MATCH-BOX.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
.application tiled. December 18, 1912. Serial No. 737,537.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, lomos S. LINGNnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Glastonbury, in the county of l-lartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certaln new and useful improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
'lhis invention comprehends improvements in match boxesand relates more particularly to those which areespecially adapted for personal use.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a pocket match box, which shall be of extremely simple construction, cheap to manufacture, easy to ll, and of' such a construction that a match may be easily removed therefrom.
Janother and more specic object of the invention resides in the provision of a match box of this type, comprising a telescoping tubular body portion closed at each end and provided with slots which are adapted to register to permit the withdrawal of a match.
The invention also aims to generally im prove devices of this nature to render them more efficient, useful, and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
E or a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description, and accompanying drawings, in which,
lT1 igure l is a side elevation of my in vention, showing the slots in registration, llig. 2 is a similar view, showing the slots out of registration, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the two sections attached, and, Fig. l is a transverse sectional view taken upon the plane of line i-t of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals A designates generally, my improved pocket match box, which comprises the telescoping sections 5 and 6, said sections being tubular and closed at their outer ends by the walls i?. The walls l are relatively thick and are of a somewhat greater diameter than the diameter of the sections 5 andv 6 and have their periphery knurled, as clearly shownin the drawing. The sections 5 and 6 are preferably cylindrical in cross section and formed of sheet-metal. Fl`he sections are provided with the longitudinal end opening slots 8 and 9, respectively, which extend practically the full length of the same. The section 5 is adapted to telescope over the section 6 and be held against accidental rotation thereon by friction. ilhe sections are capable of a slight springy action and may therefore be constructed of such a relative size as to bind tightly against one another so as to hold their relative positions.
The match box is filled by disconnecting the sections and closed by telescoping the sections and rotating them to bring the slots 8 and 9 out of registration. When it is desired to,extract a match or matches from said box, the sections 5 and 6 are turned by means of their lmurled ends so as to bring the slots 8 and 9 in registration.
llt is to be understood that my invention may be used for articles other than matches, such as tooth picks, etc., and that it may be varied in size to accommodate different lengths of matches, tooth picks, etc. lt will be noted, however, that my invention is, to a certain extent, adjustable and will accommodate itself to articles of various lengths, inasmuch as the sections do not have to be entirely telescoped form an operative device.
Having thns described my invention, what l claim is 5:-
A. match bei; comprising two hollow telescopic members, enlarged heads at the opposite ends of said members forming closures, each member having a longitudinal. slot extending inwardly frcm its open end and terminating in spaced relation to its head, said members being rotatable one within. the other for bringing the slots into coincidence for discharging a match bein separable for filling the smaller member with matches.
ln testimony whereof l afha my signataire i
