CANOPY FOR FOLDING BEDS.
N0. 277,372, Patented May 8,1883.
N. PETil-IS. mmum n fier. wmin m ac NITED STATES PATENT FFI'CE,
ANDREW STEVELEY, OF FRANKFORT, INDIANA.
CANOPY FOR FOLDING BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,372, dated May 8, 1883.
Application filed March 24, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW STEVELEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Canopies for Folding Beds, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificatiom,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding beds of the wardrobe type; and it consists in providing the same with acanopy-frame, which is pivoted to the upper portion of the side bars of the imitation wardrobe, which pivoted bar is provided, near its center,-with a strap, which passes over a transverse rod at the base of said side bars, from which it is continued and attached to the upper part of the front end of the mattress'case, the aforesaid canopy being weighted, so that when the mattress-frame is raised the canopy will fall and lie within the side bars of the imitation wardrobe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view, showing the bed lowered and the canopy raised. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, showing the same closed in full lines and open in dotted lines.
A A represent the side bars'of theimitation wardrobe-frame, which is provided with a top and back. Within this frame, adjacent to the top thereof, is pivoted at its rear end a canopysupporting frame, B, which is secured to the side bars, A A. This canopy-frame is attached to a transverse bar, which is provided at its central portion with projecting arm a, to which is attached a flexible strap, which passes downwardly adjacent to the back of the frame and over a transverse bar, D, from whence'it is continued upwardly and attached at its other end to the raised head-board D of the mattressframe. This head-board may be provided with any suitable means whereby said strap can be tightened. V
Pivoted to the foot of the side bars, A A, is a mattress-frame, which is of ordinary construction, which mattress-frame folds up within the top and side bars, so as when not in use to make an ornamental piece of furniture.
I am aware that prior to my invention folding beds have been provided with canopies, and I do not claim the same, broadly.
From the annexed drawings the operation of my invention will be fully understood.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding bed of the wardrobe type, the side bars, A A, provided at their lower end with a transverse bar or roller, D, and above the same with apivoted mattress-frame having a head-board, as shown, in combination with the pivoted canopy-supporting frame B, having aprojecting arm, a, weighted end, and connecting-straps, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW STEVELEY.
Witnesses: I
ENos HOOVER, W. P. ASHLEY.
