Be it known that I, SAMUEL KIPER, a citii Zen of the United States, residing at Duff, in
the county of Grayson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in -screens for fireplaces; and the object of the invention is the provision of a screen of this character which will effectually prevent s arks from passing from the fireplace into tlie room yand which can be cheaply constructed.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a screen of this character which will be very light, so that the same can be rladily handled and moved from place to ace.
p The invention, broadly stated, comprises an open skeleton frame adapted to surround the open portion of the fire lace and a screen secured to the front an sides of said frame.
In the drawings, wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown, and wherein like letters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved screen, and

.Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates the frame of my improved screen, which is preferably formed of strap-iron and which is substantially L- shaped in cross-section. The frame A comprises the back portion B and the base C. The back portion B is formed of strap-iron and consists of the central ortion b and the downwardly-extending side portions b, which are formed by folding the end portions of the strap-iron upon themselves at right angles. The extremities of the downwardly extendin portions b are bent forwardly at right ang es to form supports b2 for the back portion B. The base C comprises a central portion c and rearwardly-extending portions c, which are formed by folding the extremities of the strap-iron of which the base portion is formed upon themselves at right angles and which when the parts of the frame are assembled are adapted to underlie the portions b2 of the'baclr portion B and are secured thereto by rivets or other suitable fastenings. The front of the frame is formed lby a plurality of braces D, which connect the 1 central portion t of the back B and the central portion c of the base C. Each of the braces D comprise a piece of strap-iron which yhas its u per end bent downwardly and riveted to t e front sidev of the central portion b of the back B and which has its lower end bentrearwardly at d to overlie the upper side of the central portion c of the base C and then upwardly at d, the end of said upwardly-bent portion being riveted to the under side of the body portion of the brace. The rearwardly-extending portions of Athe braces D serve as additional supports for the frame and also prevent said braces from sagging. The frame is completed by the laterally-extending brace E, which is formed of portion e, which is secured by rivets to the under side of the braces D, and rearwardlyextending side portions e, which have their extremities riveted to the front faces of the downwardly-extending portions l1 of the back B. To complete the screen, a piece of Wire-screening is secured to the front and sides of the frame, the edges of said screening being folded over the rear faces of the back and base portions B and C of the frame and secured thereto by stri s G of strap-iron bolted to the rear faces ofisaidback and base portions B and C. If desired, a single piece of strap metal U-shaped inform may be used to clamp the edges of the screening to the back of the back vortion B, and a similarshaped piece for c amping theedges of the screening to the under side of the base C may be employed, or separate strips may be employed for clamping the edges of the screening to the central and side ortions of the back and base. A pair of hoo is h are secured in any suitable manner to opposite sides of the frame, which are adapted to engage eyes secured to the wall on opposite sides of the iireplace and hold the screen in position.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form and construction shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many minor changes might be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In a screen for fireplaces, an open frame comprising a U-shaped back portion, a U- shaped base portion extending from the extremities of said back portion, a plurality of longitudinally-disposed inclined braces conf necting the upper part of the back portion and the forward part of the base portion, the
lower portions of sald braces being bent rearwardly to form additional supports for the frame, and terminating at theirrear ends in upwardly-extending braces, the upper ends of which are secured to the longitudinally-disposed braces intermediate their connection with the back and base portions of the framework, and screening covering said framework.
3. In a screen for fireplaces, an open frameupper ends of which are secured to the longix tudinally-disposed braces intermediate their connection with the. back and base portions of the framework, a transversely-disposed U- shape brace member connecting said longitudinally-disposed braces intermediate the ends thereof and having its ends secured to the back portion intermediate the top and bottom thereof, and screening covering said .i5 f
