A. M. MOYLAN. PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER, APPTJU ATION FILED MAR. 23, 1909.

Smmutoz UNITED sra'rns PATENT "OFFICE.
- ALEXANDER M.- 1vroYLA1v, or CENTURY, FLORIDA.
' PEN Am) PENCIL HOLDER,
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. More- LAN, citizen of the United "States, residing at Century, State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to writing devices and refers particularly to an attachment to be applied to pens and pencils for the purpose of enablingthe writer to hold the same atvthe proper'angle.
The invention has for anobject the provision of a device of this character by.means of which the pen or pencil used will be secured to the forefinger of the operator and which maybe and will enable thei operator free use of the thumb and remaining fingers for turning over or handling papers, blotters or the like during short intervals between the employment of the en or pencil.
The i-nvent1on has for another object theprovision of a device of this character which may be einployed'for instructing persons in the art of writing by holding the pen or pencil employed 'at the correct angle and thus causingthe operator to acquire the habit of positioning the pencil at such an angle as to obviate the cramping of the fingers incident to the exertion of great pressure upon the pencil which .is prevalent among writers andwhich is not a necessity for the operation of the pen or pencil.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a device of thischaracter which will admit of the positioning of the forefinger and the thumb against the pen or pencil in the usual manner and which will necessitate .the correct engagement of the same therewith, the device enabling the withdrawal of the thumb therefrom without detaching thepencil from the forefinger in order to admit of the free'usage of the same for erasures or the like during the operation of writing. v
The invention still further aims the provision of a device which possesses the above enumerated advantages and' which at the same time comprises but. few operative parts preferably are integrally formed so that the device may be economically produced and thereby adaptable to the general, public. I
Other objects and advantages will be pointed out in the specification which dis.
in the-county of Escambi-a and' Specifieation of Iletters Patent. Patented'Oct. 19, 1909. -Application filed March 23, 1909. Serial No. 485,203.
closes the formation of the device in this application and in theappended claims.
For a full understanding of'the invention reference is to be had to'the following description Figure 1 is a perspective view of theat- .tachment in operative position. Fig. 2 is a single length-ofwire which 1s bent to form a ring 10 which is adapted to encircle the lower end of the pencil 11, or pen if the same be employed, one end of the length oflwire which forms the ring 10 being extended from the under side of the pencil 11 inwardly where it is curved upwardly to form a thumb loop 12. The thumb, loop 12 is terminated at the end of the lengthof wire which extends upwardly and engages beneath the pencil 11 where it protrudes adistance outwardly therefrom at a downwardly curved angle. The opposite end of the length of wire which forms the ring 10 is engaged beneath the thumb loop 12 at its 1111161 extremity and is curved upwardly therefrom to form a finger loop 13, the same being formed by the curvlng downwardly of the length of wire to a pointadjacen't the pencil 11: wherethe length of wire which is turned upwardly as at 14 in substantially the plane of the pencil 11 is diverged rearwardly therefrom.
In applying and operating the device the pencil 11 is engaged through the ring 10 11d rested intermediately upon the upper face of the outer end of the thumb loop 12.
The portion 14 is engaged between the first and second lingers by inserting the forefinger between the pencil lland the portion lei and engaging the end of the finger and accompanying drawings, in. .WlllCll through the loop 13 against the side of the pencil 11. The thumb of the operator isnow engaged upwardly through the loop 12 against the sid'e'of the pencil 11 to form a firm' grip uponthe same. When in this position it is observed that the pencil is disposed substantially in parallel with the forc finger and that the forefinger and the thumb are held in a natural position without the ne-v cessity of cramping the same a ainst the penoil in order to secure the pencii'i idly in po-\ sition. -Whenthe thumb is with rawn from the loop 12 the loop 13 maintains the pencil. 11 upon the forefinger and whereby the pencil will be h tive position during the employment of the thumb and other fingers in handling papers or the like.
' In employing this device the operator assumes the habit ofwriting wi the encil 11 in the correct-position so that by disposing,of the device the hand will naturally assume the correct engagement about the pencil.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed asnew is r 1. A device as specified comprising .a length of. wire bent to form a ring for engagement about the lower end of a pencil,
a thumb loop formed by one end of the length of wire and extended radially and upwardly on the pencil, the pencil adapted to rest upon the upper face of the said thumb loop, a finger loop formed on the o posite end of the length of wire and extende upwardly above the pencil and an upwardly bent portion extended lengthwise of the pencil and diverged at its rear extremity therefrom for engagement between the first and second finger of the operator to ide the device.
2. In a device as speclfied the combinairovi'des means e (1 1n an operation with a writing im lement of a, ring for engagement about sai implement, a; thumb loop extended laterally and backwardly from said ring, a finger loop'upwardly extended from said ring for engagement aboutthe index finger and a guide rearwardl'y extended from said ring-for engagement between the index and second fingers.-
: 3. In a holder for writing implements the about said implement, a thumb loop to encircle the thumb-and'retain the same against said implement; a finger loop in the wire'to engage the index finger to steady the imimplement,
plement'and a guide extended between the index and second fingersfrom the ring for directing the point of the writing implement.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of-two witnesses. I
ALEXANDER M. MOYLAN. [a 8.]
