BOTTLE AND STOPPER THEREFOR.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21,1908.
Application filed August 5 1907. Serial No. 387.017.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAMASO RIVAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles and Stoppers Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a bottle provided with an air-and fluid tight stopper, the bottle being adapted particularly for collecting water andbther fluids for bacteriological examinations; and in such connection it re lates to the constructive arrangement of the bbttle and stopper so that the fluid contents may be thoroughly protected against extraneous elements or floating germ life to adapt the bottle especially for collecting fluids in the making of bacteriological ex'aminations. The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the. following description taken in conadapted to fit the stopper of my invention, as
shown in Fig. 1, thereto to render the fluid contents of the bottle air tight and thereby proof against entrance of extraneous matter or floating germ life to such contents, while the bottle is stoppered.
Referring to the drawings 4, is the bottle of glassin shape round, oblong or square and having preferably a tapering neck 5, with an upper projection forming a flange 6, and. an intermediate projection forniin a circular seat 7, as clearly illustrated in ig. 1, for a purpose to be presently more fully explained. 8, is the stopper of glass or other hard gritty material having a solid tapering ,body 9, adapted to snugly fit the inner wall of the nccr 5, the upper portion of which is provided with a projection forming a flange 10, for engaging the-fingers therewith so as to permit of ready turning of the stopper in the neck of the bottle and projectim downwardly from the flange 10, is provided preferably a conical shaped wall 11. The depending wall I 1] tapers in an opposite direction to the j body 9, of the stopper fitting the neck of the g bottle and arranged to seat with the projection 7, to render the stopper in its connection with the bottle. air and fluid tight so as to especially adapt the bottle for the collecting l of fluids in the. making of bacteriological examinations, because the contents is thoroughly protected against the influence of extraneous matter or floating germ life. Moreoven-the stopper having two points of bearing contact with projections 6 and 7, of the bottle 4, prevents any possibility by capillary attraction of foreign elements or fluids gaining access to the interior of the bottle, stoppered. The bottle as so arranged is easily stoppered as well as permits of ready discharge of the fluid contents. Around the stopfper 8, is applied a fibrous or othe material to be drawn around the dependin tapering wall 11, of the stopper and crimpe or folded neck 5, and around which is passed a wire 13, provided with a designation tag 14, as illustrated in Fig. 3 The closure 12, is adapted to envelop the stopper in such a manner as to tampering with the contents of the bottle, when filled and sealed, as at 15, and the tag is intended for containing matter to show an analysisof the contents of the bottle thus sealed. v Having thus described the nature and ob-' jects of my ,invention what I claim as ne\v and desire to secure by Letters Patentis- 1. A bottle provided with a neck having a projection forming a seat, and a stopper provided With a tapering body fitting the bottleneck and having a depending wall ta ering in an opposite direction to said'body a apted to seat with the projection of the bottle-neck, substantially as and for, the purposes set forth.
2. A bottle provided with a neck having a rojection forming a seat and a stopper having a body fitting the interior of the neck and having a flaring Wall adapted to seat with the projection of the bottle-neck, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A bottle provided with a neck having a projection forming a seat, a stopper fitting the bottle-neck and having a depending tapering wall ada ted to seat with the projec-. tion of the bott e.-ncck and a closure or envelop for said stopper adapted to be secured orming anenvelop or closure 12, adapted thoroughly guard or protect the same against into a contracted form-about the base of the Q I 4 SWQQQQ t0 the bottle-meek, substantially as and for stantielly as and for the urposes set forth. 10 the purposes set forth; In testimony Where f, have hereunto set 4. A bottle provided with a neck having a my signature in the presence of two sub projection'fon'ning a seat, a stopper fitting; scribing Witnesses. the bottle-neck and having a depending Wall adapted to seat with the projection. of the bottle-neck, a closure or envelop for said Witnesses: stopper and means for securing and sealing THOMAS M. SMITH, the closure 01' envelop to sai L byttle, sub j GENEVIEVE M. CONNERTON.
