F. H. HOUGHLAND.
FOLDING BOX.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 6. 1915.

FOLDING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, l ilfi.
Original application filed September 2, 1915, Serial No. 48,636. Divided and this application filed. December 6, 1915. Serial No. 65,258.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. HOUGI-I- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding boxes, this application being a division of my application for folding boxes filed September 2nd, 1915, Serial No. 18,636, one object of the present invention being the provision of a parcel post box, having five parallel portions, the ends of which are free and so arranged that when secured together, locking flap of the center portion will cooperate with the two flaps of the two outer portions to lock the ends sealed against accidental opening.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view and which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the details of construction hereinafter set forth, the invention, however, being limited only by what is claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of the box partially closed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one closed end of the box, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the bottom of the box and 11 and 12 the two side walls thereof. Each side wall is provided with the projecting portion 13, which is diagonally scored as at 13', so that the same may be folded as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As the side walls are folded upwardly and parallel, the portions 13 will assume their folded position, the flap 17 of the bottom and which is integral with one edge of each of the portions 13, will be upon the inside so that the locking flap 18, with its tabs 18, may be folded outwardly and fit between the diagonal edges of the portions 13 and the flap 17.
The outer portion 19 of the box is provided with the flap 20, which in turn is provided with the foldable locking iiap :20, while the other outer portion 21 is provided with the flap 21, carrying the foldable look ing flap 21.
Thus it will be seen that after the flaps assume the position as shown in Fig. 1,that the foldable flap 20 is inserted between. the flap 18 and the flap 17, and finally the flap 21 is inserted in the same place exteriorly of the flap 20. By this means a rigid triple sealed box is provided.
What I claim, as new, is
A folding box made from a single sheet of material and scored to provide five parallel portions, two of which are adapted to fit coextensively, flaps provided at both ends of each portion, the central and two adjoining flaps being integral, and the adjoining flaps being folded diagonally away from their junction with the base of the central flap, a double terminaled locking tab carried by the central flap, whereby when the central flap is folded to close the box the adjoining flaps will be folded upon the outside thereof and present spaces between their diagonal folds and the central flap to receive the looking tabs, and tabs carried by the remaining flaps to cooperate with the locking terminal of the central flap to additionally seal and lock the box closed.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
FRANK H. HOUGHLAND.
