Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Invm H. ABELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and particularly to those of the so called slide type; that is, a buckle in which one member slides upon the other and is drawn into holding engagement by the tension of the strap, and while especially adapted for use in leather straps, may be used on straps of other material, the object being to provide a slide buckle which will rigidly grip the strap and from which the strap may be conveniently disengaged, and to which thefixed end of the strap may be attached without riveting or sewing; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.

In carrying out my invention I employ a frame comprising sides 2, 3, forward bar 1 and rear bar 5, the sides being connected by a cross-bar 6 near the rear end 5 which is turned up in a plane above the plane of the forward bar a. The inner edge of the forward bar 4 is turned upward and slightly bowed, forminga lip 7 the face of which is formed with transverse gripping ribs 8 more or less in number, three being shown in the drawings. Preferably and as herein shown, the bar 6 is formed with a rearwardly extending inte 'ral post or pin 9. The slide comprises a forward bar 10 with side flanges 11 which extend up on opposite sides of the sides 2, 3, of the frame to act as guides, and the rear end 12 of the slide passes up through the frame and is turned forward to form a gripping edge in line with the gripping ribs 8 and at opposite sides of its forward edge is formed with lugs 13 which bear upon the upper face of the sides 2, 3. This end 12 is also formed with upwardly projecting fingers 14 which form convenient means for moving the slide. One end 15 of the strap is passed beneath the bar 5 forward of the bar 6 and has a perforation to engage with the finger 9 and so as to be permanently connected with the buckle frame. The free end 16 of the strap is passed upward through the slide and through the frame, and when tension is placed upon the strap it will bear against the forward bar 10 so as to move the slide forward and clamp the strap between the gripping edge of the slide and the gripping ribs 8 of the lip 7 The free end of the strap may be passed beneath the bar 5 which forms a tuck loop for it. It will thus be seen that the greater the strain upon the strap the tighter it will be clamped between the slide and the frame; but to release the strap it is only necessary to move the slide slightly rearward, whereupon the strap is free to be drawn out.

I claim A slide buckle having a frame comprising side bars, a front, a rear and a transverse bar, said front bar formed with a lip projecting upward from its inner edge, said lip formed with a transverse gripping rib, a slide beneath said frame and having a forward bar and a rear bar extending up through the frame and resting upon the surface thereof, the gripping or forward edge of the slide arranged in a plane above'the plane of the frame and coacting with said gripping rib to clamp a strap passing between them.
