Abstract

A shoot bolt mechanism comprises a casing (10) with the minimum distance between the front and rear edges. This is achieved by locating a handle-rotated boss (13) as close as possible to the rear wall and by providing a curved link (14) extending between a lug (31) on the boss and a shoot bolt (11). When the shoot bolt (11) is retracted, the link (14) lies around the surface of the boss (13) and in a recess (35) in the shoot bolt (11). The mecanism also includes two drive transfer members (12) which, as the shoot bolt (11) moves from a retracted to an extended position, move outwardly in respective opposite directions normal to the direction of the movement of the shoot bolt (11) to move respective shoot bolt rods (15). The mechanism can be used in moveable door and window frames to lock the moveable frame to the fixed frame at three spaced locations.

Claims

20AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 27 January 1995 (27.01.95); original claim 1 amended; original claim 9 cancelled; original claims 10-18 and 2-8 renumbered as claims 2-12 and 11-17 respectively (5 pages)]
1. A shoot bolt mechanism comprising a casing containing a shoot bolt (11) slidable between an inoperative position and an operative position, a rotatable drive member (13) mounted in the casing and a link (14) pivotally connected at one end to the shoot bolt (11) and at an end opposite said one end to a point on the drive member (13) eccentric from the axis of rotation thereof, said pivot axes being parallel to the axis of rotation of the drive member (13) so that rotation of the drive member (13) is translated by the link (14) into movement of the shoot bolt (11) between said retracted and extended positions, two drive transfer members (12) being disposed on respective opposite sides of the shoot bolt (11), rotation of said drive member (13) moving the drive transfer members (12) between respective retracted and extended positions.
2. A mechanism according to claim 1 wherein the shoot bolt (11) is linked to the two drive transfer members (12) so that movement of said shoot bolt (11) between the inoperative and operative positions causes movement of the drive transfer members (12) between the retracted and extended positions and movement of the shoot bolt (11) between the operative and inoperative positions causes movement of the drive transfer members (12) between the extended and retracted positions.
3. A mechanism according to claim 2 wherein the linkage between the shoot bolt (11) and each drive transfer member (12) comprises a pin (28) engaging in an angled slot (38) so that movement of the pin (28) in one direction produces a force in a direction normal to said direction of pin movement.
4. A mechanism according to claim 3 wherein each pin (28) is carried on the shoot bolt (11) with each angled slot (38) formed on an associated one of the drive transfer members (12) .
5. A mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein each drive transfer member (12) includes a connector (39) for connecting the drive transfer member (12) to a shoot bolt rod (15) for moving a respective further shoot bolt remote from the mechanism between inoperative and operative positions in accordance with the retracted and extended positions of the associated drive transfer member (12).
6. A mechanism according to claim 5 wherein each connector includes an aperture (39) and a pair of spaced spring limbs 22
(41) extending across the aperture (39) on respective opposite sides thereof.
7. A mechanism according to claim 6 wherein each drive transfer member (12) includes two side-by-side apertures (39), the spring limbs (41) for the two apertures being provided by an H-shaped spring clip (40), one pair of limbs (41) of the H-shaped clip (40) projecting into one aperture
(39) and the other pair of limbs (41) of the H-shaped clip
(40) projecting into the other aperture (39).
8. A mechanism according to claim 7 and further comprising two shoot bolt rods (15), each rod having a further shoot bolt at one end thereof and a coupling (45) at an end thereof opposite said one end, each coupling (45) being engaged with a connector (39) of an associated one of the drive transfer members (12).
9. A mechanism according to claim 8 wherein each coupling (45) is disengageable from the associated connector (39).
10. A mechanism according to claim 8 or claim 9 wherein each coupling (45) comprises a mushroom-shaped head (46), with a stem (47) of the head (46) having two opposite flats (48) whose ends are connected by curved portions having the same diameter of the head, the spring limbs (41), when the 23
coupling (45) engages the connector with the head (46) inserted in the connector aperture, engaging behind the head and with respective flats, rotation of the coupling (45) causing the curved portions to spring the limbs (41) apart and allow said disengagement.
11. A mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the drive member comprises a boss (13) including a lug (31) projecting therefrom, the lug (31) including said pivotal connection with the link.
12. A mechanism according to claim 1 or claim 11 wherein the drive member (13) includes an exterior surface of circular cross-section, the link (14) including an inner edge (33) having a curvature generally equal to the curvature of said circular cross-section, said inner edge (33) embracing the exterior surface of the drive member (13) when the shoot bolt is in the inoperative position.
13. A mechanism according to claim 12 wherein the drive member (13) includes an exterior surface of circular cross-section, the link (14) including an outer edge (34) having a curvature generally equal to the curvature of said circular cross-section, the shoot bolt (11) including an inner recess (35) having a corresponding curvature so that, when the shoot bolt (11) is in the inoperative position, 24
the curved outer edge (35) of the link (14) is received in said recess (35) .
14. A mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein, when the shoot bolt (11) is in the inoperative position, the axes of the pivotal connections of the link (14) lie on an imaginary arc having a centre on the axis of the drive member (13) and subtending an angle of 90 relative to the drive member axis.
15. A mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 14 wherein, when the shoot bolt (11) is in the operative position, the axes of the pivotal connections of the link (14) and the axis of the drive member (13) lie on an imaginary straight line extending in the same direction as the direction of movement of the shoot bolt (11).
16. A mechanism according to claim 15 wherein the drive member (13) rotates through 90° to move said bolt (11) between the inoperative and operative positions.
17. A mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 16 wherein the shoot bolt (11) is constrained by the casing (10) to rectilinear movement between said inoperative and operative positions.
