UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WILLIAM CARTER, or ABILEN-E, TEXAS.
, E L' EcTfllc-LlGtHT HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 30, 1.906.
To all whom, .it .may concern:
TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abilene, in the county of Taylor and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Electric-Light Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
.Thisinvention relates to-hangers for incandescent lamps, and has for its object to provide ,a comparatively simple inexpensive hanger designed for attachment .to a
ceiling or other suitable support and by means of which the lamp maybe conveniently raised or lowered and supported at any desired height. 1
A further object .of the invention is to pro.
vide a hanger having a roller j ourna'led therein for engagement with the flexible lamp- .supporting conductor, said roller being free to revolve in one direction and locked against rotationin the opposite direction.
. A further object is to provide a weight adaptedto engage the flexible conductor and-forming a counterbalance for the lamp, and means whereby the conductor may be readily placed in position on or detached.
from the hanger.
A stillfurther object is to generally improve this class of devices so asto add to the utility, durability, and efliciency, as well as to reduce, the cost of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction maybe resorted to within the scope of the-sap ended claims.
In tlie accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hanger constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is .an end view of the hanger detached. Fig. '3 is a perspective view of the hanger, roller, latch, and locking member detached. Fig. 4 is a side elevation illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all .of the figures of the drawings.
The improved device consists of a supporting bracket or hanger 5, provided with terminal angularly-dis osed arms 6 and 7, one of which is formed with a threaded extension 8 for attachment to a ceiling or other Be it known that 1, JAMES WILLIAM OAR- 1 suitable support 9, ,as shown. Extending laterally from the bracket or hanger dis a pin or stub-shaft 10,, upon whichfis journaled a pulley or roller 11, having one-side thereof formed witha pluralityof recesses or notches 12, adapted to receive thepin 1,3 of a spring-lockmg member. 114. The walls of the notches 12 are inclined tor beveledetoward the shoulders 12, while the tree end of the pin 13 is correspondingly beveled, so that when the roller is turned in one direction the inclined face of the pin 13 will ride -.over the inclined walls of the notches without effecting theroller, and when the latter is turned in the K0 posite direction the pinwill bear against t e shoulders '12, and thus lock the roller against further movement. PiVOted tothe arm.6 is a swinging latch 1.5, the free end of which is provided with a slot .or recess 16, .ada ted to receive a screw or similar locking-device 17, threaded in an opening in the lower arm 7. The locking member 14 and latch 15 are retained in position on the arm 6 by means of ascrewor pin 18, said latch being formed with an opening or apertnre to permit the passage of the locking-pin l3.
Secured to a ceiling-block or rosette 19 is one end of a flexible conductor 20, the opposite end of which passes over the roller 11 and terminates in a lamp 21. Engaging the conductor 20 is a roller 22, provided with a depending weight 23, which forms a counterba ance for the lamp 21, so that the latter may be conveniently raised or lowered {and supported at any desired height. The roller 11 is free to revolve in one direction when the lamp is lowered, but is locked against rotation in the opposite direction so as to prevent the weight from having a tendency to. elevate the lamp, the friction between the rope and the grooved face of the roller serving to retard the upward movementof the lamp. The latch 15 is free to swing laterally to open position, so as to expose the notched or recessed side of the roller 11,, and thereby- In operation when it is desired to attach or detach the conductor the clamping-screw 17 is released, after which the pin 13 is disengaged from the notches 12 by exerting a lateral pull on the terminal handle 24 of the locking member and swinging said member and latch laterally to open position. The
trated a modified form of the device in which a plurality of hangers or brackets are disposed'at spaced intervals on the ceiling or other suitable support, and the flexible conductor threaded through the rollers to form a series of depending loops 25, each seen that there is provided an extremely simple and inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A hanger provided with means for attachment to a support and having a pin extending laterally from one side thereof, a roller journaled on the pin, a latch bearing against the pin for preventing accidental displacement of the roller, a flexible lampsupporting conductor engaging the roller, and a weight carried by the conductor and forming a counterbalance for the lamp.
2. A hanger provided with means for attachment to a support, a roller journaled in the hanger and having notches formed in one side thereof, a spring-locking member carried by the hanger and adapted to engage said notches for locking the roller against rotation in one direction, a flexible lamp-supporting conductor engaging the roller, and a weight carried by the conductor and forming a counterbalance for the lamp.
3. A hanger provided with means for attachment to a support, a roller journaled in the hanger and having one side thereof formed with a plurality of notches, a latch engaging the roller and movable laterally to inoperative position, a locking member carried by the latch and passing through an opening in the latter for engagement with the notches, and a flexible lamp-supporting conductor carried by the roller.
4. A hanger comprising a bracket, provided with angularly-disposed arms one of which is formed with an extension for attachment to a support, a pin extending laterally from the hanger, a roller journaled on the pin and having notches formed in one side thereof, a latch pivoted to the hanger and engaging the pin, a locking member carried by the latch and provided with a lug passing through an opening in the latch for engagement with the notches, a flexible la1np-supporting conductor engaging the roller, and a weight carried by the conductor and forming a counterbalance for the lamp.
5. A hanger comprising a bracket provided with angularly-disposed arms and an intermediate laterally-extending pin, a rolller journaled on the pin and having a plurality of notches formed in one side thereof, a latch pivotally mounted for swinging movement on the hanger and forming a closure for one end of the same, a spring-catch carried by the latch and provided with a locking-pin passing through an opening in the latch for engagement with the notches, means for looking the latch in closed position, a flexible lamp-supporting conductor suspended from the roller, and a weight carried by the coniiuctor and forming a counterbalance for the 6. A hanger comprising a bracket provided with angularly-disposed arms and an intermediate pin, a roller ]ournaled on the pin and having a plurality of notches formed in one side thereof, a latch pivoted to one of the arms and forming a closure for one side of the hanger, said latch being provided at its free end with an inwardly-extending slot,a spring-locking member carried by the latch and having a locking-pin passing through an opening in the latch for engagement with the notches, a clamping-screw carried by the opposite arm and engaging the walls of the slot for locking the latch in operative position, and a flexible lamp-supporting conductor engaging the roller.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES WILLIAM CARTER.
