To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. Dsvrnsorn'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marseilles, in the county of Lasalle and State .of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Board Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsg-and to the letters .of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invent on relates to improvements in paper-board boxes of that type made from a single sheet of paper-board or like sheet material cut and scored to define wall members sists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed ed claims.

The improvements herein disclosed relate more specifically tothe construction by which the meeting walls of the box are 'oined.
, The blanks from which the two forms of box herein shown are made are alike with the exception ofcertain variations of the ila )S at the corners of the box. Like parts of oth forms of box, therefore, bear the same reference characters, diflerent reference characters being a plied to the parts shown in Figs. 9 to 16, inclbsive, which differ from the like parts shown in other figures.
The blank is made from a single rectangular sheet of paper-board and ishcrein shown as .an oblong rectangle. A -designates the body of the blank, and A A and A A the side and end wall sections respectively, di-

1n folding the blank as'shown in Fig. 1 to set-up the box, the side walls are first folded upwardly and thereafter the triangular flaps A are turned inwardly atright angles to the side wall sections. The end wall sections are then folded upwardly against said inturned triangular flaps A, as indicated in Fi 3. Thereafter the terminal flaps A are f0 ded downwardly and inwardly against the inner 'faces of the end walls and the inturned flaps A, said flaps folding about the score-lines a At this time, by reason of the integrality of the extension flaps A, with the terminal flaps A said extension flaps are folded down wardly inside the side walls, as indicated in Fig. 4, and when the terminal flaps are folded in place, the said extension flaps are brought to their final positions fiat against the inner faces of the side walls, and at right angles to v the said terminal flaps, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Furthermore, by reason of the integrality of the flaps A and A", when said extension flaps A are thus folded downwardly and inwardly against the inner faces of the side walls, the said flaps A are swung inwardly against the outer faces of the side the said integral fla s folding about the upper margins of the si e walls along the scored or folding lines a.
When the blank is made of relatively stiff or heavy paper or fiber-board, it is desirable to give to the rectangular extension flaps A some flexibility in order that they may be readily folded or tucked downwardly into the corners of the box without liability of placing such strain upon the folding parts as willtend to distort or tear the same. To this end saidiflaps A are shown in the drawings as being weakened by score-lines a extending diagonally across the same. The same effect may, however, be produced by otherwise scoring or lessening the stiffness of said flap.
The construction and arrangement of the forth, produces an extremely rigid construction of the box at the corners thereof, it being observed from an inspection of Fig. 6, that each corner of the box includes three layers The width of of material; two of said layers consisting of the flaps A A each made integral with one of the meeting walls and overlapping the adjacent wall, and the thirdlayer being formed. by the terminal or extension flaps A. The box has, therefore, greatcapacity to withstand at the corners thereof, lateral pressure tending to crush the same inwardly, and also to withstand pressure in the direction of the planes of said overlapping parts, tending to crush the same downwardly. When a comlete box is composed of two telescopic memers like that shown in Fig. 2, the corners of the box will be further strengthened by the addition of three additional layers of material, thereby providing very great strength at these oints with an economy in the quantity of material used in the construction of the box. Moreover, it will be observed that the construction described in the overlapping parts at the box-corners, produces a joint which maintains parts constituting the box corners in interlocked relation without requiring special fastening means to hold the same in position.- It will be observed in this connection that the ends of the side walls of the box are embraced between the folded flaps A A and said side walls cannot swing outwardly until the terminal flaps A and their extension flaps are raised out of their locking positions. It will be furthermore observed that no strains brought on .the box in the use thereof will have any tendency to lift or throw said ter minal and extension flaps out of their said locking positions.
In Figs. 9 to 16, inclusive, is shown a form of box wherein the interfolding flaps at the corners thereof are designed to be fastened together by aste or other fastening means. This form of hlank differs from that shown in Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive, in that the extension flaps A", corresponding with the extension flaps A hereinbefore described, are separated from the triangular flaps A corresponding with the flaps A by lines of severance 039. The interfolding parts of the box shown in Figs. 9 to 16, inclusive, occupy generally similar relations to each other as in the construction previously described. By reason of the separation, in this form of box, of the extension flaps A and A", it is necessary to provide some means for fastening at least the flaps A and A to the wall sections. Such fastening of the flaps may be effected by theuse of suitable clips or staples, or pastezniay be applied thereto whereby said flaps are caused to adhere to the parts against which they fold, when the box is set-up. By rea son of the arrangement of said flaps at the corners of the blank, paste may be readily. applied at one time to all of the flaps at each corner, as indicated at ct, and, whensaid flaps are folded upwardly against the wall sections, eachof the flaps will adhere and will be ermenently secured to the part'ageinst which it is folded.
Reference is herein made to certain walls of the box as side and end walls for convenience only in describing the box illustrated, and the use of the terms mentioned is not intended to limit the invention to a box halving the-oblong reetengulerl orm shown, it being obvious that the features of construction constituting my invention may be embodied in a box in which the'wails herein called the end walls may be longer than what are herein called the side walls, or to a square hox'or one in which the walls are allot the same length.
