Description

' Iran STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN'A. MevoY, or TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
COVER-FASTENERQ Application filed March 29, 1912. Serial No. 687,076.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVARREN A. MoVoY, a
citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Oover- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to, improvements in cover seals and fasteners for receptacles and containers.
One object of the invention is to. provide a cover seal and fastener which will effectually prevent pilfering or accidental. opening of the cover.
Another object is to provide a cover seal and fastener which may be quickly and easily applied without the use of a. machine or tool. 1
Still another object is to provide a cover fastener and seal which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, eflicient and reliable in operationand well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of con struotion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the upper end of a pail showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the upper end of a pail showing another slightly modified construction of the invention.
Referring to the drawings throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts the numeral 1 denotes a pail or other receptacle which, while being here shown as cylindrical in shape and as formed of stayes, may be of any other shape and construction. The inner edge of the upper end of the pail is beveled off as at 2 forming a shoulder for a purpose hereinafter described. In the inner surface of the pail immediately below the beveled edge 2 is formed an annular notch or groove 3, said notch or groove having a flat under edge 4 and a bev eled lower wall 5.
Engaging with the upper end of the pail is a cover 6 made of sheet metal, having combined or formed integral therewith a fastening band 7. On the lower edge of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
receptacle engaging portion of the band is formed an annular outwardly and upwardly projecting locking flange 8, which when the band is inserted in the upper endof the receptacle and the flange forced past the beveled edge 2 will spring into engagement with the notch or groove 3 thereby locking the cover in position on the receptacle.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, engaged with the upper end of the pail is a cover 9 here shownin the form of a flat disk which corresponds with the sheet metal cover 6. It is to be observed that the fastening band 7 of this construction is preferably formed independently of the cover 9, and at the upper edge of said band is formed an annular channel shaped flange 10 adapted to receive the edge of the cover 9, which is engaged with said flange when the same is formed. The lower edge of the receptacle engaging portion of the band is formed and applied in the same manner as the receptacle engaging portion of the band shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In the manufacture of receptacles such' as herein shown and described, more or less variation in size frequently occurs unless.
special care is taken in the formation, which entails extra expense. In the cover fastener usually employed, and especially those which are crimped into engagement with the receptacle, this variation in size of the latter is a serious obstacle and prevents the proper fastening of the cover. Owing to the resiliency of the fixed lower edge of my improved fastening band and the angled upper edge, or shoulder of the receptacle, my
anism for the cover will practically operate automatically when engaged with the receptacle and no machine or instrument of any kind is requiredfor applying the fastening. It will be further noted that when the fastening mechanism is in operative-engagement with the receptacle that the cover.
will be firmly secured and sealed and cannot be removed without destroying or damaging the cover or the fastening mechanism, thus positively protecting the goods in the receptacle. The construction of the cover engaging portion of the fastening band and the manner in which said portionis engaged, whether integral, or with the edge of the cover, effectually prevents the cover from being split (if constructed of wood) by accident or design. Even though the cover should split however, the same will be securely held by the fastening band.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a receptacle provided at its inner upper side with a beveled surface and below said beveled surface with an annular groove, a cover comprising a plate provided with means adaptedto eX- tend under the intermediate portion of the plate and downwardly against the beveled surface of said receptacle, said means so disposed as to adapt said downwardly projecting portion to fit snugly against the beveled surface, the said means being provided at its lower extremity with a flange adapted to spring into engagement with the groove.
2. In combination with a receptacle provided at its inner, upper side with a beveled surface and below the said beveled surface with an annular groove, a cover comprising a plate having its edge portion folded back under the intermediate portion of the plate and provided with a conical band depending from the inner edge of the said bent back portion, said band adapted to fit snugly against the beveled surface, the said band being provided at its lower edge with a flange adapted to be sprung into engagement with the groove.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, 1n presence of two witnesses.
