vide means to prevent the refuse within the device from assing outwardly therefrom and being spllled upon the table or floor upon whlch said device may rest in the event of the ldevice being accidentally upset and tipped toward either side thereof.

The invention consists in the combinationl and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.

ln-the drawings, 5 represents a base constructed of any suitable non-combustible material, preferably sheet metal, and having a chamber 6 upon the interior thereof constituting a container adapted to receive burnt matches, ashes or the butts of cigars and cigarettes which are conveyed thereto through a tubular column 7 mounted in a cover 8 rovided for the container 6. The cover 8 1s secured to the base 5 by hinges 9 upon one side thereof and a spring catch 10 of any suitable construction located upon the other side thereof. rlhe cover 8 is provided with a raised central portion 11 thereby forming a recess 12 in the underside of said cover. and the tubular column 7 pro- 4 jects through said raised central portion and entends some distance into the recess 12. discharge end of the tubular column 7 is cut od at a suitable angle to a horizontal nia-ne at 13 and is provided with a gate 14 4-.nged at 15 to a support 16 turn fastened and projecting from the nader surface of tate the cover 8. The gate 14 is normally held in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 by a resilient stop 17 which is secured to the under side thereof and which is adapted to contact with the support 16 when the gate is located in its open position. The location of the gate 14 and the hin e 15 is such that no matter to which side t e device may be upset, the combined actions of gravity and inertia will always act to swing the ate 14 against the lower end 13 of the co umn 7 and close the opening into said column. Although during the normal conditions of use the discharge end 13 of the column 7 is open a pocket 18 formed in the upper portion` o the recess 12 around said column above the lower end thereof acts to collect the smoke and fumes as they rise from smolderin articles and tend to hold said smoke an fumes within the container.

The upper end of the column 7 is providedwith a conical extension 1.9 which flares upwardly and hasan opening 2() at its upper extremity constituting an inlet opening for the column 7 into which the articles before mentioned may be dropped. A rod 21; extends across the opening 20 being securely fastened at the upper extremity of the conical extension and is provided for the purpose of being engaged by the burnt ends of cigars or cigarettes in order that the ashes may be removed therefrom. rllhe opposite end portions of the rod 21 are bent upwardly to form arms 22 and 23 and to the uppel` extremity of the arm 22 a cigar rest 24 is attached, while a match box holder 25 is secured to the upper extremity of the arm 23.

When in use if thedevice becomes upset it is evident that the tendency will be for the refuse within the container to fall to the lower side thereof and unless the container is more than half full if in tipping the re fuse enters the recess 12 the fact that the column 7 extends for a distance into said recess will prevent said refuse from entering the end 13 of said column. Moreover the gate 14 will always close if the device becomes upset and also act to prevent any refuse from entering the column 7 through the end 13 thereof. `When the device is in its normal position, the pocket 18 vwill also act to hold the smoke and fumes from smoldering articles within the container.

While l have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it

will be evident to those skilled in the art that modifications thereof may be construct ed without departing from the spirit of the said base, means to lock said cover to saidl base, a tubular column mounted upon said cover and projecting into said container` to form a ocket therearound between the lower end t ereof and the under surface of said cover and a conical extension located at the upper extremity of said column and constitutln the inlet to the interior thereof.

2. in ash receiver` comprisin a base constituting acontainer, a cover inged upon said base, means to lock said cover to said base, a tubular column mounted upon said cover and projecting into the interior of said container to form a ocket therearound between the lower end t ereof and the under surface of said cover, a gate pivotally mounted adjacent to the lower end ot said column and adapted to close the lower eX- tremity thereof, and a conical extension located at the upper extremity of said column, and constituting an inlet to the interior thereof.

An ash receiver comprising a base constituting a container, a cover hinged upon lsaid base and provided with a raised central portion forming a recess in the under side thereof, means to lock said cover to said base, a tubular column mounted upon the raised portion of said cover and projecting into the recess upon the interior thereof to form a pocket therearound between the lowmeedoet ity thereof, a vconical extension located at the upper extremity of said column, and constituting an inlet to the interior thereof and a rod `extending across the upper extremity of said conical extension, the opposite end portions thereof being bent upwardly and constituting supports for a cigar rest and a match box or similar smoking' accessories. c y f- 4.
