BUCKLE.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, Janns F. lvloLLoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings and thenumerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact desciption of the same, and whichsaid drawings constitute part of this speciticm tion, and represent, in
Figure l a top or plan view of a buckle with the strap detached. Fig. 2 a. sectional view showing the strap engaged with the buckle and before tension is applied thereto. Fig. a similar View with the strap under tension. Fig. 4.- .a plan view of the frame ,detached. Fig. 5 a perspective view of the slide, detached. Fig. 6 a sectional view of a modified form of my buckle. This invention relates to an improvement in buckles and particularly to buckles adapted for use in connection with straps, such as trunk straps or other straps which are adapted to be placed under considc able strain, which will firmly hold the strap and which canbe readily disengaged therefrom;
and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly ,rdcited in the claims.
As shown I employ rectangular frame comprising side bars 2, 23, a forward bar a 5 and rear bar these bars :t'orming the rectangular frame and the sides 2, 3, are preferably connected by a transverse ha r (i. The rear ends-of the sides 2, 3, are inclined upward so as to 1'1 isc the rear bar 5' above the plane of the bars 4 and 6 so as to form a tuck loop. The clamping member is in the form of a slide and comprises a plate with rearwardly extending arms 8 and 9 the rear endgrf thearms being connected by a yaw 5bit; '10 having its forward edge imtnrn'ed and serrated to provide gripping teeth 1]. llus 1 aw bar 10 is set downward between the des 2 and 3. and the rear edge of the arms *8 and 9 have fingers l2 and 13 wiich are respective adapted to fold over the side bars 3 films while the plate 7 adapted to slide upou'the surface of the framethe jaw bar 10 is sefdown between the frame so ihatI-the slide has firm support on the frame. The plate 7 also formed with a lip l-f which extends downward and beneath Specification of Iletters Patent.

the forward bar 4. The inner edge of the plate and the edge of the lip 14 are so disposed with relation to the forward bar 4 that they will coact with the strap as will be hereinafter described. One end of the strap 15 is looped over the transverse bar 6 and is passed beneath the rear bar 5; the other end of the strap is passed from rear to front between the teeth 11 and the forward bar 4, then strain is brought to bear upon the strap the surface of the strap will engage with the edge of the lip 14 and tend to draw it outward, and thisoutward strain upon the lip 1% draws the teeth 11 into closeeugagement with the strap and clamps it against the forward bar 4:. \V hen it is desired to release the strap the plate 7 is pushed back which forces the teeth 11 backward away from the bar 4 and so releases the strap, the rounded surface between the plate '7 and its lip 14 forming a convenient finger-piece, and yet by being rounded is not liable to be accidentally engaged so as to inadv crtently release the buckle.
Instead of employing the transverse bar 6, the strap'may be secured to the rear bar 5 of the frame as shown in Fig. (3, and instead of passing the strap upward between the bar and the teeth 11, it may be passed upward through the frame in rearof the iaw bar 10, then turned forward over the bar 10 and downward between the teeth 11, and-the forward bar t, 'and the strain upon the strap will cause the teeth 11 to clamp the strap against the bar t as before described and rearward pressure upon the forward edge of the slide will release the -ap.
i claim 1. A buckle comprising a frame having sides, front and rear bat, combined with a slide comprising a plate bearing upon the front bar and carrying a jaw bar which is set down vard between the sides of the frame, said plate also formed with a downwardly and rei11.\.'ardly projecting lip adapted to extend beneath the front bar of the frame, substantially described.
A buckle comprising a frame having sides, ends and a transverse bar, the rear end of the sides bent upward whereby the rear bar stands in a different plane from the plane of the front bar, coi'nbinml with a slide comprising a plate and rearwardly said jaw bar set downward between the side bars of the frame, said arms formed with fingers which are folded beneath the side bars of the frame and the slide also formed with a lip extending downward and beneath the forward bar of the frame, substantially as described.
3. A. buckle, comprising a frame including side bars and cross bars forming a loop in both the forward and rear portions of the frame, a slide connected with the frame and having a strap opening thcrethrough and a toothed upwardly extending edge to engage a strap, and an extension disposed dowmvard below the frame to form a thumb piece and an edge for 4. A buckle, comprising a. frame including side bars and cross bars forming a loop in both the forward and rear portions of the frame, a slide connected with the frame the engagement f fthe strap. n
both the forward and rear portions of-t ne frame, a slide connected to the side bars having a loop of a width and shape substan'tially like that of the forward loop through the frame, and having a series of teeth along its inner edge for the engagement of a strap, and an extension formed upon the forward cross bar of the slide and disposed downward and inward for the engagement of the strap.
(3. A, buckle, roi'nprising a frame including side bars and cross bars forming a loop in both the forward and rear portions of the frame, a slide having a strap opening therethrough and arranged upon the front side of the frame and slldably connected thereto with an edge to engage a strap and having an extension turned down and under the forward bar of the frame and with its edge disposed across the path of the strap when threaded through the buckle.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
