W. D. BARNES.
TRUNK FASTENEH.
APPLICATION FILED DBO. 1, 1911.

iflLUMBlA PLANOGRAPII GIL-WASHINGTON, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER D. BARNES, 0F SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
TRUNK-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spring hasps for trunks, suit cases and the like, and my object is to provide a hasp for holding the top firmly in place on the trunk or suit case, and one that will hold said top against lateral as well as vertical movement.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several fig ures, and as described in the specification forming a part of this application.
Figure l is a side elevation of the hasp in position as clasped, and with a position shown in dotted line of the parts with the lever thrown back to raise the top of the trunk. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the lever and spring set, and in dotted lines the lever partially raised and the spring released. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line a" w of Fig. 1.
On a base plate 1, which is firmly secured'on the top A of a trunk, is secured a U-shaped barrel 2 having one end closed and an aperture or opening in the other end, and with elongated slots 3 in the sides. Within said barrel 2 is made to operate a plunger bolt 4. A head 4 has oppositely disposed holes 5 therein, and on the other portion is carried a spiral spring 6, one end of said spring bears against the larger portion 4: of said plunger bolt and the other end against the lower end of the said barrel 2. WVithin said holes 5 of said plunger bolt are fitted the ends of a rect-angularly shaped link 7, portions of which slide within said slots 3. On the sides B of the trunk is secured the bracket shaped plate 8 at the end adjacent said barrel 2:. Within said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 1, 1911.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Serial No. 663,462.
bracket shaped end of said plate 8 is fastened or integrally formed a socket 9, within which the end of the plunger'bolt 4 is made at times to seat. Pivoted to the sides of said bracket shaped plate 8 is one end of a bracket shaped lever 10 having link engaging open slots 11 cut in the side edges, within which slots 11 the end of said link 7 at times engages. lVith the said base plate 1 fastened on the top A of the trunk, and the bracket shaped plate 8 fastened on the side B of a trunk with their edges adjacent, the operation of my device is as follows The lever 10 is thrown up and the link 7 passed thereover and into engagement in the open slots 11, as shown in dotted lines Figs. 1 and 2. With the said link so engaged with the lever 10, said lever is thrown down as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This movement will draw the plunger bolt 4 longitudinally within the said barrel 2, and cause the end of said bolt 4: to seat in the socket 9, and thereby hold the top firmly against lateral movement. The tension of the spring 6 will hold said top A from being raised. When the said movement of the parts is reversed, and the said lever 10 is raised, the spring will draw the said plunger bolt from the said socket 9 and the top may be raised.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim In a clasp for trunks, suit cases and the like the combination of a base plate, a U-shaped barrel fastened thereto, a plunger bolt operated within said barrel, a link pivotally secured in the side of said plunger bolt, a bracket shaped plate, a socket secured therein, and a lever pivoted to said bracket shaped plate having open slots in the edges of said lever adapted to hold said link in engagement therewith at times.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
