Be it known that I, HERMAN SCHMIEDIQKE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Manitowoc, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,- such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in buckles, and pertains to a device which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the buckle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the buckle and strap. Fig. 4c is a longitudinal sectional view showing my invention used as a loop-buckle.

Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the parallel sides of the buckle; b, the rear cross-bar; c and d, intermediate cross-bars.

B indicates the front end plate, the top of which is provided with beveled or tapered edges e, as illustrated in Fig. l. The under side of the plate B is provided with a depending tongue or studf, the said stud or tongue being rigidly attached thereto.

The strap Cis passed between the end bar b and the cross-bar c, then under the end plate B, where the stud or tongue/f will en# gage the perforation g.

The strap D is passed around the cross-bar d and the end sewed or riveted, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. with a perforation or recess h, extending through the upper layer of leather, and is adapted to receive or register with the depending stud or tongue f after the tongue has passed through the perforation of the strap C. .t

This construction will prevent the strap C from slipping or from being accidentally released should the perforation g become worn.

The tapering sides e of the plate B form a perfectly smooth surface, and the tongue being unexposed the buckle is free from any projection for catching the Hy-net or hair.

In using myinvention as a loop-buckle the strap is passed under the end plate B between the end barb and the cross-bar c. The desired loop is then made and the end passed between the cross-bars c and d, then under the end plate B, where the stud or tongue f will engage or enter the desired perforations, as shown in Fig. 3. The said bar c is adapted to hold the strap C in a line with the strap D, and its main object is to provide means wherebyv the forward end of the buckle can be thrown from engagement with the strap D. The bar o being at one side of the piv otal connection d with the strap D, by taking hold of the strap C and pressing it down it `will come incontact withV the bar c and nec essarily throw the forward end of the buckle carrying the tongue out of engagement with the strap D.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isml A buckle comprising practically U-shaped side bars having their outer ends connected by plates, a downwardly extending tongue carried by the forward plate, a strap-securing bar connecting the lower portion of said U-shaped bars intermediate the plates, and a releasing-bar connecting said side bars between the strap-securing bar and the rear plate, substantially as described.
