DESIGN FOR ROCKING-CHAIR.
Specification forming part of Design No. 8. [63, dated February 23, 1875; application filed October 15, 1574. [Term (f Patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern lie it known that we,(lnovn ll. llxnwoon, ol' the city of Troy, in the county of lit-asselaer and State of New York, and K012151161 Wool), of \\'est Troy, in the county of AlbanyandState aforesaid, havejointlyinvented and produced a new and original ornz'unental Design for Chairs, of which the lollowing is a specification, reference being had to the aceompaning photographic representation of a chair embodying our said new design.
One part of this invention consists of the design for the back of a chair, composed of the two rear posts A A, round in transverse section, and extended below the seat and forming the rear legs of the chair, and extending upward above the seat in parallel or nearly parallel directions, and thereby constituting the side posts of the back of the chair, and tapered and curved inward at the upper parts 0 b, and united in bow form, and thereby coir stituting the small round bow top of the chairback; and the upper round, or cross-bar (J, extending from one side post, A, to the other, A, at a less distance below the bow top than the distance between the said side posts, so as to inclose the oblong eurvedtop opening 1); and the lower round, or bar E, extending between the side posts A A, and at a distance less than its length above the seat, so as to inclose an oblong quadrilateral opening just above the rear side of the seat, and the oblong quadrilateral back-rest F, extending from the cross-bar C to the bar E, all of these parts being shaped and arranged together, so as to present substantially the same tasty appearance and design for the back of a chair as is represented in the aforesaid photograph.
Another part of this invention consists of the design for the middle portion of an armchair, composed of the seat H, having four straight sides, i i j j round rear posts A A, extending below the seat and forming the rear legs of the chair, and also extending above the seat and constituting the side posts of the back of the chair; the upper and lower rounds or cross-bars C and E, and intermediate oblong quadrilateral backrest F, and the front posts K K, round in transverse section, and
forming the front legs of the chair, and extended upward from the front corners of the seal, and tapered and curved rearward at (1, and thence extended rearward in reduced diameter and in the form of small round armrcsts M M, and with the rear parts n a curved upward and terminated against the posts A A at or below or about the middle of the length of the back of the chair, all these parts being shaped and arranged together so as to present substantially the same tasty appear ance as is represented in the photograph at'oresaid.
Another part of our invention consists ol. the design for a chair, composed of the round rear posts A A forming the sides of the hack, and tapered, curved, and united in bow form at the top, the upper and lower cross-bars O and E, back-rest 1 seat H, and round front posts K K, tapered, and curved, and extended upward and rearward in the form of round curved arm-rests M M, to and against the back-posts, all so as to appear substantially as represented in the aforesaid photograph.
In carrying out our present invention, the lower parts of the posts may be made of any desired shape, and either with or without rockers, and the seat and back-rest, or either of them, may have either a plain, checkered, or other desirable surface or covering.
United States Design Patent No. 6,875 shows a chair having a back with round side posts, upper and lower cross-bars, and intermediate quadrilateral back-rest, and we do not herein claim that design for the back of a chair; but that patent does not show, in conneetion with those parts, a bow-shaped top of round cross-section, which is an essential element of our present design for the back of a chair.
Chair-backs have been heretofore made with bow-shaped tops formed by the union of the upper parts of the side posts, and we do not broadly claim that feature; but we believe that such chair-backs have not had the upper and lower cross-bars and intermediate oblong quadrilateral backrest, which are essential elements of our present design.
Chairs have been heretofore made or devised with arm-rests which were eontinuations l ing the front legs, and tapered and curved at of the front legs, and extended upward and rearward in curved form to the side posts of the baek; and we do not herein claim that feature.
\Vhat we elaim as our joint invention is 1. The design for the back of a rhair, composed of the round side posts A A, which extend below the seat and form the rear legs of the ehair, and are tapered and eurved inward at the upper parts 0 b, and united in reduced diameter and bow form at the top, and the upper and lower cross-bars (J and E, and intervening quadrilateral back-rest 1 all shaped and arranged together, as speeified and shown.
2. The design for the middle portion of the ehair, emnposed ot' the seat ll, with four sides, '11 ijj, the round rear posts A A forming the rear legs and the side posts of the back, the upper and lower cross-bars U E, and intervening quadrilateral backrest F, and the front posts K K, round in cross-section, and formt i above the seat, and extended rearward in redueed diameter, and in the form of small round eurved arm-rests M M, to and against the round rear posts, all shaped and arranged together, as shown and described.
3. The design for a ehair, composed of the round rear posts A A, tapered, eurved, and united together in how form at the top, erossbars 0 E, back-rest F, seat ll, and round front posts K K, tapered, curved, and extended upward and rearward to and against the baek posts, all substantially as represented in the :itforesaid photograph.
In testimony whereof we hereunto subscribe our names this 12th day of October, 1874;.
