The invention relates to a method for separating crystalline graphite from a carbon-containing solid mixture, in particular blast furnace dusts.
Such a method is intended to produce crystalline graphite with a degree of purity above 99% or to determine the content of crystalline graphite in a carbon sample or in other carbon-containing solid mixtures with the greatest accuracy. The analysis results from the determination of crystalline graphite in blast furnace dusts allow conclusions to be drawn about the origin and the thermal stress of the carbon in the blast furnace.
According to common practice, the production of crystalline graphite in geological deposits, natural graphite containing starting material is used, the content of carbon (crystalline graphite and amorphous carbon) is 60 to 80%. For this purpose, the starting material is ground up and the mineral gait is separated off by flotation or by another common process, so that one contains graphite Receives material whose content of crystalline graphite and amorphous carbon is 70 to 98%. This proportion can be increased to 99.9% by chemical aftertreatment. Measures for separating the crystalline graphite from the amorphous carbon are, however, not known from this prior art.
Nachteilig ist weiter die erforderliche lange Temperzeit .Another manufacturing method is used to obtain high-purity synthetic graphite from amorphous carbon carriers, namely petroleum coke or soot. These carbon carriers have a high degree of purity of amorphous carbon. To produce crystalline graphite, it is annealed at temperatures above 2500 ° C for hours or weeks. Like the other manufacturing method, very high levels of purity cannot be achieved with this method. Another disadvantage is the long annealing time required.
To date, there is no method with which the content of crystalline graphite in a carbon sample or in other graphite-containing materials can be determined directly with high accuracy. With various known methods, e.g. by burning carbon-containing materials at a temperature of 815 ° C in air and then infrared detection of the resulting carbon dioxide in the combustion gas or by means of emission spectral analysis by spark excitation, only the carbon content in the carbon-containing starting material can be determined, but not the amount of crystalline graphite. The determination of the is also possible with the known X-ray diffractometry method Crystalline graphite content not possible in a carbon-containing sample. With this method only the degree of crystallinity of the carbon of a pure carbon sample can be determined.
Methods for the treatment of graphite with completely different objectives are known from the patent literature. In a known method (DE 199 10 707 AI), a pressure gradient is applied to a graphite bed or a graphite suspension in such a way that the graphite bed or the graphite suspension moves from a first area with a predetermined pressure to a second area with a predetermined lower pressure. At the transition from the first area to the second area, the graphite bed or the graphite suspension is accelerated. Due to the tensile, compressive, shear and / or shear stresses that are effective during acceleration, the layer packets are split into platelets or lamellae. The graphite bed or graphite suspension can be made from natural graphite or from synthetic graphite. An acid, for example sulfuric acid (H 2 S0 4 ) or nitric acid (HN0 3 ), is preferably added for the pretreatment of such a graphite bed or graphite suspension, the treatment being carried out at a temperature of approximately 1000.degree. As a result of this pretreatment, the lattice layers of the graphite are expanded like an accordion, so that the layer packets of the graphite can be torn apart more easily during acceleration.
Finally, a process for producing so-called expanded graphite is known (RU 2031835 Cl). With this The process involves subjecting carbon-containing material obtained in the manufacture of electrodes to treatment in an aqueous solution with sulfuric acid and oxidizing agents. In this treatment, the non-carbon-containing components are dissolved, so that an accumulation of amorphous and crystalline carbon occurs in the solid residue. Subsequent heat treatment of this solid residue transforms the crystalline graphite it contains into expanded graphite. A separation of crystalline graphite is not provided for in this process with a completely different objective.
The invention has for its object to provide a treatment method for graphite-containing materials that enables the production of crystalline graphite with a degree of purity of over 98% or an exact direct determination of the content of crystalline graphite in a carbon sample or in graphite-containing material.
This object is achieved in a process for separating crystalline graphite from a carbon-containing solid mixture, in particular blast furnace dusts, in that the solid mixture contains in an aqueous solution which contains at least one oxidizing acid and / or an oxidizing agent or a non-oxidizing acid and an oxidizing agent as a disintegrant , is heat treated at a pressure up to a maximum of 1000 bar, such an acid and / or such an oxidizing agent being / are used that all substances in the heat treatment Solid mixture other than crystalline graphite are converted into the liquid / gaseous phase, and then the crystalline graphite is then separated from the aqueous solution.
Verfahren wie Flotation, Zentrifugalseparation, Sichtung etc..This method is based on the basic idea of decomposing all substances contained in the solid mixture, including any amorphous carbon that may be present, by the added acid and / or the oxidizing agent with simultaneous pressurization, so that only crystalline graphite remains as a solid in the aqueous solution. This effect is based on the fact that the acids and / or oxidizing agents do not attack crystalline graphite even under pressure due to its stable lattice structure, but all other substances including amorphous carbon are decomposed. Although the method works with only one of the chemical agents specified, it is most effective if both an acid, in particular an oxidizing acid, and an oxidizing agent are used. Purity levels of over 99% can be achieved. Since only crystalline graphite is left, the proportion of crystalline graphite in the starting material can be determined simply and quickly with a generally sufficient accuracy, for example by measuring the difference in weight of the carbon-containing solid mixture and the remaining crystalline graphite. Known chemical or spectral analysis methods can be used for a more precise determination. Known discontinuous and continuous are suitable for the separation of the crystalline graphite from the aqueous solution Processes such as flotation, centrifugal separation, screening etc.
The pressure required during the heat treatment depends on the boiling pressure of the disintegrant at the given application temperature. In order to prevent the boiling of the solution and the premature outgassing of the reactive components (such as H 2 0 2 ) during the treatment of the solid mixture, the pressure should not be below the boiling pressure of the digesting agent or agents at the given application temperature. In principle, it can build itself up during the process if the heat treatment takes place in a reaction space which is closed to the outside. However, the process is particularly efficient when a form has been set up. Therefore, the simultaneous heat and pressure treatment is preferably carried out in a closed reaction vessel. The pressure during the treatment at 265 ° C. is preferably 160 bar. This high pressure can be built up by placing the reaction vessel under an upstream pressure of 50 to 100 bar. The supply of heat then increases the pressure further. With a pre-pressure of 60 bar, it increases from 265 ° C to approx. 160 bar at the temperature mentioned.
Demineralized water is preferably used for the aqueous solution. This has the advantage that no contaminants from dissolved minerals are introduced into the process. For the effectiveness of the separation reaction of amorphous carbon and crystalline graphite, the treatment temperature and the composition of the aqueous solution with the disintegrant are the primary determinants. The optimal treatment pressure depends on these treatment factors. In addition, it changes over the treatment time, since carbon dioxide released in a closed treatment room leads to an increase in pressure. The temperature during the temperature treatment should be between 150 ° C and 400 ° C. In practice, good results have been achieved with a temperature around 265 ° C. Optimal results were achieved when an oxidizing agent and an acid, in particular an oxidizing acid, were used together with a treatment temperature of up to 300 ° C.
Thermal energy can be supplied in various ways, e.g. by electrical heating, laser radiation, chemical combustion, but especially by microwave radiation.
As an acid, in particular an oxidizing acid, and / or an oxidizing agent, various substances are suitable, in particular hydrofluoric acid (H 2 F 2 ), sulfuric acid (H 2 S0 4 ), nitric acid (HN0 3 ), phosphoric acid (H 3 P0 4 ) or hydrogen peroxide (H 2 0 2 ). Hydrochloric acid and perchloric acid are also suitable. Which substances are added depends on the suspected substances in the solid mixture which are to be subjected to oxidative or acidic decomposition. In order to remove residues of the aqueous solution after the separation of the crystalline graphite from the aqueous solution, the graphite should be rinsed and dried.
There are various methods for the quantitative determination of the crystalline graphite separated from the aqueous solution. A common method is that the graphite is burned and the resulting gas is analyzed.
