UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARY B. SMITH, OF ANOKA, MINNESOTA.
SPRINGBOTTOM FOR BEDS, &c.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, GARY B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anoka, in the county of Anoka and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Spring-Bottom for Beds, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to spring bottoms for beds and the like and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinaftershown and described.
The obj ect of the invention is to` provide a spring bottom of the character indicated which is of simple construction and which isso arranged that it may be compactly folded for shipment and storage purposes.
The bottom consists of a continuous cable made up of a series of resilient wires helically twisted together and formed into sections with loops twisted at the ends of the sections for the reception of pegs or other securing devices by means of which the struc ture may be supported upon the frame of a bed bottom. The said sections of the cable are held along the major portions of their lengths in parallel relation to each other by means of transversely disposed links hinged at their ends upon the said sections. The said links permit the cable sections to be folded laterally over each other in compact form and when the said cable sections are extended into a plane the upper surfaces of the said links lie in a plane above the pla-ne occupied by the cable sections. VWhen the cable sections are extendedthey are adapted to support a mattress or other cushion.
In the accompanying drawing:Figure l is a plan view of the lspring bed bottom shown in extended position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the spring bed bottom showing the same folded, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of the bed bottom cut on the line 3 8 of Fig. l.
The bed bottom consists of a continuous cable l which is' made up of a series of re-v silient wires helically twisted together. The said cable is formed into the sections 2 2 which lie parallel with each other along the major portions of their lengths and taper toward each other at `their end portion. The loops 3 are twisted in the cable at the end portions of the sections 2 and are adapted to receive pegs or other securing devices mounted upon the frame of the bed bottom.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 8, 1908.
Patented Dec. 1,` 1908.
Serial No. 414,955.
The sections 2 are held in parallel relation to each other by the transversely disposed links 4- and 5. The links 5 are arranged in pairs and are fixed at their end portions to the opposite cable sections 2. The links l are hinged at their end portions to opposite cable sections 2 and lie between the end portions of the links 5 of adjacent paths. By reason of the fact that the links 5 are fixed at their ends to the cable sections 2 they prevent lateral displacement or movement on the part of the links 4 along the sections 2. When the structure is extended as shown in Fig. l of the drawing the links 4f and 5 yoccupy a plane above that in which the sections 2 are located and the ends of the said links lie under the intermediate portions of the same and Vconsequently present no obstruction upon which articles of bed clothing may catch. When the bed bottom is not in use it may be folded up in the manner as shown in F ig. 2 and thus occupy but small space which possesses its advantages for shipping and storage purposes.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A spring bottom for beds comprising a continuous resilient cable consisting of helically twisted wires, said cable being formed into sections having intermediate parallel portions and converging end portions with loops twisted at the ends of the converging portions and links holding said sections in parallel relation.
2. A springbottom for beds comprising a continuous resilient cable formed into sections with loops located at the ends thereof, transversely disposed links holding the sections in parallel relation, said links being arranged alternately, singly and in pairs, the ends of the single links lying between the ends of the links arranged in pairs and being hingedly connected with the cable section and the ends of the links arranged in pairs being fixed .to the cable sections.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afhxed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GARY B. SMITH.
