DELBERT U. MGKEEN, OF TAMA, IOWA.
BARREL-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.
App ication filed June 7, 1907. Serial No 377,757.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELBERT U. MOKEEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Tama, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an im proved closure for barrels or like receptacles and aims to provide a novel form of cover which is so designed as to effectively protect the contents of the barrel from rain and dust.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a cover of this character which can be cheaply formed of sheet material and which is sufficiently rigid to withstand any hard usage to which it may be subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting .the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the construction of the shell.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the cover which is of a shape corresponding to that of the receptacle in connection with which the cover is to be employed, and in the present instance is shown as circular. An annular rim 2 projects laterally from the periphery of the body portion 1 and forms a means for engaging the top or upper portion of the barrel or other receptacle. A pair of oppositely extending tongues 3 stamped from the central portion of the top or body portion 1 of the cover and cooperate with each other and the portion of the cover between the same are bent rearwardly to form the handle 4 which is hollow and constitutes a convenient means for manipulating the cover.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention as shown in the'drawin 's the tongues 3 are formed by approximate y semi-circular cuts in the top 1 of the cover and when bent rearwardly leave a pair of approximately semi-circular openings in the top of the cover. In order to prevent rain or dust from reaching the interior of the barrel or receptacle through these openings, a shell 5 is applied to the lower face of the top 1 of the cover. This shell has a dished formation so as to receive the handle 4 and has the edge portions thereof soldered or otherwise connected to the cover so as to prevent rain or dust from obtaining access to the receptacle. In the present instance this shell 5 is formed from a piece of sheet material having a pair of incisions 6 formed in opposite sides thereof, the edges of the incisions being overlapped to impart a dished or concave formation to the shell. It may also be noted that the shell 5 serves as a reinforcing means for the cover and enables the same to withstand a considerable amount of weight without bending or being in any manner injured. This manner of constructing the cover also has the advantage of providing a plain upper face which is free from all projections and therefore permits boxes or like members to obtain a firm seat upon the cover.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A cover of the character described, formed of sheet material and having a pair of oppositely extending tongues stamped therefrom, the said tongues being bent rearwardly and cooperating with each other and the portion of the cover between the same to form a handle for manipulating the cover.
2. A cover of the character described comprising a body portion having openings formed therein, and a shell a plied to the body portion and formed of a p ate provided in its sides with incisions the edges of which are overlapped to impart a concave formation to the plate.
3. A cover of the character described comprising a body portion having approximately semi-circular tongues stamped from opposite sides thereof and bent rearwardly to form a handle, and a shell applied to the inner face of the body portion of the cover and having a concave formation to receive the rearwardly bent tongues forming the handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
