Description

A. VANDERVELD. LATGH-FOR MOVABLE GARMENT SUPPORTS.
- Patented Deb. 6,1910.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 17, 1910.
ANTHONY VHNDERVELD nu: NORRIS PETERS :0, wnsmnorcnv, 1:.
UITED TATE PT ent re ANTHONY VANDERVELD, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T0 GRAND RAPIDS SHOW CASE COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
LATCH FOR MOVABLE GARMENT-SUPPORTS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY (ANDER- VELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rap ds, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have mvented certain new and useful improvements in Latches for Movable Garment-Supports; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in latches for movable garment supports, and its object is to provide a movable garment support for wardrobes or other like devices with a latch adapted to hold the support in closed position and conveniently arranged to be manually released when the support is moved outward. When in use, such garment supports are sometimes placed opposite a glass front, or other closure, and if the support is partially opened out, it IS liable to break the glass or in ure the closure. My device is adapted to prevent accidents of this kind by securely holding the support in closed position.
My invent-ion consists essentially of a hook attached to the fixed portion of the garment support, and a manually released latch attached to the movable part of the same and detachably engaging the hook, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevatlon of a garment support having my device attached thereto and shown in partially opened position; Fig. 2 the same in closed position; Fig. 3 a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: the same on the line let of Fig. 1.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents one fixed member of a telescopic garment support of any convenient construction and having movable or telescoping members B and C, carrying a rod D on which the garments are hung, the form Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 17, 1910.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Serial No. 550,062.
herein shown being merely to illustrate my device and forming no part of this invention, which is adapted to any form of garment support having one fixed and one movable member.
2 is hook attached to the fixed portion of the support, preferably to the outer or forward hanger l of the same.
3 is anoutwardly projecting latch preferably formed of a rod 4 bent at right angles and longitudinally movable in a groove or channel 5 in the front end of the movable part of the support.
6 is a guide lug through which the rod at extends, said rod being provided with a push button 7 on its lower end conveniently located relative to the handle 9 to be readily operated to release the end 3 from the hook 2, as occasion requires.
I prefer to supply the device with a spring 8 between the guide lug 6 and the button 7 to yieldingly hold the latch 3 in engagement with the hook 2, and the latch is retained in the groove 5 and limited in downward movement by a pin or rivet 10 extending transversely through the groove.
From the foregoing description, the operation of my device is obvious without further explanation.
WVhat I claim is 1. In combination with a garment support having a fixed member and a longitudinally movable member, a handle on the movable member provided with a groove, a guide lug on the handle, a rod slidable in the groove and lug and having an outwardly extending end projecting from the groove to engage the hook, a push button on the end of the rod to manually release the end of the rod from the hook and a spring on the rod between the lug and the push button to yieldingly force the same apart.
2. In combination with a garment sup porthaving a fixed member and a longitudinally movable member therein, a handle on the movable member provided with a vertical groove, a lug on the handle, a,rod verber engaged by the bent end of the rod, a push button on the lower end of the rod,
and a pin extending transversely of the groove to guide and limit the rod.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature 1n presence of two Witnesses.
ANTHQNY VANDERVELD.
