IMPROVED FLOOD-GATE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that LSAMUEL B. SHoUP, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new andimproved FloodfGate, for the purpose of preventing stock, or animals, from passing into or out of an enclosed eld, and at the same time allowing a freepassage for water and drift-wood down the stream overlwhich said ood-gate is placed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to 'the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in having the pieces A A, 85o., of 'any kind of metal or wood, by a rod, C, of any kind of metal, or Wood, passing through them, and- .bybolting pieces, B B, &c., on to pieces, Y A, by rods, so as to allow them to Work free and easy,
as is rshown in Figure l.
Piece H is notched in front and back, allowing pieces 'A to set into it in front, and pieces B at the back,
preventing them from being moved sideways.
Piece Gis placed behind pieces B, preventing them from being moved up stream. Y
Posts F F may'be set on to a base, D D, or into the ground.
Piece E prevents the posts F F from drawing together when the rod O is tightened up, and also sustains rod C byrod I passing through it and around rod C, as is shown in iig. l.
In an ordinary stage of water, pieces A. A and B B will remain in position, as` in Figure 2, and, in high water, will assume position as in Figure 3, allowing Water and drift to pass through.
When the water falls to its usual level, the pieces A A willassume their position, and pieces B B can be easily placed into; theirs.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
VThe combination of the pieces A, hung on rod C, which have pieces B bolted tothern, with the posts F and base D,Whe'n strengthened by the brace E, all constructed and arranged as described, as and for the purpose specied. 4
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
sAML. n SHOUP.
