PENCIL ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed April 6, 1918. Serial N 0. 227,071.
' To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN VIDAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencil attachments and has for its principal object, the provision of a device of this character which will serve as a rest or support for the fingers ofthe hand and permit of greater freedom of the fingers and prevent undue cramping of the hand while in the act of writing.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character in which several articles will be combined in one, such as an eraser, sharpening blade and loss preventing attachment, all of which are arran ed whereby either one may be convenient y brought into service at the will of the user. In this connection, it is desired also to state that the eraser mentioned is so positioned with respect to the writing end ofthe pencil that should need .be created for its use, the pencil 'may be canted in the direction of the paper and the eraser brought into use while the hand remains'actively engaged with the device.
Figure 1, is a side view of a pencil showing the application of the invention thereto.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the pencil canted in order that the eraser can be brought into use.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device detached from the pencil.
The device comprises an attaching or pencil embracing section 5 which is referably constructed of a single piece 0 metal or other suitable well known material, the same having one or a plurality of windings 6 and 7 The metal is possessed of suflicient springiness to permit the windings menurchase with the pencil as shown in i5. 1, so that the device will be held in any desired position upon the pencil with respect to the point or writing end thereof.
From the winding 6 the material is preferably provided with an angularly disposed branch 8 whi h constitutes a portion of a rest 9 which is adapted to receive the thumb.
From the branch 8 the metal is extended in an outward direction at 10 and then in an angular direction as at 11 and at this point, said branch 11 is provided with a retaining passage or recess 12 in which a rubber eraser 13 is fitted and exposed so that when the pencil is canted as shown in Fig. 2, it may be conveniently brought into active use. The under side of the branch 10 is beveled to form a cutting edge 14 so that at the convenience of the user, the device may be slipped from the pencil and used as a knife for pointing and sharpening the pencil.
The other winding 7, is bent downward at 15 against one side of the pencil and then outward at 16 and upward at 17, the latter portion being'yieldable with relation to the portion 15 so that the two constitute a clip which is adapted to be engaged over the edge of a pocket to hold the pencil against accidental loss. The branch 17 is provided with a finger rest or support 18 which is adapted to be engaged by the index finger of the hand.
It will be observed through the formation of the structure described, that the same can be readily applied to a pencil and positioned at any desired point with relation to the writing end thereof so that the fingers of the hand may be brought against the rests 9 and 18. In this manner, the pencil may be manipulated with great convenience and undue cramping of the fingers while in the act of writing will be appreciably minimized. Should the user desire to make an erasure of matter written, it is simply necessary to cant the pencil until the eraser 15 be is directly above the writing to be eradicated. By pressing slightly thereagainst, the eraser may be fully brought into use.
What is claimed as new is A pencil attachment comprising, a member having a pencil embracing portion, a clip located at one side of said portion and terminally provided with a finger rest, and an eraser support located at the opposite side of said member in line with said terminal rest and serving also asa finger rest as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN VIDAL.
