ADJUSTABLE CASTER FOR STOVES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed November 5, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVARREN H. WVARD, of Southport, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Adjustable Caster for Stoves and the Like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide improved legs for stoves and the like having caster wheels adapted to lift the stove and legs so that legs will not rest on the floor, for the purpose of moving the stove. hen the stove is positioned, the legs are let down on the floor.
The chief feature of the invention, therefore, consists in combining with stove legs a rigid block or bearing on the inside thereof provided with vertically disposed internal threads, a screw bolt operable in said block with a head projecting above the stove leg for the application of a wrench, and a caster mounted in connection with the lower end of the screw bolt, whereby the caster may be elevated or lowered for the purpose stated.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stove leg and a portion of the stove to which it is attached, and a caster in connection with the leg elevated from the floor. Fig. 2 is partly a section on the line of Fig. l and partly showing an inside elevation of the leg and caster with the caster on the floor and the leg ofi the floor. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through Fig. 1.
In the drawings herein 10 represents a stove or like article of furniture with a downwardly extending headed lug 11, about which a slotted top piece 12 of a stove leg 13 is adapted to slip. The stove leg may be attached in this manner or in any other manner as far as this invention is concerned. The stove leg is concave on the inside, and in such concavity a bearing block 15 is secured by rivets or screws 16. The block projects inwardly and, therefore, to some extent out of sight, and has a vertically disposed threaded opening through it for the screw bolt 17. This screw bolt projects upwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

through an opening 18 in the top of the stove leg, and the head is squared to receive a wrench or the like, and it has an ornamental cap 19 above the stove leg, as seen in Fig. 1. When one operates the device, the cap 19 is removed. The lower end of the screw bolt 17 has a reduced portion 20 upon which there are ball-bearing plates 21 and 22 with ball races for the balls 23 in the adjacent surfaces of said plates. The plates are held in position by the nut 24. From the plate 22 a pair of arms 25 extend downwardly and at the lower ends carry a pin 26 on which a caster roller 27 is mounted.
Normally, when the stove or furniture is in fixed position the parts are as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to move the stove, the cap 19 is removed, a wrench is applied to the upper end of the bolt 17 and it is turned so as to force the caster down on the floor and elevate the leg and stove enough to cause the leg to clear the floor. Then the stove is pushed around or moved as desired, and when subsequently positioned, the bolt 17 is operated reversely until the leg rests on the floor and the caster is off the same, as shown in Fig. 1. The cap 19 is then replaced.
This elevating caster device forms a part of the leg so as to be attached to and sold with the leg, and is not removed from the leg, and is, therefore, always in place for use.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination of the leg of a stove or the like provided with an opening at its upper end, a bearing block secured to theinner surface of the leg with a vertically threaded hole through it, a threaded bolt extending through said bearing block and through and beyond the hole in the upper end of the leg, said bolt formed at its upper end to receive a wrench, a caster mounted on the lower end of said bolt, and a removable cap on the upper end of said bolt, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
