Therefore the diagnosing system can be applied with a suitable control unit (1) in a modular manner to steering systems supported by electrical motors which are currently being used.

  • the driver should, prior to initiating the failure diagnosing system, enter into a road which is empty enough for him/her to let loose the steering control and which is flat so that the measurements can be carried out accurately (101).
  • the control unit (1) controlling the vehicle via motor (2) drive sets the worm gear (7) to position "0" (zero) by using the position information received from the steering gear (6), worm gear (7) and motor position sensors (8) (103).
  • the control unit (1) disables the motor (2) and starts to monitor the movements of the worm gear (7) (104).
  • the control unit (1) turns off the failure diagnosing system immediately after the movement of the worm gear (7) ceases (106). The amount of deviation measured by the system, occurring due to rod out of adjustment or tire pressure differences, is saved by the control unit (1) (107).

Predetermined limit values and the warning messages corresponding to the said values are conveyed to the driver as an information message (109). By the help of this feature, it is ensured that the driver knows if the control unit (1) will contribute in active drive or not.
  • the driver moment sensor (9) can also be used to determine the moment to be used by the driver on the steering wheel when the failure diagnosing system is not operational, and the support to be provided on the steering column (5) for the driver, like in the steering systems supported by an electrical motor.
  • the control unit (1) functions in the logic of a position control unit and applies a current on the motor (2) to bring the worm gear (7) back to its "0" target position.
  • the control unit (1) can record the current value applied to the motor (2).
  • the said value is the force applied to the worm gear (7) by means of the motor gear (3) (112).
  • the said force is an additional moment that should be applied on the steering wheel (4) by the driver in normal conditions in order to keep the steering wheel (4) straight.
  • the said diagnosing and warning system for rod out of adjustments and the tire pressure differences can also be used during the maintenance of the vehicle in the service, on the arrangement turning the tires, by operating in the same logic. Additionally, the predetermined deviation amount information saved in the control unit (1) can be used when the technical service is fixing the rod out of adjustment.
