Description

J. HOEY.
BED SPRING FABRIC.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. so, 1913.
1,094,787. I Patented Ap1128,1914.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR T @FFTQE.
JOHN HOEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IBED-SPRING FABRIC.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN Honx, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Fabrics, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in bed spring fabrics.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheaply manufactured, durable bed spring fabric which is particularly adapted for use in folding couches or the like, i. 6., a spring which may be folded on itself without injuring the fabric or springs in any way.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a folding couch frame, partly broken away, showing the bed spring in the same. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the links forming the bed spring, showing their connections.
Referring to the drawings: 2 and 3 indieate the separate frame sections of a folding couch or like structure, hinged together, as at i, so that one section may fold on top of the other, and A indicates in general the bed spring fabric which I have particularly constructed for such couches. The bed spring is here shown as consisting of a plurality of rows 5 of interlocked U-shaped links, which are attached to the head and foot rails of the bed, as indicated at 6 and 7, by helical springs 8 and 9. Each link comprising the fabric is constructed of a single piece of wire bent into an approximately U-shaped form, as shown in Fig. 2; and the outer ends of each link are then turned to form the eyes 10, while the inner connecting end is slightly bent inwardly, as indicated at 11.
A pair of recesses or seats 12 is thus formed at the end of each link, which not only forms an ideal connection for the eyes of the next connected link, but also separates these uniformly apart throughout the chain Specification of Letters Patent.

of connected links. The eyes connecting one link with another are made sufficiently large to permit the insertion of the transverse pivot rods 18 which extend across the full width of the bed spring, being clenched or having formed at their outer ends eyelets let and 15 to prevent their endwise removal.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that the bed spring fabric consists of rows of endwise connected U-shaped links which are yieldingly secured to the head and foot rails of the couch through the medium of the helical springs 8 and 9, and that transverse connection is secured by the rods 13. This construction permits the bed spring to be folded upon itself at any point, as many times as it is found necessary, for the simple reason that the transverse rods form pivots about which each line of links may spring; and an exceedingly durable and flexible structure is thus secured, which may be folded upon itself at any point.
\Vhile the bed spring structure here shown has been described as being particularly adapted for folding couches and the like, I also wish it understood that it is equally useful for rigid frame structures. Furthermore, the provision of the eyes 14 and 15 on the ends of the transverse rods 13 also makes it possible to insert helical springs between the side rails of the bed and the bed spring where this is found desirable.
I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim, and that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific form or design here shown.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A bed spring fabric composed of rows of connected links. said links being U-shaped, the free ends of the legs of which links are bent to form eyes, the connecting ends of the links being centrally inwardly bowed to form a pair of spaced seats which latter receive the eyes of the next adjacent links, independent transverse rods passed through the eyes of said rows of links and disposed meeyiev between the connecting ends of the links and In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the inner ends of the eyes that are eonmy hand in the presence of two subscribing nested to said last-named links and eyes Witnesses.
formed on the ends of said transverse rods JOHN HOEY. to limit the outward movement of the outermost rows of links by engagement with the eyes of said outermost rows of links.
