To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEssE HOLLOWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doe Run, in the county of St.Francois and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Folding and Adjustable Chair, of which the following is a specification.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel and simple structure, which can be readily adjusted, compactly folded, is strong, and durable, and is cheap to manufacture.

The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is avertical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the embodiment illustrated, spaced rockers 5 are employed that are connected by suitable rounds 6. Rearwardly and upwardly inclined leg members 7 are pivoted frame on opposite at their lower ends to the front ends of the rockers by means of a round 8, which, as shown in Fig. 3, passes through the rockers, and is engaged in the end of the members 7, said members being located outside the rockers. Rear leg members 9 are pivoted by bolts 10 or other suitable devices to inter-- mediate portions of the leg members 7, and have their lower ends disposed outside the rockers 5. Said lower ends are connected by a round 10, which as shown in Fig. 2 and indicated in Fig. 1, is adapted to be placed in either of the sets of notches 11 formed in the upper margins of the rockers 5.

A seat frame is employed comprising side bars 12 connected by a front round 13, and two rear rounds 14 and 1.5. The frame is ivotally connected between its ends to the eg members 7 by bolts 16, said bolts being disposed below the bolts 10, which connect the rear leg members to the members 7. A seat bottom of flexible material, such .as cloth, leather or the like, and designated 17 in the drawings, surrounds therounds 13 and 14, and thus is connected to the seat sides of its pivot axis. The upper ends of the rearwardly inclined leg members 7 are connected by a round 18, and

a flexible back 19 of cloth, leather or other material, surrounds the round 15 and the round 18, thus limiting the downward swinging movement of the rear end of the seat.

Hooks 20 are pivotally connected, as shown at 21 to the rear portion of the seat frame and have bills 22 arranged to engage in eyes 23 projecting from opposite sides of the rear leg members 9 below the seat. The hooks are provided with retaining dogs 24 pivoted thereto and coacting with the bills of said hooks, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.

When the chair is set u the rear leg members 9 are arranged with the lower rounds 10 in either of the sets of seats 11 of the rockers. If the round 10 is in the foremost notches, the bills 22 of the hooks 20 are engaged in the rear eyes 23, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. If the rounds are in the rear notches or seats, then the hooks are engaged in the front eyes 23, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be evident that the hooks prevent the upward tilting of the rear end of the seat, while the downward movement is prevented by the back 19, which constitutes holding means for the purpose. In folding the chair, the hooks 20 are disengaged from the eyes 23, the rear leg members are swung outwardly alongside the outer ends of the leg members 7, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the seat is tilted until it lies between the leg members 7, and the rockers are moved to a position alongside the same. Thus the chair can be compactly folded, and it will be evident from the structure, as disclosed, that the same may be cheaply manufactured.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein described inventionwill be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Ina chair of the character set forth, the combination with relatively adjustable leg members, of a pivotal connection between the members, a seat pivoted to one leg member at one side of and separate from the .legs pivoted to the inclined legs and having adjustable engagements with the rockers, a

seat pivoted to the rearwardly inclined legs,

and hooks carried by the seat and adjustably connected to the rear legs.

In a chair of the character set forth, the combination with rockers, of rearwardly inclined leg members pivoted at their lower ends to the front ends of the rockers, rear legs pivoted to the inclined legs and having adjustable engagements with the rockers, a seat pivoted to the rearwardly inclined legs, and adjustable and detachable connections between the seat and the rear legs.

In a chair of the character set forth, the combination with leg members, of a seat frame comprising side bars pivoted to the leg members, a front round connecting the front ends of the side bars and two spaced rear rounds connecting the rear ends thereof, a seat bottom surrounding the front round and one of the rear rounds, and a flexible back having its lower end surrounding the other of the rear rounds, said seat and back passing between said rear rounds.

5. In a chair of the character set forth, the

combination with spaced rockers, of rearwardly inclined leg members pivoted at their lower ends to the front ends of said rockers, rear leg members pivoted at their up er ends to the lnclined leg members and having their lower ends adjustably associated with the rockers, a seat frame pivoted between its ends upon the inclined leg members, a seat bottom connected to the seat frame on opposite sides of its pivot axis, a flexible back connected to the upper ends of the inclined leg members and having its lower end connected to the rear end of the seat frame, and hooks carried by the rear end of the seat frame and detachably and adjustably engaged with the rear leg.

6. In a chair of the character set forth, the

combination with relatively adjustable leg members, of a pivotal connection between the members, a seat pivoted to one leg member, a detachable and adjustable connection between the seat and the other leg member, and rockers pivoted to certain of the leg members, the other leg members being adj ustably engaged with said rockers.
