To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SOUTHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Cigar-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to provide a device adapted to be secured upon the side of a wall, or to rest upon a table or the like, upon which a'smoker can rest his cigar or cigarette a short time without the possibility of the butt or mouth end of the cigar being contaminated by contact with impurities as, for instance, those resulting from the deposition in the same place of a cigar by another smoker.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which, when in use, will in no way injure the lighted end of the cigar, and with which the cigar will receive an ample supply of air, so that it will remain lighted for as long a time as possible while so resting out of the smokers mouth.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of a second form thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view of a third form.

The form of the invention shown in Fig. 1, comprises a back plate 1, which is adapted to be secured by nails or screws to a wall, and from which extends a wire 2, the intermediate portion of which is formed into ahelical coil, as shown at 3, open at the top and bottom and forming a receptacle for a cigar. The top of this coil is of greater diameter than the bottom, so that the cigar can be readily inserted therein with the lighted end downwards, so that the lower end comes into contact with said spiral coil and the cigar is retained therein. The coil is spaced from the plate at such a distance, and is given such an angle of inclination, that the unlighted end of the cigar cannot come in contact with the back plate 1 or with the wall.

In the modification shown in Fi 2, the receptacle is made of sheet meta 4 with somewhat lar e perforations 5, and in this modification t ere is also provided a tray 6 secured to the back plate 1, detachably if desired, said tray being adapted to catch the ashes falling from the lower end of the cigar when in position. The tray may be omitted in places where it is of little conse uence that the ashes drop upon the floor. n this modification the back plate 1 is roughened on one side as shown at 7 to strike matches thereon and on the other side carries a small receptacle 8 for matches. In the above forms of the invention ample space is provided for the admission of air to the lighted end of the cigar so that the same may continue lighted as long as possible. It is for this purpose that the openings in the sheet meta receptacle are made somewhat large.

The form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 is particularly adapted for use on a desk or table. It comprises a box-like receptacle 9 for ashes and burned matches, having a lid or cover 10, in apertures of which are contained the cigar rece tacles 11 and the cigarette receptacle 12, al of perforated sheet metal, and of a frusto-conical form, the lower end of each discharging into the ash box. Upon said lid or cover is also formed a rece tacle 13 for matches, and one side of the ox is formed with an opening 14, through which the burned matches can be passed into the interior of the box.

It will be seen that all of the above forms of my invention provide means for holding a cigar in such posltion that its unlighted end cannot come in contact with any contaminating surface, and so that its lighted end is not extinguished by insufiiciency of air, nor is said lighted end spread, deformed, or otherwise injured, by the enetration of s ikes or the like, as in prior evices used for t is purpose.

A further important advanta e of th1s invention is the protection whic is thereby afforded against accidental setting fire to surrounding objects, such accidents being possible with other cigar rests, in which the cigar is not so securely held in position, as in my improved form.
