, which, in the receiving rosette of a headstock of the arms 45, 46, engages the projection 49, and thus securing the opener 80 to the arm 46.
Then tree 43 takes with it

the head 44, by means of the collar 47, the collar 48, when the shaft 43 is in its highest nosition 43 ', occupying the position 48' (fig. 1 and 2). As a result of this displacement of the rod 53, the arm 45 has reached the point 45 '(FIG. 2), the relative positions 71' and 74 'of the caliper 71 and of the lever 74 not being modified. Tensioning the upward movement of the head 44, the lifting device 28 descends, and the positioning elements 32 move away from each other to come into their original positions.
The rods 17 and 65 are then actuated, the former returning the arms 15 to their position for receiving a swing near the rolling table 94, and the rod 65 causing the arms 45 and 46 to oscillate. bring from the position shown in fig. 4 to that shown in fig. 5.
With the arms 45 and 46 in this latter position, in which the roller 66 is in contact with the bar 52, the rod 53 descends, first lowering the shaft 43 and the arms 45,46, so that the arm 45 is now in the dispensing no sition above the open mold pocket 80 of the turret (fig. 5) and then, when the set screw 50 'has come to rest on the guide bar 52, lowering the shaft 43 alone, so that the tapered projection 49 of the collar 48 which, in the dispensing position of the head 44 coincides with the arm 45, turns the lever 74 to bring it into the surface 74 "(fig. 2), thus lowering the caliper 71 into the no- tion 71 "and expelling the noupée from the rock 68 to bring it into the mold 80.
The descent of the shaft 43 has no effect on the roller 92, because the arm 46, in this nosition of the head 44, does not coincide with the tapered projection forming the cam 49.

The cigar pounée B having been introduced into the highest placed noohe of the turret mold, the shaft 43 rises again first of all on its own, thus lifting the collar.
48 of the head 44, so that the lever 74 is released and the ejector pins 70 are lifted by the spring
72, and then, when the oollier 47 has come to engage with the head 44, the shaft 43 goes up with the arms 45 and 46.
When it is in its highest position, and clears the oouverolea of the rocks formed from the molds, the arm 45 is brought back, by an oscillating movement, in the nosition of reception of a pounea, and the shaft 43 is lowered. By this oneration, the cover 80, which during the introduction of the cigar headstock B into the rock of the turret 80, has been kept out of the way by the arm 46, is brought back into position on the turret, the final movement of descent of the shaft 43 bringing the tapered projection 49 into engagement with the roller 92, thus freeing the cover from the arm.
This final movement of the shaft 43 has no effect on the lever 74 and on the arm 45, for the reason that the roller 77, in the distribution rosi- tion of a headstock of the arms 45,46, is found 90 degrees apart from the tapered protrusion 49.
While the cover is replaced on the cigar doll B which has just been inserted into the turret, the rolling member 95 '(which during the movement of the arms 15 inward and cranking the operation of the setting elements in position 32 and the lifting device 28, was stopped at the far end of the rolling table 94 to allow a new load to be measured by the cigar doll forming machine and to be deposited on the belt 93, and which makes the transport movement

dolls rolled this load into the form of a doll) drives the new doll into the jaws of the arms 15 and returns to its stop nosition at the far end of the rolling table 94.
