BlCYCLE FORKNHEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,724, dated May 31, 1898.

Be it known that I, FRANK B. OASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Fork- Head; and I do hereby declare that the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.

My invention relates to the fork-head or fork-crown of a bicycle; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the parts for connecting the fork sides to the steering-post. This connection is made by two short pieces of tubing pressed into slots in the fork sides and in the post fitted to receive them. A crown-piece is preferably provided, covering over the tops of the tubes and fork sides, and trusses or braces for the interior of the tubes. These parts, however, are not essential.

My invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the same numerals of reference indicate the same parts in all the views.

Figure I is a vertical section of the forkhead. Fig. II is a horizontal section. Fig. III is a perspective view of the parts separated, showing a tube, brace, lower end of post, and upper end of fork side. Fig. IV is a plan of the crown-piece.

In the drawings,1 indicates the post,form ed with slots 2 2 in each side of its lower end, and 3 3 the fork sides, formed with slots 4 4 in the inner sides of their upper ends, all the slots being of such length and width as to receive snugly the short pieces of tubing 5 5. By this simple means a strong fork-head is produced and a secure connection between the fork sides and the post. I prefer in addition to provide a crown-piece 6, stamped or otherwise formed from a single piece of metal, having a perforation 7, iitted to receive the post, and formed, as best shown in Fig. IV, to cover the open upper ends of tubes and fork sides, also reinforcing-braces 8 8, of any desirable form, iitted'to the interior ofthe tubes. This fork-head is very strong and neat in appearance, also simple, cheap, and easy to construct. Forgings, machinen work, and more complicated pressed parts are avoided.

It will be seen that the tubes act as interior braces to the fork sides at their upper ends.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a bicycle fork-head, the combination of the steering-post slotted at its lower end, fork sides slotted at their upperI ends and tubes fitted to said slots to connect the fork sides to the post, substantially as described and shown.

2. In a bicycle forlnhead, the combination of the steering-post provided with double slots on both sides oi' its lower end, fork sides provided with double slots on the inner sides of their upper ends, tubes fitted to said slots, connecting the fork sides to the post, braces fitted to the interior of said tubes,aud a crownpiece having a central perforation forreceiw ing the post and formed to cover over the open ends of the fork sides and tubes, substantially as described and shown.

3. In a bicycle fork-head, the combination of the steering-post provided with double slots on both sides of its lower end, fork sides provided with double slots on the inner sides of their upper ends, tubes litted to said slots for connecting the fork sides to the head,a crownpiece having a central perforation for receiving the post and formed to cover the open ends of the tubes and fork sides, and braces fitted to the interior of the tubes formed of a single piece of metal bent to bear with one edge against the post, and with two edges against the fork sides at the point of connection with said tubes, substantially as described and shown.
