SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,496, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed rm 24,1898. Serial No. 684,402. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown' that I, FRANK KNOBELOCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State 'of Ohio, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Paper Boxes,of which the following is" a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the construction of paper or pasteboard boxes or lids of the kind known as knockdown, and has for its object to provide a boxer lid formed from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable material and which may be easily brought or folded into shape, having at the same time strength and rigidity, the nature of my improvements being more fully hereinafter set forth and described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which the heavy lines indicate-the out portions of the blank and the dotted lines the scores or creases.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan viewof a blank of cardboard or other suitable material out and scored to be folded into shape and form my improved box or lid. Fig; 2'is a perspective view of the box or lid in process of construction. Fig. 3 is a perspective view 'of the box or lid complete.
Like letters of reference indicate identical parts in all the figures.
A is the portion of the blank that forms the bottom, B B the portions that form the sides, and G O the ends. In order to form the box or lid,'the side flaps B are folded over at the score (1 onto the side B, where it is preferably glued in place in order to produce a ncater appearance, though it need not be glued, if desired. The sides, composed of the side flaps B and the side B, are then folded up at right angles to the bottom A, as shown in Fig. 2. Integral with the side flaps B are extensions 1; I), provided with slits 'e, which extensions are then bent in at right angles to the sides, asshown in Fig. 2. Intermediate the sides l3 and ends C are wings c c, which for pur-' poses of appearance and that they may fold into place and at the same time have their edge'flush with the edge of the extensions 1) b are cut in the manner shown in' Fig. 1. These wings are scored diagonally, as shown, to permay be cut away from the end C, in which case it will not be necessary to score it diagonally; but it may then be folded in at right" angles to the sides in the same manner as the extensions 1) are folded in. I, however, prefer to leave it integral with the sides and ends and have it scored, as indicated, and fold into bellows folds, as with this construction the corners, which are subject to considerable wear, are greatly reinforced and strengthened. The ends 0' are provided with one or more tongues 61, which register with and are inserted in the slits e in the extensions b, as
shown in Fig. 3. In order t0 facilitate the If desired, however, the wings-c suitablematerial, the combination with bottom, sides, and ends, of wings intermediate the sides and ends, and extensions integral with the sides, said extensions provided with material, the combination with bottom, sides,
and ends, the sides and ends'scored 'to,. ;fold
upon themselves, of side extensions and wings integral with the sides, said extens ons and wings scored to fold in at right angles to the sides and lie intermediate the overlapped portions of the end fiaps,,the overlapping portion of the endsprovided with tongues register ng Joe with slits in the side extensions whereby the sides and ends are locked in position, substantially as shown and described. 3. In a box orlid cut and scored from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable the overlapping end flaps, said end flaps pro-V vided with tongues which enter slits in the side extensions to lock the sides and ends in place, substantially as shown and described. 4. In a knockdown box or lid cut and scored I from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable materiahthe. combination with bottom,
sides, and cnds,of side flaps having side extensions, said extensions haying one or more slits, one or more tongues on 'the end flaps to be insertedin said slits and lock the sides and ends in place, substantially as and in the manner described.
5. In a box or lid, cut and scored from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable material, the combination with bottom A,sides B, B, B, B, and ends 0, O, G, C, the sides B, B, and ends 0, C, scored to fold'upon themselves, of side extensions 1), integral only with side flaps'B', and having slits e, and scored to fold in at right angles to the sides, and
tongues d, integral with the overlapping end a flaps C, said ton ues d registering with the slits e, in the side extensions, substantially 35 as andin the manner described.
